broadband with linux mirror

2008-06-30 Thread Sebastian
Hi all,

I recently moved and now I have to look into a new broadband connection.
Until now I was with AAPT but I consider a new carrier.

Which ISPs can you recommend in the Sydney area who have a not counted
Linux mirror for updates?
I know of iinet and internode but are there more or even better one?

I thought as well about naked DSL as we do not many local calls, if
only to calling card services for over seas.
By now I have a alder netgear router, am I correct that I can't use
this one for ADSL +2 or even VoIP?

Cheers,
Sebastian

better than internode? Anyone who tells you there is such a thing is
lying ;)

It depends on the model. I personally like Billion kit. Internode can
sell you a preconfigured Billion it does everything modem+router, with
an extended warranty or you can buy one more cheaply and configure it
yourself - use staticice.com.au for pricing info once you have picked a
model.

 Hi Sebastian,

Internode I would say it the best ISP to go with.

TPG adsl2+ isn't too bad either except that they do not provide any apt
mirror. It would be great if pipenetworks (the backbone) actually made the
data free of cost for participating ISPs (who I presume pay fees to them).

I am not sure if TPG is working towards providing an apt mirror. Speedwise
(down+up), TPG adsl2+ is not too shabby.

cheers

Do I have to pay phone line rental to telstra when I sign up for phone
 and net with internode?

You would need a form of line rental. One of the great things about cable
broadband is that you don't need line rental :)

What phone company are you with?

And what about DSL and DSL +2 can I use the same router? or does it
need to be DSL +2 capable?

You could use a DSL router for +2 internet, but i think the net will be
faster if u use a +2 capable router.

Bigpond runs their bigpond file service (files.bigpond.com) where you

Personally, if you are after value for money in terms of download quotas,
steer clear from bigpond, but if you like fast downloads and you're in a
  cable area, it's pretty good.

I use iiNet for myself and some of my clients, as well as Internode.
Both are of equal quality IMHO.

What sets them both apart from Telstra/Optus is the fact that you can
call up tech support and get an English-speaking human being within

Telstra and Optus on the other hand offshore their support, and blindly

iiNet and Internode have been my recommendation to all of my clients for
the last 5 years now, and if they keep up their quality service, will
  stay that way.

Oh, and both have regularly refreshed Ubuntu mirrors. :)

Hi Matthew,

currently I am with AAPT phone and net bundled.

I realised that as soon as I think about VoIP I will have to get a
new/different router. Else I am quite satisfied with my current DSL
speeds.

Hey,

In addition to the posts here, it may be worth some time looking
through the whirlpool forums. Most of the Australian ISPs have reps
that post there. For your question in particular try the 'Choosing an
ISP'[1] section.

Here I use iiNet and and more than happy with the service - both the
actual 'net and the customer service. They have their 'iiNet Free
Zone' which has mirrors for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, *BSD, Gentoo,
Madriva, even cygwin. Have a look at the actual mirror site[2] or
Freezone list[3] to see if what you want/need is covered. Anything
downloaded from the freezone is shown on the usage graph but not
counted towards the quota.
Other non-quota mirrors include some radio stations, GamersHell
(game patches, demos, previews etc), some game servers.

I was previously with OptusNet Cable when living with my parents:
the noticable (so far) mirror that Optus has that iiNet doesn't is
Sourceforge.

cheers,
Owen.
