2012-01-05 Thread Anthony J. Brow

Hi there,

This event has been well publicised, but what about the people from
outside Brisbane. HOW do we get there, is there parking ?? Or is the
train/bus recommended ?? If so, how far is the venue from stations/busstops.

Sorry this a bit of a late minute question, but the answers may help
more folks get there.

The fact that you can run the server or central storage off your own pc
at home, instead of having it uploaded to a third party storage provider
on the internet somewhere.
There's no terms & conditions to accept if you setup your own cloud
server on your pc.
If you want to know why that's important, Google "dropbox privacy
issues". And you'll see why some people are thinking twice about paid
third party storage.
Any because you can run it off your own computer at home, the storage is
free and only limited by your hard drive space.
Also you can ask Head_victim on IRC, he is quite passionate about this
subject.

Finally! A cloud storage server that is multi platform and free

2011-11-09 Thread Anthony
I'm not sure if this has been looked at before. But this is too cool
not to share.
I found this in the latest copy of "Linux Magazine" doing a piece on
cloud computing.
http://www.tonido.com/

  * It has options to install as a server on Windows, Mac and Linux.
  * This also gives you client software for Iphone, Android, Blackberry
and Windows phone.
  * Apparently you can sync files, calendars & tasks, share photo's,
blogs and collaborate with others all from your own server.
  * You can also buy a plug-in Tonido server for $119, which runs on 1.2
watts so leaving it switched on isn't going to chew up the electrons.
  * If you still want off-site storage that's out of your control,
there's 2Gb free or 50Gb for $29.95 / year!

I know a certain Ubuntu aficionado who will find this particularly
interesting.

Re: More warning for release parties?

2011-10-18 Thread Anthony
Fair point, however I now think the issue is that the Brisbane release
party was only/published on the calendar/ 2 days before the actual event.
This is what I'm getting at. These things should be planned and
published on the calendar 1 week before they're held to allow the most
people to respond and attend.

More warning for release parties?

2011-10-18 Thread Anthony
Just noticed there was a 2 day warning for the last release party.
Could this be re-adjusted to a week?
Some of us have days planned ahead by work and family pretty far in advance
And have to travel further to get to the parties.

Thanks

Re: Brisbane release party - Oneiric Ocelot

2011-09-07 Thread Anthony
Hey everyone,

I've hit up Zaraffas Cafe in Toowoomba about holding local Ubuntu meet
ups and they were quite happy
to supply additional power points and free wifi to have a group of
people buying coffee and cake on a sunday arvo,
as they are usually pretty quiet at that point in the week.

I was just thinking perhaps the other cafes in Brisbane might be just as
receptive to holding the install party?

Anyone's thoughts?

Re: Sound in Skype

2011-08-26 Thread Anthony Brow
Hi Folks,

Recently, although working ok for quite a while, the incoming sound in
Skype is not working. My version of Skype is 2.2.0.25. When checking
about this problem on the net, many people are stuck with this problem.
I have done all sorts of checks and also successfully played CDs. Also
the sound settings are ok. The Skype 'sound test' is good, but the test
call just does not work (at least the lady's voice cannot be heard)

People online in Skype can hear me ok. I get the impression that the
problem is with Skype. And seeing Skype is now owned by Microsoft, who
would one contact there ?

The suggestion has been made to use an older version of Skype, but I am
not sure that this is still available for Ubuntu 11.04. And Skype
2.2.0.25 is still shown as a "Beta System" and has been for months.

Well, I really would appreciate any assistance with this bug/problem.

thanks and regards

Stumbleupon for Firefox

2011-08-25 Thread Anthony
I want to share with you all my secret addiction to this Firefox Add-on.
Stumbleupon is awesome if you're bored and need to kill some time
looking at things on the web that interest you.

Basically you pick topics that only interest you and Stumbleupon brings
you pages on those topics voted by people all over the
world to be the most interesting.

Here's a brief intro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D_a-h4XFMo

How does this apply to Ubuntu you say? If you add from the hundreds of
topics the "Open Source" and "Linux/Unix" topic groups,
you can discover lots of new and different projects currently being used
or in development that may work with Ubuntu.

Easiest way to install it is to start Firefox, goto "Tools" -> "Add-ons"
and in the search bar at the top right type in "Stumbleupon", click
"install"
and restart Firefox.

Making a new account only needs an email address and a nickname and your
set.

Have fun!

