Totally get what you're saying Erich, and exactly right that users need
avenues for getting formally backported software on Ubuntu. This is a
situation I've found myself in on both sides: as an upstream maintainer
wanting to get new releases out to LTS users, and as a distro developer
handling ubuntu-backports requests. You're right that the bottleneck in
the process is a huge hinderance. There are other fundamental
challenges to it, such as backporting applications that need updated
dependencies too (which is not at all uncommon).

And I get what you're saying about throwing babies out with bathwater
and the desire to "never give up".

But I'd point out the Big-Picture Goal here is getting properly vetted
software backports out to users. For that, there are *many* options
(snaps, PPAs, SRU process refinements, docker, et al) that have come
about since the initial introduction of -backports. There are pros/cons
to these, of course, but at a system level I'd argue that these other
options may be why demand for (and interest in maintaining)
ubuntu-backports dried up. The other options solve problems -backports
can't, or are more convenient or more flexible.

So, I would suggest viewing this not as "quitting" but rather a
recognization that ubuntu-backports hasn't worked as a process, and that
letting it go will open space for other ideas to thrive. We may be
better off to invest our limited time and attention by contributing to
the backporting processes that are already attracting volunteer
attention.

[Bug 1183154] [NEW] Please backport freecol (0.10.5+dfsg-1) (universe) from quantal

2013-05-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Please backport freecol (0.10.5+dfsg-1) (universe) from quantal to
precise.

Reason for the backport:

0.10.5 brings significantly smarter AI, improved graphics, several new mods,
various new configuration options, and a ton of bug fixes. This is the same
version included in quantal and raring.

Release notes can be seen at these links:
  http://www.freecol.org/news/releases.html
  http://www.freecol.org/docs/freecol-changelog-version-0.10.4.pdf
  http://www.freecol.org/news/releases/Page-2.html

Testing:

Mark off items in the checklist [X] as you test them, but please leave the
checklist so that backporters can quickly evaluate the state of testing.

You can test-build the backport in your PPA with backportpackage:
$ backportpackage -u ppa:/ -s raring -d precise task
$ backportpackage -u ppa:/ -s raring -d quantal task

* precise:
[X] Package builds without modification
[X] freecol installs cleanly and runs

Tested locally on precise using package built via pbuilder. I tested
both playing an existing saved game (from 0.10.0), and creating a new
game. There were no major issues encountered.

[Bug 1130970] [NEW] Please backport task 2.1.2-0ubuntu1 (universe) from raring

2013-02-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
Public bug reported:

Please backport task 2.1.2-0ubuntu1 (universe) from raring to precise,
quantal.

Reason for the backport:

The 2.1 series provides new features not included in precise's
2.0 series, most notably being User Defined Attributes. It also
includes many bug fixes, performance updates and other minor features
which may be of interest to LTS users.

A few critical bug fixes have been SRU'd from the 2.1 series to precise;
these are direct backports from the 2.1 series so will all be included
with this 2.1.2 version.

For quantal this provides an upgrade from 2.1.1 to 2.1.2. This is
basically a minor bugfix update but does bring some documentation and
test updates. The one patch included in quantal's current
2.1.1-0ubuntu2 is also included in this package.

Testing:

Mark off items in the checklist [X] as you test them, but please leave the
checklist so that backporters can quickly evaluate the state of testing.

You can test-build the backport in your PPA with backportpackage:

[Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org

2011-10-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
This bug still exists, but we are tracking it at bug #772873; this
report is a dupe of that one. I would set this as a dupe, but because
this one has so many dupes on it, launchpad chokes.

Anyway, subscribe to bug #772873 if you want to follow it.

The short story is, it seems to be a bug in the fglrx driver, we're
going to escalate it to AMD. Assuming it gets fixed we'll try to
include the updated driver in the x-updates PPA. See bug #772873 for
workarounds and more information.

[Bug 264462] Re: [RV 6xx HD 3870] Driver fails to load on 2 Sep daily

2009-01-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
radeontool in Jaunty* can be used to assist in debugging this issue. After
installing it, you run it like this:
radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_good.txt
radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_broke.txt

Run it two times. Once when you have a working screen (for any driver),
and once in the broken case (either from the tty console or logged into
the sick box remotely). Attach both of those to this bug report, and we
can then forward this issue upstream. Thanks ahead of time!

