Re: [ubuntu-art] Bland welcome screen...
The GDM wallpaper uses same as main wallpaper of Ubuntu, but the GDM wallpaper not smooth as main wallpaper. It has a bit sharp and noise. The main wallpaper also has a problem. In the dark area (left down corner), the color has some noise and not smooth. Facts are, if you don't have a graphic card which KMS supports you are going to have a lessened graphical experience. I have one machine which looks particularly bad but after much effort I can only place the blame on the graphics card (switching it with another makes the problems go away). GDM is another matter which the design team still needs to tackle. We've concentrated our efforts in other areas until now but we will eventually get there :-) -- Ken -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Thanks for letting me know about Plymouth; I thought it is one of the first processes that get executed while booting. But I still have a black screen for ~20 secs until GDM shows up. That makes the boot experience really bad. Cheers, -- Krenar Qehaja -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Plymouth can be shown for a very short time because most boot time is spent on kernel init and plumbing, and Plymouth works only during X.org and GDM init, which take 1-2 seconds. You can have a look at bootcharts at http://people.canonical.com/~scott/daily-bootcharts/, look for plymouth (not plymouthd) there. IMO, plain login screen is a real problem for look and feel of Ubuntu, but changing it goes far beyond artwork. Karmic GDM mockups (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot/Demo/) looked great, but what we got in the end? -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Yeah I don't use the login screen, though I do wish the purple screen could change On Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 9:40 PM, Krenar Qehaja wrote: > On Thursday, June 17, 2010 04:10:06 Tony Jiang wrote: > > I don't know on other systems, but on mine it's mostly a blank black > screen > > during boot, and then it has the loading screen for a few seconds. > > That's what I get on my Dell Latitude D830 too. > > Cheers, > -- > Krenar Qehaja > > -- > ubuntu-art mailing list > ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com > https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art > -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Re: [ubuntu-art] Bland welcome screen...
I don't know on other systems, but on mine it's mostly a blank black screen during boot, and then it has the loading screen for a few seconds. I don't use the login screen. SLiM has some neat themes. However I doubt it will be used. I don't know how you could make a login screen more high tech though. All you do is click your name and type in the password :S On Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 2:35 PM, Brian L. Fraser wrote: > Now I know Ubuntu 10.04 is themed a lot better than the previous > versions. [ubuntu-art] Bland welcome screen...
Now I know Ubuntu 10.04 is themed a lot better than the previous versions. You know getting the new "Shiny" look instead of that god awful rusty looking brown... What about the welcome / login screen. Since it is the first thing you see when booting up Ubuntu, can't we make it look a little snazzier, interesting, a little more high tech? Thanks for listening to me ramble -Breezy- -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
