That sounds extremely good to me! Let's give that idea a try, I think none of the Ubuntu users will regret it. The visual style I have mentioned is called 'Elements' and it has 4 variations - Fire (the one you can see in the link), Water, Air and Earth. Fire - Orange, the default visual style Water - Blue Air - Grey Earth - Green We have Human Looks now. Imagine from Intrepid, we call our theme Human Elements. Now that I think about it, you are very right that there is a troubling (yes, not just curious, but troubling) conservatism to Ubuntu art. The attitude with Ubuntu/GNOME seems to be: if we change it more than a little bit, certain segments of both new and long-time users will leave Ubuntu in droves. This is nonsense. Windows XP (Luna style was shocking for its time! And it is still garishly blue!), Windows Vista, Mac OS 10, and Mac Leopard all made very dramatic visual departures from their predecessors. Far more dramatic than Human, even. These did not result in a downturn in user base, with the possible exception of Vista (and we all know that in Vista's case it wasn't because of the look!). Lets be bold. Lets be visionary. And in the process, lets build Ubuntu's halo. The Fire/Water/Air/Earth remembers me the last Thrice album, The Alchemy Index. Anyway, I thing that this is a great idea. Instead of shipping 6 or 7 themes, we can ship 4 complete themes inspired on that elements. I agree whole-heartedly, we need more complete themes than we have. We have a lose collection of both GTK engines and window borders, with only one complete set. If I knew how to make gtk themes, i would have one sent out already. Sorry, I meant 'Each tab and window border has a narrow corresponding-theme-colored strip at the top'. If you look at the Clearlooks Classic engine included in Gutsy, you will know what I mean about the strip at the top of a tab. As soon as you select Clearlooks Classic, you will see that the dialog where you select the GTK gets a blue stripe for the tab selected. In case of Clearlooks modern, it is a strip + some gradient in that tab. The difference is that in this theme, the strip is more like a bell curve. Slightly thicker in the middle and thinning out towards the end. 1. Each tab and window border has a narrow corresponding-theme-colored stripe in the middle. I feel this gives a very good feel about that theme. For example, if I put the water theme, I feel compelled to have some sort of waterfall wallpaper for my desktop. Hi, I am only an end-user of Ubuntu and I know squat about UI / UI guidelines or even how to present what I have in mind using Gimp etc. Could never understand how to use Gimp either :) But I would like to draw attention to a visual style I have encountered for Windows. I have used this myself (love it !!!) and I believe this visual style is close to what the original hardy guidelines suggested in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/HardyDesign http://lassekongo83.deviantart.com/art/Elements-VS-82691770 If there is anyone who can take a look at the visual style above, it would be great. I didn't know if it was okay to put screenshots of a Windows OS in the /alternate link on ubuntu site. If it is, I will take permission from the author and do that. If it is okay to include those screenshots as attachments to this mailing list, I can do that too. Hi, I think nobody will blame you for using this screenshot which is, in my humble opinion, a really good example of how the black/orange theme for the next cycle should look like.
