How could an opinion come without judgment?

I don't care about personal favorites. I care about what the logo should
say, that it does say it, that it shows craftsmanship in execution.

Thorsten,

Thank you for offering your opinion but let's not judge or pre-judge
submissions in this manner. I have my personal favorite as I am sure many on
this list do.

#37 seems interesting , but wonder how it would look in smaller
sizes.[If it is even half as good it would be a nice logo..]

But, We are still open for submissions until at least 1st of February.
The wiki had been updated with the new date:

In my eyes only #14 and #17 are acceptable.

#14 needs a little tweaking. The elements should be a bit thicker, just
slightly more robust. There should be an imaginary circle at the center.

#17 would have to be reduced to just one shape for the 14 (and 16?)
pixel size.

Note that I don't think we should bother about 14 and 16 px sizes too
much. Having a blob of color that does not look like just any other blob
of color is already an achievement at that scale.

#37 is a good concept, but the differing treatment of the straight lines
seems odd. The thin lines mean scaling is no fun at all.

#26 and especially #25 are attractive, but not clear enough in their
relation to our realm.

All the thick brushes seem clumsy. The few splattery approaches don't
speak of planning and precision. While artistic gusto could come in as
an aspect, it can't be the dominant feature.

As far as I'm concerned we are still open for submissions until at least

I just edited the spec to actually list the Launchpad icon sizes (14,
64, 192 px, how could we miss that?).

[ubuntu-art] Artwork Team Logo Submissions

2010-12-04 Thread j_baer

Hello everyone,

I collected all of the submissions ( 41 :- ) and created a wiki page based
on the Launchpad use case.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/TeamLogoSubmissions

The objective is to view the candidates as they may appear on a web page (
desired target ).

Best regards,

John

My hope was the spec would provide enough background info for folks to
create submissions. Along the way I encouraged thinking out of the box and
IMO we have a great set of submissions to choose from.

As participation was open to all, it was easy to voice an opinion or express
a vision by submitting artwork and if the decision was not to submit that
was ok as well. :-)

With everything on the project board my expectation is folks will pick and
choose based on their interest and availability.

The topic of changing the name of the team to "Design Team" was only spoke
of briefly at the last meeting and did not receive enough discussion IMO
opinion to move it forward. I certainly like the idea but we already have a
Canonical design team and having two may become problematic.

I agree choosing the best submission to represent the team is going to be a
challenge and will take some time but placing the entire effort on hold
pending the identification of our scope would be a mistake. IMO our scope is
defined by what we are able to complete, the acceptance of our work by the
community, and is likely to change from time to time. There are too many
unknowns.

As to the topic of selection, I certainly welcome suggestions.

My first choice is to engage the Design Team. They know us best and are the
most qualified. IMO I believe folks will respect their decision as fair and
impartial.

My second choice is to assemble a panel of qualified judges from outside of
the community.

My third choice is to create a poll and let the team decide.

I would like to get this right, but if some time in the future we decide to
change it - wouldn't that be fun.

Thank you for your comments.

Best regards,

John

Re: [ubuntu-art] Artwork Team Logo - Submissions due today!

2010-12-03 Thread Blau Araujo
Hi, everyone and Vishnoo

First of all, I apologize for not participating so actively in this
discussion. Not only because my English is not good enough to develop
full arguments, but mainly because I've had a season with many shows
(I am also a musician in a blues band).

Back to the question of the logo, here in Brazil, in November, I
proposed the same issue for debate. I believe that our artwork team
(as well the other teams) do not exactly need a logo, but a generic
pictogram that is capable of representing the idea of community in
which we could insert a picture to distinguish the teams.

So far, we are inclined to abandon the logo idea (that I posted here
before), in favor of some kind of stylized speech bubble as the base
pictogram. We are still studying alternatives, but you can see how
far we come, here: http://wiki.ubuntu-br.org/BlauAraujo/Artwork (the
text is in portuguese, but you can jump to the pics, which
are self explanatory).

Now, even being a discussion of the Brazilian team, I do not discard
these ideas as a submission to this team. In a sense, a universalized
system of pictograms can be very useful since it gives a visual unity
to all community environments, despite language, that Ubuntu users have
access.

That's it! Sorry Google translator, please. :)

I'm not saying the bottom row solves the issue, but just a better way

Let's push the deadline to begin of February, earliest (expecting that
not much will happen approaching and a bit after the turn of the year).
To then evaluate the situation again.

Right, what i meant was not all, but rather the ones which i thought
could be used as logos.

And include this one as well with the brush:

The issue those icons have is they seem to symbolize an /edit/ action,
like 'draw' or 'edit' .
Checkout the launchpad's edit icon, it's very close to the brush. I dont
see how those relates to a *team's* logo.

It's like just using a '?' in a dot for a 'Support team' .

I'm not even sure if anyone would relate the icon to artwork/freedom.
But, i do like the thought process that lead to the logo. Hope it meant
more about freedom than a mechanical fan, which I dont seem to relate to
freedom.

>

Replace it? when? ;)
If we decide to change to a 'design' team, all the work folks have done
will be in vain. It wont even be used for 2-3months.
If everyone feels OK with changing a logo in just such a short period,
we should make it clearer for people that their work might be replaced.

And my concern was more about *closing* the submissions and finalizing,
rather than about accepting submissions.

I thought the survey would be about the custom website idea?

