Windows mobile works great as a modem but I wouldn't recommend them
they are annoy me so I am waiting until telstra releases an android
phone I just hope that works as a modem.

Thanks all for your help I am using ubuntu 9.04 and "network
connections" for configurations. I have tried *21#,#21# and *99# ,a
pop up top right of screen comes down and says "GSM network
disconnected" then goes away. Well this looks like my phone is not
happy with ubuntu any suggestion on phones that like ubuntu (except
nokia) as this one is due for replacment anyway. This does not mean
that I give in, there might be people in the same boat so any tricks
to get it going are welcome

I chased this up last year and had to register at the zte forum

The forum is next to useless for linux related info for the 156 and
basically says no possible connection even for contacts, calender no
mention of data connection.

Later I found this about connecting a ZTE modem
.
It may give a hint, I didn't chase it up.

The 156 worked as a modem in WinXP but only with the ZTE application
so it should be possible.

Good luck, please let us know if you get it working.  I noticed a
number of trolls on forums claiming success but asking for a direct
e-mail to them - I think that is BS.
