Re: 12.04LTS and the Telstra 4G mobile wireless modem (Geoffrey)

2012-09-04 Thread Peter Kukums
Just to reiterate a comment I made to this thread previously. Are you
sure the APN is not telstra.internet?? There is a difference between
modems sold by Telstra and those sold by Big Pond. If you bought it at a
Telstra shop it will be a Telstra one with an APN of telstra.internet

Re: 12.04LTS and the Telstra 4G mobile wireless modem

2012-09-04 Thread Geoffrey
I have made some progress with this Internet modem (but I'm not there
yet).
Firstly I established the current sierra modem driver version in each of
my two computers using the terminal command: 'modinfo sierra'
PC1 with 10.04LTS: v1.3.8
PC2 with 12.04LTS: v.1.7.16
I then referred to the Sierra Wireless link given by Jared Norris
(thanks) and downloaded the latest driver tar file: v.1.2_1740
Note: This is listed for kernels 2.6.32 (10.04) on up to the last
mentioned 3.0.x. The kernel for 12.04 is 3.2.0.
The procedure used for PC2 (12.04LTS) was an abbreviated version of that
given by Sierra:
1. Open the tar file and extract the three files Makefile, sierra.c and
sierra_net.c to Desktop.
2. Move these three files to the Home folder (directory).
3. Open Terminal and enter the command: cd /home/geoffrey
The prompt is now 'geoffrey'
4. Enter the command: make
This should compile the driver files. It did.
 Stay in the terminal.
5. To install the divers enter: sudo make install
(Enter your sudo password if requested)
6. Verify installation with the command: modinfo sierra
This duly showed that new sierra version v.1.2_1740 was successfully
installed.

I then plugged in the Sierra modem Aircard 320U (not 360U as I have said
incorrectly previously), The blue power led was on and the blue signal
LED flashed indicating that it was ready to communicate.

I then created a new connection name using Ubuntu's connection manager
which correctly identified the modem as the Sierra Aircard 320U. I
entered my previous user name and password and APN (telstra.bigpond).
Next I opened the Internet connection menu and found all the Mobile
Broadband connection names including the new one just created. These
have not been seen before so it seemed to be working at last.
However attempts to connect failed because the transmission signal (the
radiating applet) stopped after only 2 seconds, not long enough to make
a connection. It is not normal for the transmission to stop so quickly.

And this is as far as I have got. Close but not near enough. Any further
advice will be gratefully received.

2012-08-19 Thread Peter Kukums
Hi Geoffrey,

just a stupid question as I may have missed the beginning of this
thread. But did you get the modem from Big Pond or from Telstra? You may
say that these are the same company, but I have found that if you get
the modem directly from Telstra the APN to use may be telstra.internet

That is what I have had to use with my 3G modems.

Cheers,
Peter

I found a link that you may or may not find useful -
http://mycusthelpadmin.net/SIERRAWIRELESS/_cs/AnswerDetail.aspx?sSessionID=5180C4D3AD1341438EDD065089DFC5A4QTKEYQOQ&aid=44

It appears the drivers for this model aren't in by default on any
Linux OS yet but they do have instructions for installing from that
website. This may mean you need to follow these steps every time your
kernel is upgraded though.

Re: 12.04LTS and the Telstra 4G mobile wireless modem

2012-08-18 Thread Geoffrey
Thanks to Harry, Colin, Peter and Ian for your advice. I respond to each
in turn.
Harry: I will follow up on the Huawei Wireless USB modem. For the
present I intend to pursue Telstra for an answer, rather than let them
off the hook. I believe that it would be a simple task for them to laod
a PC with Ubuntu and test the modem, after which they could let Linux
users have instructions on using the modem with a Linux OS. Telstra have
told me that they have used Ubuntu but without clarification.

Colin: the lsusb command in Terminal lists the modem as 'ID 0f3d:68aa
Airprime, Incorporated'. So its presence is recognised.
the lsmod command has no match for 'UHCI' or anything similar. Vaguely
similar are 'usbhid Used by 0' and 'hid Used by 1 usbhid'.

Peter: I have consulted the lists you recommended but there is no direct
reference to the 360U modem. I am still looking up the links to see if
there are other clues. From the remarks in the lists it seems that the
Ubuntu network connection manager is being used correctly and should
show the assigned connection name in the menu (which it is not doing
now).

Ian: I am using the APN: telstra.bigpond. I believe that it is the
correct plan name. However I would like to see the screen grab of your
settings so please email. Thank you.

Lastly to all: If I am able, with help, to get this modem working on
Ubuntu 12.04 I will certainly post the result on this Mailing List.

RE: 12.04LTS and the Telstra 4G mobile wireless modem

2012-08-16 Thread Harry Degenaar
My experience with Telstra has never been good. I have a Telstra supplied
(September 2008) Next G Sierra AirCard 880U USB Wireless Modem. Within weeks
after having purchased this device from Telstra, Sierra reported though an
End-Of-Life communication that the AirCard 880U was no longer available for
sale. Telstra never offered any support for getting the device to work on a
Linux OS and after trying for weeks through various Linux forums (including
Ubuntu). Ubuntu versions in 2008 - 2010 would recognize the device as a
Sierra AirCard 880U, but I was unable to connect this to my BIGPOND account.
Ubuntu versions after 2010 did not recognize the device at all. I gave up
tying to get it to work on a Linux-OS; now I still have it working on a
back-up Windows XP-Desktop. In 2010 I obtained a Huawei Wireless USB Modem
from Virgin, their support for Ubuntu was first class, they gave me a
document with all the required steps and I had the device up in no time.

Re: 12.04LTS and the Telstra 4G mobile wireless modem

2012-08-15 Thread Geoffrey
Further to my previous message: On Telstra's advice I checked the memory
card inside the 4G modem. It is titled 'BIGPOND' which means the APN
name is 'telstra.bigpond'. This is the same as I have been using with
the old BP3-EXT modem for which a connection name appears in the menu.
However no name appears in the menu when the 4G modem is plugged into
the PC's USB socket and the modem signals readiness to relay data.
Why not? (I ask myself). The modem is a standard UMTS, HSPA device and
therefore should be recognised by Ubuntu. Or have I missed something?
Thank you for any help.
