Followed your advice and added the appropriate entry for VLC (which is "VLC
media player") but the app is still starting up maximised with Maximus. Any
other advice?

Re: Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Maximus

2009-04-01 Thread Chris Debenham
It's not easy, but you can set this up in gconf-editor.
Run 'gconf-editor /apps/maximus' and change the value of
'exclude_class' to include the window class of whatever you want to
ignore.
To find out the class run 'xwininfo' and then click on the window in
question - it will return with a line (among others) such as:
xwininfo: Window id: 0x445 "VLC media player"

In this case 'VLC media player' is probably the class you want

Ubuntu Netbook Remix and Maximus

2009-04-01 Thread Simon Ives
Hi all.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a settings file (for e.g.) that will tell
Maximus (part of the Ubuntu Netbook remix package) not to maximise certain
applications? Some applications, such as VLC, don't play too well with Maximus
and altering a particular setting or adding entries into a central database
would be much easier than adjusting the application's window every time it's
loaded.

Thanks.

Check that the BIOS setting is AHCI on the SATA drives. It sounds like
it's in ATA emulation mode.

The only things i know of that require the alt CD are setting up disks
for encryption, LVM, RAID, or a combination thereof.

installing 8.04 on sata drives prob

2009-04-01 Thread James Takac
Hi Guys

I'm having probs installing ubuntu (32 bit) on a friends pc. Have loaned one
of mine till I sort this out. Both live and alternate cds pass the integrity
check yet both throw up read errors during the install phase. Both HDD and
DVD drive are sata and bios shows them both on the same ide interface (#3)
with the HDD as master and the DVD as slave. The processor is a 2.4g P4
celeron. Do I need to set specific parameters for the sata drives in BIOS
maybe? The mobo is an ASUS PSGC-MX if that also helps. I'm not having much
luck via google but suspect the prob to be related to both drives being sata
and/or settings for the drives. Any ideas I can try?

What modem/router are you trying to configure?

That particular USB modem *does* work under Ubuntu, but it needs some tweaking.
The issue is that the modem also contains a MicroSD slot which allows it to
act as both a modem *and* a USB storage device. The problem with getting it to
run under Ubuntu is that Ubuntu recognises it as a mass storage device so won't
connect to it as a modem.

You'll have to setup the correct kernel module for the USB device numbers
(vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0031 - not vendor=0x19d2 product=0x2000 which is the
number for the USB storage). You'll also have to switch the USB mode (from
2000 to 0031 as above), possibly using USB Mode Switch
(http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/). I played around with one of
these for a few days but ended up going with the wireless router/modem (home
network gateway 7.1) for ease of use. The USB worked but I had to create a
shell script to mode switch every time the device was plugged in and this was
something that my wife and daughter were unhappy with. If your friend doesn't
require the USB modem then I'd suggest switching to the wireless modem/router.