Re: ubuntu-au Digest, Vol 65, Issue 11

2011-07-19 Thread Anthony
Hi David,

If the computer is a laptop, sometimes there is a small switch on the
side you have to flick on for the wireless to power up,

Otherwise it might be a key combo you have to hit like Fn + F4 or
something to power up the wireless (look for the wireless symbol on the
"F" keys at the top)

If it is the wired connection that's not working goto terminal and type
in "lspci | grep Ethernet" and look for the model number of the network card

This will correlate to a module that has to be manually loaded that
Ubuntu forgot to load for your network card..

For example it might be you need rt8139.ko for your model you'd then
type into terminal "modprobe rt8139" and if this worked and is the
correct driver your network device would kick in
if you have it connected to a wired modem connection you'd see it connect.

When you do find that driver that makes it work you need to make it
start every time the computer starts so type in "sudo nano /etc/modules"
and you'd add the driver to the bottom "rt8139" (without the commas of
course).

If you're still stuck copy and paste the output of "lspci | grep
Ethernet" to this mail list and we'll sus out your driver for you ;)

Good luck!

Octatron

ssh black arts, chook-fu

2011-07-10 Thread Anthony
A conversation between Octatron and Gorilla on the 11th of July about
the details of ssh farming

Octatron> Has anyone here mastered the black art of ssh tunnelling?

Kind of... But waiting on approval on requisition for more
chickens to sacrifice on the next full moon.

gorilla: Cool well I have chickens wanting to run through
chookhouse 5900 running ssh to another chookhouse at 5900 what gates
(ports) need to be opened? 22 + 5900? and do the farmers have to
exchange just their public keys or that and their private keys both ways?

Basically you are creating a chook run as hutch 5900 at you
local chookhouse. Any chook entering that hutch will be transported via
hutch 22 to the remote chook house and then to 5900 on the desintation
chookhouse

the following should get you close: ssh -L
5900:localhost.localfarm:5900 remote.chookhouse.farm

regarding the exchanging keys to the chookhouses, the same
rules apply as straight ssh.

gorilla: Thank you I'll give that a burn however when I do
that and it asks for a password, is it for the ssh password or root
password and for which chookhouse?

it should be the ssh password for the remote chookhouse. Ahh.
if you are trying to connect as root or r...@remote.chookhouse.farm then
you need to ensure that you are allowing root to loginwith password or
exchange the appropriate public keys.

gorilla: Do the public keys on both farms have to be placed
in each chookhouse ~/? or the private keys as well? or is it one way

just the public keys. Get standard ssh from one chookhouse to
the other working first and then move to tunneling 5900.

Gorilla: ok so is it a case of handing the keys over manually
to a certain folder from a certain folder? or do I simply run a
command? Also, do I need to cut the keys first by running a command to
create them then transfer, or do they already exist and I simply move
them? Thanks for this btw

Octatron: yes, just copy the relevant key over. best to cut
and paste the relevant line from .ssh/id_[rd]sa.pub (I'm going from
memory here)

gorilla: kewl, so for each farm I might have say
.ssh/id_farm1.pub then id_farm2.pub etc and this would need to put into
the machine I wish to pipe too from the one wishing to connect

Octatron: yes, or you can use the same .pub file for all
machines. It simplifies admin but if the same key is compromised that
all the farms becomes accessible.
* gorilla wonders if we should post the transcipt of this irc conversation.

I was just thinking the same thing, I think we should :P

I suppose the only other thing than is to setup putty on all
non-linux (Windoze) pc's and move it's repective windoze_putty.pub key
across to the Linux.farm.box and watch those chooks fly!

Octatron: Windows... off with their heads!

gorilla: no no.. off with their cash!
* gorilla prefers his chooks to be headless. No need for a GUI.

Thank-you I've got it working now.. I didn't put the username
in on username@remote_chookhouse.farm when piping the hutches! so it was
attempting to connect to the root chookhouse silly me!

I tried setting up a VPN but found out too late you need
server 2008 for windoze users to connect more than one user and it was
super touchy and slowed the network down majorly.. businesses need a way
to securely access files remotely from the roadside or elsewhere

 Ahh.. Yeah. no rooster connections.

Yeah I don't like to root with cockpit connections unless
it's needed :P

gorilla: all cockfighting aside, is their a command I can run
to check the chookhouse 5900 is really running through hutch 22?

*thinks someone should make drag and drop gui for setting up
ports and pipes with chookhouses down each side*

Octatron: It will show up in netstat on the local machine.

* head_victim lets a bunch of chickens loose in the channel

Seems netstat doesn't show me port 22 being used? do I have
to indeed pipe it to grep ssh?

