Yes, that's quite muddy unfortunately. Very difficult to tell that the
orange blobs are the Ubuntu logo.

Fixing that might involve using a single unbroken box, and/or making
the box larger.

Another small issue is that the red of the parachute competes with the
orange of the logo.

I like how that suggests the presence of a parachute without actually
showing it. Clever.

The style is a bit unusual. Most icons in Ubuntu are drawn as objects
with hyper-realistic shading and outlines, and no backdrop of their
own. Even Ubuntu One, which is a solid flat logo in print and on the
Web, has subtle lighting and shadows when drawn as an icon. So an icon
like yours, with flat and nearly-flat shapes and a circular backdrop,
would be a bit incongruous.

 for people to recognise updates.

It may be true that people are more used to arrows. I have nothing
against using arrows. But that doesn't mean it's the only known
metaphor.

For example, most often when people install software updates anywhere,
they're doing it on Windows. Windows doesn't use arrows for its
updates icon.

Since updates are something that need to be a part of Software
centre, it is better to have a Software Updater icon that is a
derivative of the original Software centre icon rather than making
it look like a completely different/unrelated app.

If anyone ever implements updates in USC, it will be one way of
installing application updates. It will not be the only way to install
any updates. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdates#approaches

Besides that, installing updates has nothing to do with shopping. So a
Software Updater icon that looked related to shopping would have a
non-sequitur problem like the current icon.

Your proposal is extremely well drawn (nice job!), but unfortunately
it has all three problems. It still has the A, it still has the fake
progress bar, and it looks like shopping too. :-)

Cheers

Here is my take on the Software Updater. I have only done the 48px
and 128px icons. And this metaphor is scalable for all sizes, right
down to 16px. The black color for the bag is something I used to
make the bag distinguishably different from the SC icon while
maintaining the contrast for the silver arrows and the orange for
"Ubuntu".

Cheers,

If you search for update in Google Images you get mostly variations of
spinning arrows. The parachute idea is nice, but maybe it would be
better to stick to what the user is used to and try to get something
