Hi Anthony, I have used Gramps, but only to view the .ged file produced on a program on a Windows machines.
There should definitely be a way to do what you're asking.. I believe that there is some 'trick' to make it work. Sorry, I couldn't be more helpful. ( I am interested in the answer as well..)