For more info see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen

[* Note: radeontool is available in earlier versions of Ubuntu but is
too old; if you need to run it on an older version of Ubuntu, you can
obtain and build it from the upstream git tree at

2009-01-17 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

The xserver-xorg-video-ati driver version that is part of the 02 Sep
daily build (Ubuntu i386) fails to start the display during the boot
sequence for either the live desktop or direct install modes, resulting
in a blank "X" display. The text terminals are accessible, and if I
edit xorg.conf to load either the "vesa" driver or the "radeonhd" driver
and restart the X terminal, the display works normally.

If one then continues to install to hard drive the same behavior
manifests on that installation...the radeon (ati) driver fails to start,
but either the VESA or radeonhd drivers work as expected.

I am not sufficiently knowledgeable to be able to determine if the
problem lies with the ati driver, xrandr or the "X" subsystem. If it is
any help, the display and video adapter are properly detected, but when
using the "ATI" driver xrandr -q returns inappropriate mode data. Xrandr
returns appropriate mode data when using both the "vesa" and "radeonhd"
  drivers.

The display is an Apple Cinema HD 23 Inch and the video adapter is an
  ATI HD3870.

I've built 3 sets of packages, one for each patch and one with both
patches together:

Please test each of these and see which one(s) solve the issue if any.

The patches themselves look fine to me and low risk, we just need to
verify they do solve the issue, and if so what needs committed.

[Bug 96586] Re: Correct multiple inkscape issues in Feisty (SRU and Backport)

2007-07-25 Thread Bryce Harrington
Scott, the original request was to get 0.45.1 available in Feisty, as it
contains a large number of bug fixes. SRU is only going to accept the
three crash bugs, and says the remainder must be done as backports. The
description was edited to only list those three bugs, however I believe
many of the 0.45.1 fixes (such as the several blur feature fixes) are
highly desired by users and feel it is important for 0.45.1 to be
available to Feisty users. (In fact, the reason 0.45.1 exists at all is
because 0.45.0 was hurried in order to make the Feisty feature freeze
cutoff, since the Inkscape developers love Ubuntu - it is ironically
unfortunate that today Ubuntu is about the only distro that *doesn't*
have 0.45.1 available for its users.)

Of those three crash bugs, the odg crash seems to be highly important;
both the steps to reproduce it and the patch to fix it are already
included in this bug report (comments #9 and #12 respectively). Of the
other two crash bugs, with the tspan editing bug I am not able to
reproduce nor find steps to reproduce documented in a bug report (I
suspect it was discovered in a code review rather than through usage).
The comment node handling bug only occurs in the tutorials (easily
reproduced though - select a shape in a tutorial and do
Effects->Color->Remove Red) and I'm not sure if it would qualify as
"high-impact".

[Bug 120939] Re: X11 warnings after upgrade when moving windows

2007-07-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, not sure what is causing this, but since it occurs with kde but not
gnome, it sounds like it's an issue somewhere in kde. Refiling into
kdebase... hopefully someone there can help pin it down.

Subscribing feisty-backports. The xserver-xorg-video-nv 2.1.2 driver

[Bug 117013] Re: Backport of fglrx to Feisty needed for radeon x1300 support

2007-07-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
Assigning to feisty-backports. A gutsy version of fglrx that fixes
radeon x1300 has been uploaded and confirmed to fix.

Jeff, Chris, and acron, please verify the feisty debs I've provided
solve the issue, and also if you could, please work directly with the
feisty-backport team to get this added to feisty.

[Bug 120939] Re: X11 warnings after upgrade when moving windows

2007-07-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
By chance do you have any flash running in the firefox windows when this
occurs? If so, then it may be related to bug 14911.

In any case, if you have encountered this after upgrading to feisty from
a prior version, can you please re-run the xorg configuration tool, to
see if it is simply some leftover from your prior xorg.conf? (Note, if
you have binary video drivers installed, you may need to remove them
first, and then reinstall after.)

 $ sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.dapper
 $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

[Moving into xorg package - it's not yet clear this is in libx11.]
