Yes, that's quite muddy unfortunately. Very difficult to tell that the
orange blobs are the Ubuntu logo.

Fixing that might involve using a single unbroken box, and/or making
the box larger.

Another small issue is that the red of the parachute competes with the
orange of the logo.

Re: [ubuntu-art] New icon needed: Software Updater

2013-02-01 Thread Ryan Prior
I really love the idea of "unwrapping" for new releases (of either the
whole distribution or a new major release of a given app.) It's like
unwrapping a present. It doens't make much sense if you're just installing
a bugfix in glib and some updated ALSA support tho. I think the update icon
should say something about maintenance - perhaps let's look to the
iconography of the auto-repair industry, which has trained many people to
regularly tune-up their cars, just as we want to train people to apply
updates regularly.

It's quite a lot taller than wide. I wonder if that's a problem at

I like how that suggests the presence of a parachute without actually
showing it. Clever.

The style is a bit unusual. Most icons in Ubuntu are drawn as objects
with hyper-realistic shading and outlines, and no backdrop of their
own. Even Ubuntu One, which is a solid flat logo in print and on the
Web, has subtle lighting and shadows when drawn as an icon. So an icon
like yours, with flat and nearly-flat shapes and a circular backdrop,
would be a bit incongruous.

It may be true that people are more used to arrows. I have nothing
against using arrows. But that doesn't mean it's the only "known
metaphor".

For example, most often when people install software updates anywhere,
they're doing it on Windows. Windows doesn't use arrows for its
updates icon.

If anyone ever implements updates in USC, it will be one way of
installing application updates. It will not be the only way to install
any updates.

Besides that, installing updates has nothing to do with shopping. So a
Software Updater icon that looked related to shopping would have a
non-sequitur problem like the current icon.

Your proposal is extremely well drawn (nice job!), but unfortunately
it has all three problems. It still has the "A", it still has the fake
progress bar, and it looks like shopping too. :-)

Cheers

Hi folks

We have a usability problem in Software Updater (formerly known as
Update Manager).

The problem is that when the updates dialog appears by itself, there's
no visual clue that this is an official Ubuntu thing. In Ubuntu 12.10
and earlier, the icon is just a brown box with an orange arrow. And in
Raring right now, it's an "A" with a progress bar and arrows around it

So, it would help if we had a new icon, one which obviously
communicates that these are official updates for Ubuntu.

Hi Matthew,

While the idea of an airdrop/parachute is nice, as someone else also
pointed out, people are more used to the arrows and it is easier to
use that "known metaphor" for updates to make it easier for people
to recognise "updates".
Since updates are something that need to be a part of Software
centre, it is better to have a Software Updater icon that is a
derivative of the original Software centre icon rather than making
it look like a completely different/unrelated app.

Here is my take on the Software Updater. I have only done the 48px
and 128px icons. And this metaphor is scalable for all sizes, right
down to 16px. The black color for the bag is something I used to
make the bag distinguishably different from the SC icon while
maintaining the contrast for the silver arrows and the orange for
"Ubuntu".

Cheers,
Vish

Re: [ubuntu-art] New icon needed: Software Updater

2013-01-23 Thread Carlos
If you search for "update" in Google Images you get mostly variations of
spinning arrows. The parachute idea is nice, but maybe it would be
better to stick to what the user is used to and try to get something
nice using those arrows.

[ubuntu-art] New icon needed: Software Updater

2013-01-23 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

And in
Raring right now, it's an "A" with a progress bar and arrows around it
- -- again, nothing obviously to do with Ubuntu, and a bit of a non
sequitur too.

So, it would help if we had a new icon, one which obviously
communicates that these are official updates for Ubuntu.

One possibility that I've suggested is an airdrop -- a wooden box
being lowered by parachute, where either the box or the parachute (but
not both!) features the Ubuntu logo.
 Maybe you have other
ideas too.

Please post your proposals here, or DeviantArt, or Imgur, or wherever
suits you, and link to them in a reply here.

Let's get something really classy into Ubuntu 13.04.

Thanks!

