I can't really say what you're problem here might be, but skype doesn't play
too well with pulseaudio, especially not on Hardy. On Intrepid I have skype
installed through the medibuntu repos and it all works perfectly

All I had to do was plug it in and recent versions of ubuntu (definitely
gutsy and hardy) just pick it up and 20 seconds later I'm connected - that's
without changing any of the default config afaik, and without touching
anything. Must be one of the good ones :) :S. Below is the output of lsusb

Not sure if this would be even remotely related, but I've seen some strange
things happen since I have an IR receiver on my PC, and occasionally other
IR equipment (most notably IR controlled micro helipcopters) will be
translated as a remote signal which will make things happen (in my case,
volume changes, bringing up logout dialog).

If you go to the area where you select your screen, there is a checkbox for
a widescreen monitor... make sure this is deselected.

I've also found that totem-gstreamer (the default in ubuntu) doesn't display
menus, but totem-xine does.
A "sudo apt-get install totem-xine" should do that.

I'm pretty certain that's a complete reinstall, since every single package
on the system must be replaced with a version compiled for amd64.
Additionally there are a few things that don't work so well on amd64, eg
Adobe Flash (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/Flash).
Your /home directory should be fine for use on the amd64 system though, so
if you have that on a separate partition you shouldn't need to wipe that.

Hope that helps :)

I'm not too sure what happened above. Essentially, it is preferred if you do
not send email in HTML form since many people prefer to use email clients
that are unable to display it - meaning that one has to wade through the
HTML to read your message. In the Windows world, most email clients are
Outlook (Express) / Thunderbird and a couple of others that can all read
HTML, so this is less of an issue. (Purists will also argue that HTML does
not belong in email from a philosophical point of view ;)). Maybe someone
just took what you said in the wrong way?

The other point raised was that Comic Sans MS is a Microsoft font - hence
many people on this list won't be able to see it anyway. Comic Sans MS is
available on Ubuntu, but not installed by default.

I, personally, think your email manners are fine :).

>

With regards to your original question, could it be that the people whose
email opens as an attachment are those with an attached signature? Usually
this is seen as an attachment with the filename signature.asc. It is also
possible (but unlikely, I would think) that outlook express doesn't
recognise the character encoding of these emails. Were these problems fixed
in Thunderbird?

For your thunderbird question, did you set the text option via the HTML
section of settings in the Composition tab? Not having a windows version
handy I can't describe the exact method of getting there, but I think thats
where it's set.

Cheers,

Matt

The point of planet.ubuntu.org.au is to provide a central place where the
diverse range of people, backgrounds, and opinions that make up the
Ubuntu-Au LoCo team can be represented. If someone on the planet has raised
a point that you disagree with, you have every right to post your opinion.
However, you cannot deny them the freedom to diplomatically present their
opinion on certain matters, no matter how vehemently you may disagree with
it.

If you think you have informative / interesting material to contribute to
planet.ubuntu.org.au, then you are most welcome to do so.