I mean netstat doesn't show me the hutch 22 being used are
the chooks running though another hutch somewhere or did the fox get them?

hey head_victim welcome to the farmers market :P

Re Glabels Business Cards

2010-08-02 Thread Anthony J. Brow
Hi Folks,

When attempting to make 'bizcards' with 'GLabels', I ran into trouble
when printing the cards. I picked a 90mm x 50mm size card in GLabels
2.2.8, run in Lucid Lynx. The result after printing, was a card size of
86mm x 46mm. I tried different card brands and sizes and no matter what
I did, the cards were not the correct size after printing.
Oh yes I managed to get the correct size but I had to use a 'mailing
label' of 96mm x 56mm and trim that down to 94mm x 54mm before printing.
Only then did I get the correct size. So I ask you : is there a bug in
this program ? Can this be rectified ? GLabels 2.3.0 is still in the
development stage, so it cannot be used.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so, can this be rectified ?

many thanks
Tony

re: transfer of Gramps in Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx

2010-05-19 Thread Anthony Joshua Brow
Ladies/Gents,

Before clean install to Lucid Lynx on my PC, I recorded Gramps to CD
with a view to putting it on Lucid Lynx. When I put the Cd in, the file
comes under 'personal data' with the date the CD was recorded. The CD
shows the name of "Gramps-desktop".

Now, when I try the transfer to Lucid, the system tells me:

"The application launcher "gramps.desktop" has not been marked as
trusted. If you do not know the source of this file, launching it may be
unsafe".

Now Gramps was ok in Ubuntu 8.04, so I figure that the CD is 'safe'. As
I feel I am still a nooby, I really would appreciate some guidance in
this. Oh Yea, the Gramps in 8.04 was Gramps 2.2.1 and in Lucid is
updated to Gramps 3.2.3-1.

Omniwoof, thank you for the tip on Geni.com. Yes I have tried that, It
may run well in Microsoft, but is useless

This can be done with Gramps as well. But surely, there must be other

Please let me know how it runs for you and if you have any problems.

re: Gramps 3.0.4-1 Genealogy

2009-01-03 Thread Anthony J. Brow
Hi Folks,

Do any of you on this list have experience with Gramps. I agree with
remark that this program is quite "labour intensive".

When putting in names and later wanting to edit/add a 'spouse' to the
name, I find that the 'spouse' item is grayed out
in the edit colum. The same goes for 'siblings' and 'children'.
Is there a remedy for this ? I have not found this in the manual.

I have tried more than a dozen of 'Windoze' genealogy programs through
'Wine' and 'Crossover', in Hardy Heron, but I find this slow and
useless.

Over to you, 'experts' and thank you in advance

re: Canon Pixma MP520 printer driver

2008-05-03 Thread Anthony Joshua Brow
Hello all,

Further regards the above, despite having tried several Canon Drivers
from different sites, the printer will not print, only chases an empty
page thru the printer.

However, I have downloaded the German Turbo print free version and it
works excellent, BUT it leaves their brand name in amongst
what one is printing. ( their driver is only for trial and if one likes
it, one has to pay Turboprint USD $30.00) for it).

Again I ask , where is the problem ? Is it in Hardy Heron ? Or has Canon
not kept up-to-date, or have they not been advised of the
new Ubuntu 8.04 by Canonical ?

Is it worthwhile to question Canonical in the UK about this ?? As I
mentioned before, I had this printer working with a driver from
Canon Asia in Dapper Drake.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

re: Canon Pixma Mp520 printer

2008-05-03 Thread Anthony Joshua Brow
Hello folks,

When running Dapper Drake, I managed to download a driver for this
printer. I got this last year from Canon Asia. Now when trying
to print something now from the computer with Hardy Heron, the printer
will run the paper thru at the 'print command, but does not print
anything.

What is the difference now ? Does it have something to do with the
Canon updates to these drivers ??

The Driver Number from Canon Singapore as well as from Canon Australia
is the same CNIJFILTER-common_2.80-1_i386.deb
But the the Singapore driver was updated 17 April 2008 issue nbr
0100083403
The driver from Canon Australia was updated 29 Jan 2008 Same issue
number.

The printer works ok on WinXp side, but I prefer to stay on the Ubuntu
side.

The printer worked reasonably well on Dapper Drake, although there was
not the benefit of a user manual that could be used in Ubuntu.

I tried CUPS, but there seems to be no driver for Ubuntu there.

Can anybody please, shed some light on this. ??Many thanks

After checking for the existance of a driver for above printer (linux
