2018-04-24 Thread peter baker
hey jared

I can see that http://www.ubuntu-au.org/ redirects to
loco.ubuntu.com/teams/ubuntu-au/

redirecting to loco.ubuntu.com/teams/ubuntu-au/ as well

ubuntu 10.04 available via ubuntu.net.au

2010-04-29 Thread peter baker
good morning fellow ubuntu users

I have started offering ubuntu 10.04 "lucid lynx" via ubuntu.net.au

I will download and burn all versions this weekend

I have decided to revamp the site a little.

due to popular demand, I have stared offering kubuntu (in 32 and 64 bit) and
netbook remix for the first time. I may start offering the alternate
versions for upgrades from previous versions of ubuntu if there is a big
enough demand for it

I have also increased prices across the range from $2.60 to $3 per disc.
this includes postage. this is the first time I have increased prices in a
number of years.

I'm also looking around for a way I can accept credit card payments for
those people that don't use paypal. does someone in the community have such
a facility setup that we can use to process payments for a fee? of course I
would still be sending the discs out so you won't have to worry about that

happy ordering!

Re: A local Shipit service for regional users

2010-03-18 Thread peter baker
hey guys

I have been following the discussion on a local Shipit service for regional
users with interest. I setup www.ubuntu.net.au a couple of years ago with
the aim of making ubuntu available to people who have hassles downloading or
burning the distro themsleves. I get quite a few orders from really remote
communities, esp in WA so I guess it is doing what it is meant to do.

how popular is the service? I get around 30 unique visitors to the site
every day. from that I usually get 1 or 2 orders/day. most of the orders
come via paypal although I do accept stamps in the mail. I get some lovely
comments via letters that people send me. so its not a lot of orders but it
is consistent and it is growing

so. I think your *free* aussie shipit service for ubuntu 10.04 is a great
idea. I think the thing that is going to slow you down is postage costs,
every cd costs $1.10 in postage. I'm happy to provide a description of what
you guys are doing and a link on the main page of www.ubuntu.net.au I
already link to the download section of ubuntu.com so that people can
download their own copy.

I don't think that the leader of a community has a right to tell the
community how the position of leader is created or maintained. I believe we
should have regular elections for leader positions within the community to
ensure that the community remains vibrant/active.

ShipIt Local

2009-04-28 Thread peter baker
hey guys

I have been doing a local cd mailout of ubuntu for some time now via
http://ubuntu.net.au

I charge $2.60 per cd via paypal/credit card or ask people to send me a $2
stamp if they want to order by mail.

at the moment I'm just burning cd's of jaunty, the good folks at canonical
usually send me some factory pressed discs, this normally happens about a
month after each release launches.

I like the idea of pressing our own discs here, but every time I have looked
into it it has been expensive and you need to order a decent quantity

suggestions welcome

edwin

its an interesting point. if you goto http://planet.ubuntu.org.au you can't
seem to find too much about adding your blog to the planet. I thought
people were just posting directly to it, but it looks like the site is
actually aggregating feeds. pretty cool

venue for the next release launch in melbourne

2008-04-09 Thread peter baker
hey guys

with the next release of ubuntu coming up in a fortnight I notice nobody has
promoted a venue for a party in melbourne party.

I suggest the Horse Bazaar digital media
barin the city. They have
wifi setup. I had a quick chat to them and they are
happy to host the event. I was thinking of starting around 7pm. at 8pm
they have a low key chill dj playing. Unless anyone has a problem with this
venue and can suggest something else I will put it on the website and wiki

port blocking on bigpond

2008-01-25 Thread peter baker
hey guys

I know this does'nt relate specifically to ubuntu

I'm trying to set up gmail through thunderbird using imap

I set up the connection as gmail told me to

the connection just times out. I rang bigpond cable tech support to see if
they were blocking port 993, they told that a) they don't support gmail and
b) they don't know what ports they block.

anyone know if they block port 993?
