[OT] emails from Peter Williams

2010-02-19 Thread Dave Hall
Hi all,

I am not sure how many of you have received emails from Peter Williams
(aka pew) in the last couple of days, but I have received 2, 1 via
facebook and the other from Picasa.

I really don't appreciate list users using my email address for mass
invites for online services. Not only do I think it is poor etiquette,
it is really annoying.

Peter if you are still on this list, please stop sending me messages
asking that I look at pictures of your cat, I'm really not interested.

Cheers

Dave

Applications software

2010-02-19 Thread Hamish
I am recommending that a client move his business onto a linux
(ubuntu) platform.
I need to find business applications that run on Linux.
Can someone suggest where I can find suppliers of such apps as:
G/L, Inv, POS, Drs, Crs etc

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hamish

I'd strongly recommend avoiding emails such as this in the future.
Please contact mailing list admins instead.

In this case, the admin is me. Dave, please contact me off-list to
discuss this situation.

I am an accountant and have looked in vain for a decent accounting program that
runs on linux (I have downloaded and checked about 20 of them). GnuCash is a
close as you will get, unless you want to use CRM software.
If setting up some sort of CRM client/server system is not going to be too big
a project for your client, I would recommend going straight to OpenERP or
similar, and not bothering with standalone accounting apps.

Hi Brett, Norm, (and Hamish if you're on this list), and everyone else.

Brett..thank you for your follow up email.
There is also a good list here:
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_accounting_software

I would list to follow-up on a couple of things.

I have used GNUCash in the past, and even compiled it up myself on one
occasion. The current version uses 'SQLite' as it's backed. (Think of
the MSAccess JET Engine but implemented properly.) It wouldn't be
impossible to create another front end to GNUCash which made data
entry a lot easier far a particular environment (eg. POS).

The topic of Accounting Software for Linux was raised at the recent
Linux.Conf.Au conference in Wellington New Zealand. It is certainly an
area that could do with some attention.

Jethro Carr of Amberdms (http://www.amberdms.com) was pulling together
interested parties interested in FOSS solutions to accounting
software.

Regards,
Paul

Installing X-CD-Roast

2010-02-19 Thread David Bowskill
Hello all.

I have downloaded and installed X-CD-Roast from the Ubuntu software
Center. On clicking the icon, I get the following message in a small window:

No root configuration file found or not readable!

The Superuser must start and configure X-CD-Roast first before other
users can use it

So I activated a terminal:

da...@djb-p4:/usr/bin$ ls -l ./xcdroast

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 702152 2009-04-08 08:18 ./xcdroast

Then:

da...@djb-p4:/usr/bin$ ./xcdroast

And got the same message as above.

Then tried the following:-

da...@djb-p4:/usr/bin$ sudo ./xcdroast

[sudo] password for david:

Then got the message below:-

** (xcdroast:6300): WARNING **: Failed to access cdrecord. Please check
the permissions and ownership of /usr/bin/cdrecord

Checking /usr/bin/cdrecord:-

da...@djb-p4:/usr/bin$ ls -l /usr/bin/cdrecord
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 2009-11-06 18:39 /usr/bin/cdrecord - wodim

Then checking wodim:

da...@djb-p4:/usr/bin$ ls -l ./wodim
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 395784 2009-10-03 08:14 ./wodim

I cannot get past this point and cannot see what is wrong with the
permissions or ownership.

Can anybody help?

Thanks

David Bowskill
