I found when i set up Bigpond wireless on my gutsy laptop, i didn't have to do any of the tricky things that they talk about on the Quozl page. >From my previous post on this list: > It may not be relevant, but i got a Telstra Bigpond wireless broadband > modem working with my laptop (running gutsy) on the weekend with > surprising ease. > > All that was required was to load the appropriate module (once the > device was recognised and the device id obtained from lsusb): > modprobe usbserial vendor=0x16d8 product=0x6280 > This made it possible to run a modem connection over /dev/ttyUSB1. The modprobe command would have to be done every time you boot, but i believe you can set the vendor and product ids (which are obtained from lsusb) in /etc/modprobe.d/options and they will stick across reboots. (I haven't tried this.) Then all you would have to do is modprobe usbserial and set up the dialup connection in network manager. We have a few from Telstra for wireless broadband, their linux based as you can see the busybox comments on the log page, but I have not been able to access a shell yet. They have 4 ethernet ports 802.11b/g two usb ports for printer and hdd sharing and two phone jacks for using the phone services over that sim card too. So nice units, bit expensive though, but we got them included in the data plans anyway. - Karl -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

Hi Norm, I successfully got one of these sticks working on a friend's 8.04 laptop, however this friend has a habit of 'meddling' and for some reason it stopped working. I haven't had time to try fixing it yet. But, you might like to know that the most useful page I found was this one : http://quozl.netrek.org/bp3-usb/ - just scroll about half way down the page to the section "Introduction- After becoming the focal point for Linux support on another Maxon product, Quozl was lent a Maxon BP3-USB..." On a related note, one of my pet gripes is these "USB Modem" type devices - even in windows, they are a pain in the backside, I know this from experience as I work for an ISP in Adelaide. I've been waiting for a router that can be used with Wireless broadband type devices, and we finally found one that's just been released. No feedback yet, but worth a look - http://au.billion.com/product/wireless/bipac7402gx.php - this device, once configured, means no configuration AT ALL on the actual computer! Anyway, best of luck - would love to hear any success (or stress!) stories. Callan -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

Telstra Broadband Wireless Modem
Good morning all, I have had a number of inquiries, as to whether there is a solution to using a Telstra Broadband Wireless Modem (USB Key Style) with Ubuntu 8.04. It has to be simple as I can presently only give these folk email support... they live waaay out bush.