[ubuntu-art] new launchpad locoteams branding needed

2013-01-09 Thread YoBoY

Hi everyone and happy new year :)

I just noticed we haven't changed the branding on the locoteams
launchpad team page (https://launchpad.net/~locoteams). It's not really
important, but I love having those icons on my launchpad page, and this
one is old ;)

What we need:
 - an icon 14x14 (<5kb)
 - a logo 64x64 (<50kb)
 - a mugshot 192x192 (<100kb)

The icons appears everywhere in small size, so no text in it. It should
reflect ubuntu or the community.

The logo appears on the launchpad team page.
The mugshot appears if you display a team members photos where this team is.

The locoteams-approved, and ubuntu-lococouncil can also have some love
with the branding. :D

So, if some of you can think of this and propose some design to fix
these icons/logos/mugshots it should be great. (jpg, png, svg are the
best formats for that)

Thank you.

Also, just to make sure, the IRC channel is: ubuntu-art correct?

Recently, Canonical's thought-leader and CEO Mark Shuttleworth posted to
the ubuntu-devel a very nice email that you should read. You can find it
here:
http://fridge.ubuntu.com/2013/01/04/going-mobile-in-2013/

You should read the whole thing, it's not long. But most directly speaking
to your interests, he wrote
"Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and *create*. Think of an app or
system feature that you think is really important to have, apply what we’ve
learned about design thinking and your own imagination to find elegant,
new, fresh ways to deliver that capability, and join us in shaping
something that can take the world by storm. Start at
developer.ubuntu.comand unleash your creativity, rigour and
expertise."

I suggest that you pick an app, think of a way that the app could be
better, and start a discussion about it. You can take a screen shot of the
app and doodle over it with your favorite paint program (Photoshop, The
GIMP, Inkscape, etc) or mock-up a whole new window.

Give us your ideas and questions, and we'll help you refine them and
present them for inclusion in the project.

Since there's so much interest in getting started with Ubuntu Artwork,
maybe we should have a meeting on IRC to introduce ourselves, some Free
Software tools for making Ubuntu Art, and ideas for getting involved.

If you'd be interested in attending an IRC meeting, feel free to post hours
you'd be available and what time zone you're in so we can coordinate.

Re: [ubuntu-art] new theme

2013-01-05 Thread Ryan Prior
Hello Thomas,

That's not off-topic at all.

The short answer is given here:
http://worldofgnome.org/how-to-theme-gnome-3/

Basically, you download the pieces of the theme you'd like (off of websites
like deviantart and gnome-look, or shared with you via ubuntu-one by
artists, or however you like) and you use a tool like gnome-tweak-tool to
tell your system to use them.

If you want to develop your own original GTK3 theme, there's an overview at
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt/Tutorials/GtkThemes

It's technical (requires typing and learning some about how themes work,
not point-and-click) but it's not difficult.

We use CSS for our themes, and there are a ton of CSS tutorials for the web
if you Google for them. However, in our case CSS isn't styling a web page,
it's styling computer program interfaces: so we have some differences
documented in the howto above.

If you want to develop your own original icon theme, there's a detailed
discussion on Ask Ubuntu:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/47643/how-do-i-make-a-theme-from-scratch-for-unity

If you have questions or want help getting started you can ask here or on
other more specific mailing lists like the gnome-themes mailing list
https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-themes-list

[ubuntu-art] New Ubuntu Wallpaper Artwork Set Idea

2012-01-14 Thread Jackson Isted
Hi All,

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on a new wallpaper set for Ubuntu and
maybe other OS's. I would name the set Night Lights.

The photos I would like to include are located here (and more may be added
later
on):https://picasaweb.google.com/hawks008/NightLights?authuser=0&feat=directlink.

If you have any thought feel free to direct reply or group reply.

Thanks,

These icons were commissioned by Canonical indeed, but they are over a
year old and they're not being developed.

By the way, elementary icons, upon which Humanity icon set is based,
will see a new release soon:

A rumor is new icons are being discussed by the design team and will be

This site http://www.yellowicon.com/ shows it is under contract (?) by

Welcome Joel,

It's great to have you here. Are you mainly in the area of design and
production (html/php) or can you do drawing art as well?

What kinds of things would you like to help with? Do you know any
python? PLaces like the loco directory need more design help and general
help, there are also lots of small pieces that could do with some
art/design attention.

Thank you for your contribution.

