Hey Andrew, are plane tickets included? (just kidding!) I hope that your
event goes well, there has not been any interest here in South Tas so
maybe next time!

Re: Estimated time of official release for Australia

2009-10-28 Thread In the scrub
My Goodness Scott that was quick !
Many thanks

As soon as I have burned and tested the various flavours
Intend to whack up on a torrent to take the load off the mirrors and
servers
by seeding via Mininova

I must say extraordinary interest in this release
Much more so than observed in previous ones .

Cheers
Phil

Re: Ubuntu-Au Forum

2009-10-28 Thread In the scrub
Well Done and thanks Bronze

What we have observed over here is that most Noobs
just find it a pain and too much hassle to
use some of the canonicle interfaces being very new

Thus imo the Ubuntu and linux community in general chase off in
part
a valuable resource /user pool .

Many are so used to gmail and groups
some ISP have ditched usenet News groups altogther
and thus manystay with this type of forum .

Additionally I must say the silence was deafening from
Oz ubuntu source forge area when attempting to join

Here was able to join the Gmail group far more easily
(this is no crticism of the hard working busy members from the oz
source forge clan)

Thus your Idea gets my vote and a Few Dollars if you need them
and could almost guarantee over 20 folks day one

Re fragmenting the communities I dont think so
IMO the noobs would grow into the better and traditional communities
via what you propose and through here in an Australian way .

Take West oz Tas and NTACT representation -- I do not see
much on the source forge area from them .
As one new Ubuntu user well over 18 months now since I gave him a disc
and set him up remarked this morning

Some of the Ubuntu folks just talk a bit too geeky for me and no
locals.
Another indicator is how many whirlpool folks after a bit of whim
contact after ahelpful post
or offer to send solution script disk via whim or private email
would enjoy and use what you propose (IMO)

Thus like chicken soup -it cant hurt .
I add my how can I help offer to your plan

That way Linux and Ubuntu in particular benefits as have many remote
and city folks because an individual got of thier tail and just went
for it .

Few Tech heads in Geradton and Perth want to kick on Ubuntu a bit
over here by reapiring old junked boxes and giving to the oldies and
those that cant afford or been exposed to 'puters much before . This
has now created interest at senior Govt Level and agree its a good

Oldies who have hardly touched a machine before are using Ubuntu
without any problems

So how do we rekindle Ubuntu activity in West oz ?

Re: webcam drivers for ubuntu 9.04

2009-10-28 Thread Timmy
Here is a Video Tutorial for you on how to get WebCam working in
Ubuntu 9.04

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WajZ_pCh7Ag

Please be aware that some Webcams do not work, but Logitech cam's
almost always DO work! ;-)

So I hope you have a Logitech... or a few different cams to try out...

Just plug it in, get the msn client from that video i liked above and
it will work out of the box
you do not download and install drivers in linux like you do in
windows
if linux does not have the driver it will ask to download it otherwise
it just won't work unless ur a ultra nerd who can rebuild the os to
include it... never needed these days its all plug and play

It really depends on the chipset that the camera is using, also some of
the older cams need some tweaking to get them working. What model
camera is it?
