Hello, thanks for your reply The network manager is checked in and seems to work. I have installed exactly the same version of Ubuntu on my partners computer and on my laptop and desktop. Both my partners computer and my laptop show an 'up/down arrow icon in the toolbar which can be used to connect/disconnect etc but is not present on the desktop. It is this icon that I wish to regain. Thanks David