I think we should avoid text and logos on wallpapers (except if woven
into the fabric of the wallpaper in a subtle way, perhaps).

It was on oversight on my part to not mention that in the spec. So now I
added:
 * No logo and no text. Such elements attract too much attention.
Constantly reminding the user of the name of the distribution does not
communicate confidence.

Jakub: I would like to see a version (or versions) of your wallpaper
without the logo/text and with glowing schematics. Also a rotation such
that no lines are horizontal or vertical could be interesting. Remember,
the wallpaper should speak of performance and lightness.

Jakub,

Very nice and thank you posting this submission early. :-)

I am making an assumption some folks will install Xubuntu on smaller laptops
or perhaps netbooks.

My question is how well does this design scale to a "1024 x 576" 16:9 aspect
ratio.

Will you investigate and report back?

Best regards,

I'm starting this a new thread ( compiz/unity) as we really have two topics
here. The stated desire is the Artwork Team creates a new logo for Unity as
a proposal for the Design Team.

Thoughts?

How does Flickr display JPG better than PNG? JPG is a terrible format

[ubuntu-art] New Artwork Team Wiki

2010-11-03 Thread John Baer
Hello Everyone,

It is my pleasure to introduce the updated new look of the Artwork Team Wiki
( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork ). The design supports the changes
outlined in the blueprint and may be considered a work in progress. Please
set your user preferences to the new "light" Wiki theme for the best user
experience.

One important process I will draw attention to is the change to being task
focused, not release focused. A task such as “create new default wallpaper”
may be directed to a specific release; the task design a new “Artwork Team
Logo” is release independent. This change will allow us to accept a greater
variety of assignments.

As discussed at UDS this solution is temporary as the desire is to create a
new robust solution based on ccHost, Django, or Ruby on Rails. Although not
perfect, the current mix of mailing list, Ubuntu Wiki, and Flickr is mature
and tested. When considering broad changes I like to “start with the simple,
move to the complex”. This is the simple solution. :)

So how does the Process work?

Step 1 – Make a request or proposal.

I anticipate requests and proposals will come in from a variety of sources
in the community. In fact they already are!

Step 2 – Create a “Spec”.

The purpose of the spec is to explain what needs to be done, how to do it,
and when it needs to be complete. The goal of the spec is to provide a
mechanism to inform folks about a request or proposal they may have an
interest in contributing to.

Step 3 – Create Submissions

With a Spec in place folks may create submissions or work on other tasks.
Submissions may be discussed on the mailing list and for effort which
utilizes Flickr, comments may be appended to submissions. When there is a
desire, additional discussions may occur on the IRC. Please remember in the
case of art it sometimes becomes a matter of preference. Be respectful and
use the Ubuntu Code of Conduct in our discussions. It is anticipated the
submission process will be iterative and dynamic.

Step 4 – Evaluate and Approve

The final step is the approval and selection of the desired result. In some
cases this may also include the evaluation of different design concepts to
determine the best solution (viz. Ubuntu countdown banner). In addition, my
hope is many will choose to post their appreciation as an accolade.

What if it doesn’t fit?

All of the above may be too formal for some requests (viz. can you give me
some ideas on how to improve this web page). In those cases the mailing
list may be adequate, in others cases we may have to discover the best
approach.

The Beta

The first task (our beta) is to create the new Artwork Team logo. I created
a submission to seed the effort, serve as a process example, and to
encourage others. This is a real task and the result will be prominently
displayed in the community and worthy of inclusion into your portfolio.

The Walk-thru - Artwork Team Logo

* If you do not have an account on Flickr, create one. The free account is
adequate for this task.

* Create your images in a tool capable of supporting the “SVG” image format
(viz. Inkscape). I used 128px as the height. Export your submission as a
“png” or “jpg”. I discovered Flickr displays icons uploaded as “jpg” better
than “png”. I use GIMP to do the conversion.

* Upload your images to your Flickr photo stream. Be sure to tag the image
with “UbuntuArtworkTeamLogo”, attribute as “creative commons”, and add
comments of your choosing.

* Join the “Ubuntu Artwork Team Logo Designs” group and add your image(s).
http://www.flickr.com/groups/uawt-1/

* Optionally, attach your source files (svg) to the spec. Be sure to
identify your attachment in a manner which links it to your submission.

