i'm fat to be a specialist of gtk artwork.
But, IMHO, there is curently no clean way to use the same image for an
horizontal a vertical panel.
the only solution i can find is to have a (big) .png for vertical panel,
and a smaller one for horizontal, but that's not a beautiful solution...

the other matter is to automaticly associate the background to the
themes (as desktop background can, i think).

if somebody know well gtk, or known a great how-to...

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks interesting, to say the least,
but I wonder about usability here. The bar looks like it's too dark
to create a proper contrast between itself and the text.

I think the panel needs to look quite different from our window borders
and dialog backgrounds. At the moment, part of the problem is that the
panel looks too similar to the menu bar, of an app, and to the inactive
window borders.

There is (also) an aesthetic problem with several applets and gadgets that can
be added to the panel which ignore the panel background. Some of them look
great until you hover over them, at that moment
they start looking like a push button which drops the whole facade of a nice
and visually unique panel. It seems that those applets were created with the
panel being a widget container, like regular
applications. I think the clock which is added by default does this.

Regarding the topic: I'm sorry, but I did not know the current look of the
panel was officially labelled a problem, is there a bug or usability report I
missed on this topic so that I can investigate
possible solutions?

Sincerely,

Frank

Those are bugs, which we could fix if we decided to make this rock for

Wahou !

That's just nice ! Would be nice if GtkHuman use such light grey
(without the glassiness). This tile fit well in both top and bottom
panel.

Nice work !
