yep, just like the wallpaper on this page does very well:

  http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/desktopedition

i think you're right in saying that a good wallpaper should take it's
colour palette (highlights included) from the windows and icons
themselves.

as it stands, there is quite a bit of dissonance between the bright
(almost 'salmon') wallpaper in Feisty and the caramel window decorations.

it's possible to produce a palette from an image. a good place to
start might be generating a palette from a screenshot of Ubuntu with
the file-manager and perhaps the applications menu open. pick the
darkest colours in the palette and work from there.

one thing that is clear is that dark wallpapers are easier on the eye
(and more energy efficient on CRT's). moreso a dark desktop puts the
windows themselves (where stuff is actually done) in the foreground.

just as wallpaper in a house shouldn't be a great work of eye-catching art,
nor should it be on the desktop. its job is to work as graphic atmosphere,
not function as a picture in itself.

cheers,

julian

I agree, you put a good point. Atleast, we should have some wallpapers
which reveals the brand Ubuntu without the text or logo of Ubuntu.
Playing Ubuntu Color specs, and some good idea/pic/illustrations. we can
have not just one wallpaper. There should be many official wallpaper
collections in Ubuntu, and Gnome Wallpaper changer should have a module
and preference to fetch the wallpaper(new archives) from the repo.

why must the Ubuntu logo be in the desktop, let alone the word "Ubuntu"?.

isn't this 'over-branding'? is the 'brand' of Ubuntu so weak it must be
pushed in the face of the user over and over again?

i'd like to see designs that back-off a little, allow the desktop to belong
to the user's imagination for a moment instead of Canonical's.

people know they're running Ubuntu when it's on their computer. we don't
need to remind them from boot to desktop.

i think it comes across as a bit desperate, an over-bearing need to be
recognised.

Re: [ubuntu-art] First idea ...

Why do people even have backgrounds?
What is a background? Something you see while you are loading the
first program after booting?

I think logos on backgrounds, even text or symbols is not
aesthetically pleasing. A background should be equally attractive in
full view or if only a snippet is peaking out through overlapping
windows it should also look good through a semi transparent window,
it should enhance the transparency look.

That's why Mac backgrounds are so great, they carry no message but
work aesthetically. The user already knows he's using Ubuntu.

Hi all!

Tanks for you comments, they were really helpful!

Here you have an updated version on my first idea with the ubuntu font:

And now a new idea that I had yesterday :

http://www.play.lu/host/test_02_001.jpg
(inspiration:
http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/Bouygues+pub/video/x13j6m_pub-bouygues-telecom-cubes_ads)

And a simple edit of the colors (my favorite):
http://www.play.lu/host/test_02_002.jpg

@Ken:

I know about the color palette and I understand that you want to stay
with these colors but you have the same colors everywhere … it's some
kind of boring (personal opinion)! A little contrast to the system
colors would make the system more "fresh-looking". I think that we have
to play with the colors to find the most exiting combination rather that
hold to the default palette! Hope you understand my point of view ... I
know it's not that easy because of my broken English ^^

You can install the font by typing 'sudo apt-get install
ttf-ubuntu-title' in a terminal
Pretty good wallpaper!

Nice pic :-)

I agree with the comment that the stars are pretty Mandriva-ish - you probably
didn't know that when making it though...too bad, really, it looks pretty
cool.

You definitely would want to use the ubuntu-title font to stay within the
branding guidelines.

I like the blue to brownish grey background, it seems simple and decent.

If you are interested in working on something which could be default for Gutsy
stick more to the brown/yellow-orange colors - the older artwork is a good
starting point. In addition, using a logo so prominently is probably not the
best idea as it draws the eye too much.
