2007-02-14 Thread Martin Meredith
Kees, for "rar" this is true, however, it needs a small modification to
use the statically linked binary (as we found out in debian!) the
package rar-3.7b1-2 in debian has the neccessary changes.

Regarding unrar - it's the above patch
(http://librarian.launchpad.net/6412402/fix_cve_3.5.4_clean) that needs
to be applied to dapper and edgy. I've got a breezy patch in the works

2007-02-12 Thread Martin Meredith
Quote from email

All these changes in rarvm.cpp code are related to endianness issue
on big endian computers. So users may notice these fixes only on big
endian machine.

Besides, I forgot to mention that real vulnerability was fixed
in GetPassword function in consio.cpp. So if you use 3.6.x version
of this function, please upgrade it to 3.7.3 code.

Re: [Bug 52486] Re: GnuCash 2.0.0

2007-01-31 Thread Martin Meredith
This builds fine changing ${source:Version} and ${binary:Version} to
${Source-Version}, however, this would break binNMUs in debian - so is
not a bug, and also would create unneccesary delta from debian.

I'm being advised against making delta between Ubuntu/Debian just for
backports, and also against making delta between feisty and backports,
so I'm rejecting this.

2007-01-31 Thread Martin Meredith
Current Feisty version uses a ${source:Version} which isn't known in
dapper's dpkg-dev, causing it to error out with

pkg-deb: parse error, in file `debian/nagios2/DEBIAN/control' near line
6 package `nagios2':
`Depends' field, reference to `nagios2-common': error in version:
version string is empty
dh_builddeb: command returned error code 512

This builds fine changing ${source:Version} and ${binary:Version} to

not a bug, and also would create unneccesary delta from debian.

Colin - is this at all possible? also, some of them will need to be
installed to build against for the other versions - does backports build
against backports at the moment?

Daniel has raised some objections to the backport... I'm quite happy for
this to either go the way of a private repository, or through
-backports, whichever way people think suitable. People have been using
Jokosher fine with the run script that Stuart made, with no adverse
effects, and a quote follows from #gstreamer (FUD snipped - full log
available on request)

MikeS, I have plans to backport gstreamer 0.10.11 from feisty to
edgy
so that i can backport jokosher 0.2 :P
but i'm wondering what issues that may cause
Mez: that's not a backport, that's just "using 0.10.11 on edgy".
I do that all the time, it works fine.
MikeS, well I'm on about ubuntu backports
If new updated Ubuntu packages are built for an application, then
they go into Ubuntu Backports. See
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports
Mez: well, yeah, ubuntu inherited some terminology misuse from
debian. That's not a good reason to continue misusing the terminology.
MikeS, so -if I were to (using my definition) "backport" gstreamer
0.10.11 it wouldnt cause any issues at all /
Mez: running gstreamer 0.10.11 on edgy is normal. Many of the
gstreamer developers do precisely that. If _anything_ breaks, we fucked
up, please tell us. I don't expect it to, though.

What are people's thoughts

[Bug 68158] Re: Firefox 2.0

2006-11-07 Thread Martin Meredith
Hi there Douglas.

As John's stated, it's not possible to backport firefox without
backporting a lot of different applications with it.

These applications depend on having certain versions of system libraries
in certain places.

The way backports works is to update packages and replace them, not to
have packages that work along side them.

Because of this it is impossible to backport firefox without backporting
a massive chain of packages (188 packages to be precise)

I do not believe you will find any member of the backports team who is
willing to do that.

As stated above, it is easy to run Firefox 2 alongside the package in
ubuntu, and this does not affect your system.

However, there is always the chance that when 2.0 is known to fix
security issues in 1.5, 2.0 will be uploaded to -security

Apologies for the influx of mail

2006-10-27 Thread Martin Meredith
To all that are subscribed to ubuntu-backports@lists.ubuntu.com

I apologise in advance for the influx of mail you are about to recieve.

This is due to the fact that I have just managed to get round to tending to the
1300 pending moderator requests
on the mailing list.

There were some issues with the fact that emails from Launchpad to the mailing
list were not being recieved correctly,
and being put into the moderation queue. I have now resolved this issue, and
after the influx of mail that is about to
be sent, the list will return to normal, and emails from Launchpad will be
recieved correctly by the list.

Once again, I apologise in advance,

Kind Regards,

Backporting GRUB (was: [Bug 22220] Correct modules for I2O-based raid are not loaded)

I don't believe we should backport grub. Not at all... as you said - one
false move and it goes kaboom ... we get a load of people on our backs and
well - simply it's not worth the hassle. Even if Colin came along himself
and made sure Grub was perfectly backportable - I wouldn't be happy seeing
it go into backports. It's just one of those things I don't think we should
go near)

1) dapper sources already adjuested

2) less load on riddell's servers, better support- official, stuff like
that. - plus people will get it through backports - less hassle for people
- means they have nice things easily.

Riddell and I have been working on this for about a week now :D

lol - oh - and correction: things wont need to be re-backported just the
KDE 3.5.1 packages that arent base (kde-games etc)

Amarok - latest dapper backport

2005-12-30 Thread Martin Meredith
Hey there all!

Had a request from siretart to backport the latest version of amarok
from dapper to breezy.

I've tested it and it doesnt FTBFS... but I've got no way of testing
(till I get my main machine back in a couple of weeks) whether it
actually works on breezy or not

Would anyone be willing to test them - I've built debs (though no
special version numbers - so make sure you remove them after testing or
you may break if you upgrade to dapper)

Hey Rienhard... assuming I still have access to edit REVU - I'd be more
than happy to help with it - I can code this up - and if tiber can
handle it - then superb :D

All really needs to do is an apt-get source and then a pbuild-breezy -
the hardest bits are going to be behind the scenes doing the checking
and mailing or whatever - but sounds like a good idea :D though it'd
probably have to have some sort of database and an admin back end (so we
can check what version was last tried to be backported, and set a "do
not ever try and backport this even if the version increases - it's a
waste of our time - stuff like - the toolchain etc:P)

2005-11-01 Thread Martin Meredith
That's actually something that was brought up here... about the new
firefox + whole KDE thing

2 different suggestions:

1) work like backports.org
2) pin to dapper/breezy + have an app that unpins things if the user
wants them (or sets a higher priority or something)

What do you think?

Re: [Bug 3318] 5.04 updates

2005-11-01 Thread Martin Meredith
I think that the fact that Riddell has managed to "backport" (in a
slightly different sense of the word) KDE 3.4.1 to hoary etc etc means
that KDE shouldnt be that much of a problem, espescially for Dapper->
breezy where we wont have any major changes.

It's not that hard to do, but i agree... toolchain shouldnt be
touched... and if it's requied to be touched to upgrade something...
then it shouldnt be backported

Re: USN-186-1 (mozilla, mozilla-firefox) updates broken on Hoary

2005-10-14 Thread Martin Meredith
Can I make a point... I don't think official backports people should be
pushed over to someone else... but I do agree that unofficial should be
closed... the stuff that cant be soerted for official can go in extras...

John, if I remember correctly, you told me that once official was
released, that the old repos would be made so that they were 403'd ...
but that never seemed to happen.

John, you are still in charge of the old repos, and I URGE you to close
them, but, I cannot do that, as you know.

I'm sorry for not being around, but I totall agree about closing the old
repos, they cause too many problems.

If the decision is made for the official backports people to step back,
I'll step back gracefully, but I don't think anything should be taken
out on me for something I have no control over except the ability to try
and persuade.

Regards,
Martin Meredith
