I like more drive-optical2. The main problem that I see with the fat one
it's the tray, I just don't like how it looks in the small sizes.
But if you all want I can try fix this (and other details).

Light and material impression are pretty good, with the exception of the
left and right edges of the front. The shading there suggests the front
is rounded back there, but the top doesn't show a matching curve.

The proportion is off; it's to high / thick.

I'd like to use the 1st drive. I like that the angle on the perspective
isn't as steep as the 2nd and Oxygen icons. Any +1's?

It also appears that the sides of the from of the drive need a little
work. Something fishy with the angle they are at.

I'll work on this icon later. I'm gonna try to improve the form making sure
that I got the symmetry right, like Thorsten said.
I'm not very happy with the small sizes, so I will redo them.

Hi,
This is my first post to the list, hope I do it right! ;)

I'd have to agree with Thorsten here, if you could use the front part from
the second version but the perspective of the first version then you'd have
a winner! The perspective of the second version would suit a hard drive icon
more than an optical drive icon.

Thank you all for your comments.
The problem that I have with the first version it's with the small sizes of
the icon (32px and below). The perspective doesn't let much space above and
below of the icon, so I can't put much details on the small ones and they
don't look very clear.
Maybe I should change the perspective on the small ones in order to get them
right.

Just a note, I'm staying out *somewhat* so as to let things creatively
develop. But, I do want to say it's perfectly acceptable for icons to
change perspective at smaller sizes. It was talked about on IRC and the
wiki will be updated to reflect this opinion. I believe the current
optical and hardrives do this.

I do want to say, that I think with the removal of the media from the
optical drive is is an improvement over the old Oxygen one. I think we
should examine whether a newly proposed icon (*any* new one not just
this drive icon) is actually *better* than what's there and we be
careful not to change for changes sake. :)

PS - If anyone wants to split off the last statement because they feel
it needs further discussion please do.

I already like it much more than the Oxygen one. Looks pretty real on
first sight, but the shadow on the sides isn't right.

The headphone port and volume wheel are superfluous. If you want to keep
them, you should line them up with the LED and eject button to be on one
height. I think the led should be green, as that's the usual color.
Orange would rather be used for burning, I'd say.