* Inform the group using the mailing list.

I moved the desired due date out to 12/01 to give everyone time to
participate. If you have problems just let me know ( j.b...@ubuntu.com ).

Thanks!

As the release is only 11 days away I would like to handle the final
disposition of this as a backlog item to be resolved during the 10.10
development cycle.

http://old.nabble.com/file/p28279426/community-themes.png

As the current Website link on the Software Center installation form points
to the current wiki page my suggestion is create a new page in
"Artwork/Documentation" title CommunityThemesGuidelines.

Move the content of the current CommunityThemes page to
CommunityThemesGuidelines.

When this is complete update CommunityThemes with the public facing content.

This will resolve the current issue and provide adequate time to plan for
the best long term solution.

Being the only audience-facing page, it does not fit into any of the
existing top levels.

If this page remains the only one of it's kind, it could be
/Artwork/CommunityThemes
But perhaps with a release version attached?

If there is a realistic chance of similar pages being added, it should
be /Artwork/Packages/CommunityThemes or
perhaps /Artwork/Packages/10-04/CommunityThemes

Hello everyone,

I've completed my vision of the public facing Community Themes wiki page and
would like to replace the content of the current page with the new content.

My desire in creating this page was to align with the new Ubuntu branding to
the greatest extent possible and to showcase the themes without preference.

My goal is Ubuntu users who desire to install this package will view this
page to make an informed decision.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JohnBaer/SandBox

I anticipate a new Community Themes page will be created to capture the
essence of the current page.

Thorsten, I need your advice on where this page should be located.

I guess it's time to start targeting 10.10 rather than 10.04.

Wallpaper submissions via Flickr, themes for the community-themes
packages and countdown banners are the clear options for contributing.

If anything else is needed, it usually comes with requirements making it
a job for the designers at Canonical and only in rare cases for trusted
community members of proven skill.

So you might want to consider working for a derivative or a specific
piece of software, as you may find more need, freedom and reward there.

Mainly we use open source tools like Inkscape and Gimp. Naturally, you can use
whatever tools you wish but not using an open format to save them in limits

True, if you get to that page via Software Center or other direct link.

I'd like to see some level of separation between this audience-facing
page and the rest of our wiki pages that are all targeted at
designers/contributors.

If the link can be changed, it should be
Artwork/Packages/CommunityThemes or something along those lines.

I think it is not OK for anything living under
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork to get rid of the navigation header
(except _maybe_ for pages below a central project page, with their own
navigation header).

If you really want to match the new look, you should fill the shape and
not use outlines. the fish tails are not convincing and the eyes are a
bit large.

The wide tracking on "Themes" is brutal and entirely unnecessary.

Comments seem out of place on such an overview.

Perhaps there should be separate links to wiki page and Launchpad (or
other download) per theme.

We really should have infrastructure that generates pages like that.

[ubuntu-art] New Communty Themes Wiki Page

2010-04-10 Thread j_baer

As promised I started to to update the Community Themes wiki page. The
current content is just to see how the page flows.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JohnBaer/SandBox

I must warn you it is different as IMO the audience has changed and the
requirements.

New audience - I was pleasantly surprised to see this page linked to the
installation of the "community-themes" package using the Software Center.
IMO this is spot on! My vision of the page is informative to the user who is
interested in installing the package (viz. new requirement).

At the end of the page I envision a short walk through of the installation
process targeted toward the new user.

Issues:

- What is the desired image sized of the screen shot? IMO one is enough.

- Is the general format Ok? I removed the Artwork banner as it did not seem
to fit.

- The "logo" is my attempt to blend with the new Ubuntu look (e.g. "fish")
assuming the appearance of the wiki will not change. Other ideas are
welcomed.

If this designed is agreed, I hope the respective authors will supply screen
shots and text. Otherwise I will do the best I can. : )

My desire is to have this complete and ready by the release candidate.

I feel the theme is like anything else in a development release. First put out
there for people to point out what works and what doesn't work so that it can

I get the feeling that I will get planed here but the way I see it is that the
design theme hasn't asked for input as they did for 9.10 boot. This would
suggest to me that they have a plan that they are happy with, commenting or