Regarding design vs artwork: That's why I asked for logo concepts that
at least hint at design, which basically led to pencils and rulers
instead of just brushes ;)

I have no doubt that logos, icons, wallpapers and themes will stay
inside the scope of the team. Questionable is if mockups and
interface/interaction design should be added. Since you can't tell such
a complicated story with a logo anyway, I see no issue with making a
choice from where we stand now.

It's not like we couldn't replace the logo again, should there ever be a
better idea.

Hi John,

Why isn't this in the submissions list? :

Any reason it was left out?
Blau Araujo mentioned it here on the mailing list on 27 Oct.

Though it's more of a modification of the Ubuntu CoF(which few folks
don't prefer), I find it the best of the existing lot.
It's easier to recognize both as 'Ubuntu' and 'artwork' related. Would
scale better and is less "busy" than the other submissions.

Regarding the closing date. Weren't we waiting on Ivanka's survey result

I was hoping someone [some guy from Germany? ;p] would bring this up!
We need to first identify what we want to be before we finalize a logo.

Just an update to this post. We received 27 high quality submissions and I
anticipate selecting the successful candidate may take a week or perhaps a
little longer. :-)

Thanks again everyone!

Body of Christ

Consider these questions:
1. Do you have the right version of the Bible or
a perversion?
2. Is your faith a belief or a practice?

3. What does the sacrifice of Jesus Christ
mean to you?

4. Do you worship God as He spake it in His
Words or as man's traditions prescribe...

5. I'd like to have a Bible Study with anyone at
any time (as long as I'm not sleepy... It'll
be a study, not a heated argument...)

may God Bless you~

2010-10-27 Thread John Baer
Everyone,

Your logo designs are great.

As there are many changes in play I would like to use the wiki to hold
our submissions for this effort. A page similar to the count down banner
page should do.

I will work on this and have it ready this weekend.

New designer's - if you will work on your idea's off line I will assist
with the submission process when the wiki page is ready. :)

Generally accepted formats are "png" & "svg".

Thanks,

John

At this stage, aiming at ready-for-release quality tends to be a waste
of time. It just needs to be good enough to evaluate the concepts.
Pencil or pen on paper can help there, because a sketch is quite obvious
a sketch. In contrast, roughed in vector-work will often just appear
unfinished.

Of course, some things are just easier to do with Inkscape :)

It would help to see just the symbols on one image. The type and symbol
layout is a secondary concern, that can be dealt with after choosing a
symbol.

The paint brush on the 3/4 symbol needs an outline to separate it from
the palette. As is, both build a single, confusing shape. Aside of that,
it's a decent concept.

Fastest way to get that outline is to duplicate the brush shape, give it
an orange stroke, place it below the first brush and adjust the stroke
width until it looks right. As a last step, if everything else has been
tweaked, you can convert the outline path to a shape and subtract it
from the palette shape.

I wonder if we can find a symbol that has more to do with the design
aspect, the planned and constructed approach.

I made some very basic concept designs, I'm afraid they're non-release
quality but I hope they'll encourage brainstorming.

Thorsten,

Thank you for the guidance. I was not aware of "foopics.com" but I uploaded
an image to test the process and I support the tool as it is very easy to
use.

My Test Image (Wallpaper):
http://www.foopics.com/show/eb075ab70e77d410493634f856206380

If anyone has an opinion why re-branding this team is a bad idea I would
really like to hear it. At the very least we need to come into alignment
with the new Ubuntu branding standards.

Otherwise, let's post some ideas to "foopics" and talk about it here.

Flat approach
=

I'd like to try a flat approach, instead.

Everyone who wants to participate can put PNG files up on
http://www.foopics.com/
and post a link to the uploaded image here (replying to this mail).

Tools
=

Start with pen or pencil on paper, don't hesitate to present rough
sketches.

Once you go to the computer, Inkscape is the preferred tool. In any
case, we will need an SVG file as final result.

Goals
=

Focus on an idea/concept for a symbol, first. Ignore type, as we will
just set "Artwork Team" using the new Ubuntu font.

Primary goal is to express that this is about artwork/creativity.
Secondary that it is related to Ubuntu and derivatives (Kubuntu,
Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Lubuntu, ...).

One way to express the relation to Ubuntu is to pick up the basic
geometry of the Circle of Friends logo. But don't just modify it, rather
play with the circle divided by three or equilateral triangle concept.

Style
=

Looking at the visual identity of Ubuntu as executed on
http://www.ubuntu.com/ we should prefer filled shapes and a 2-tone
approach (orange/white). However, we could consider another color than
orange and/or an extended palette (3 or 4 colors) for our own
sub-identity.

[ubuntu-art] Artwork Team Logo

2010-09-29 Thread j_baer

Hello Everyone,

I would like to see an updated Artwork Team logo for the Wiki that could
also serve as a badge on other sites (launchpad?).

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork

I suggest the image embrace the possibility this team will support Ubuntu
and the broader "ecosystem".

I blogged on this topic here: http://www.projblog.com/?p=1803

I suggest we start with a Wiki page to capture submissions and provide
guidance to the effort.

Thorsten, will you create a page for this purpose? We also need to put some
structure around this effort (size, file type,
colors, etc). This could become a part of the guidance displayed on the
page. Perhaps the Count Down Wiki page can serve as a template or the Ubuntu
branding guidelines can help.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Website/MaverickCountdownBanner
http://design.canonical.com/the-toolkit/ubuntu-brand-guidelines/

I know we have the talent, so don't be shy. If you are new to the list
here's a chance to make a difference!

For the moment let's not get consumed on how we will decide on the final
candidate. We can work that process on a separate thread.

UDS is 10/25-29 - it would be great to have something to show by then.

Thoughts?

John
