Re: Thank you!

2009-03-05 Thread SuperGeek
Thanks for telling me and all. I was thinking that perhaps my email
hadn't got past the moderators, being a bit too gushing. Yea, WINE
doesn't work quite as I expected, but I reckon it'll still come in
useful. Ta for the STK release... You have to love that new battle
arena.
When I get my new computer, I might attempt a dual-boot, or whatever
it's called when you have two different O/S's... one hard disk for
each system! Linux is great and all, don't get me wrong, but WINE just
doesn't quite cut it when it comes to the programs I want to run. I
admit, I'm a gamer, and Linux isn't all gaming yet, but considering I
can only play at the weekends, and I have plenty of distractions even
then, I don't want to finally sit down and get bombarded by error
after error from Windows. If I must liken the operating systems to
cars, Mac is a Prius (Environmental fashion statement) Windows is the
'Flatmobile' from Flatout 2 (Not very practical, very nice until it
crashes) and Ubuntu is my Rigs of Rods Volvo modded truck: Fast as
hell, looks pretty, doesn't crash (It has a spring loaded arm to fling
me over obstacles), open source, grips and handles like a snowplough
on steroids and it can STILL tow a trailer!

Love to know any noob-friendly tutorials on Linux file types. I'm a
little in the dark on what to click on in my downloaded files.

Help!

2009-03-03 Thread SuperGeek
Uh oh. I'm in the blender now.
Ok, here's what happened. I was using the Add/Remove to download some
files, while playing Sauerbraten (Cube 2). Unfortunately, while
loading a map, Sauerbraten crashed, as it has a tendency to do so
occasionally. I was forced to reboot my computer, and I fear that the
downloaded files were badly corrupted. None of the programs I was
installing worked, and now every time I try using the package manager,
the update manager, or anything like that, it comes up with this error
message:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a'
to correct the problem.

E: _cache-> open() failed, please report.

I might have only installed Ubuntu last week, and it was my first ever
Linux distro, but I at least recognized the command 'dpkg --configure
-a' as a Terminal command, which seems to be the Linux version of the
DOS prompt. I put in the terminal command and it comes up with this:

dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege

So what's a superuser? I set up this computer, and I gave my user
account full access to everything. So why is it telling me this?
