[Bug 286337] Re: Please backport OpenSSH 5.1 to Hardy

2009-10-09 Thread Pär Andersson
> A server edition like LTS purports to be requires something better
than SSH 4.8.

Nope, on a server you typically value stability more than getting the
latest bleeding edge version. 4.8 is actually a quite recent version
if you compare to what is included in other currently supported
"enterprise" Linux distributions:

* Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5): OpenSSH 4.3 (this of-course also
  includes derivates like CentOS 5)

* SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES10): OpenSSH 4.2

Also remember that all distributions, including Ubuntu, backports
security fixes for SSH.

[Bug 267391] Re: Please Backport aMSN

2008-09-07 Thread Pär Andersson
Oh I am so stupid! The other bug is in gutsy backports, removing
duplicate mark.

My comment on the other one about having to change Build-Depends tcl-tls
to tcltls to backport is however as valid in both gutsy and hardy.

[Bug 263316] Re: Please update aMSN backport to version 0.97.2

2008-08-31 Thread Pär Andersson
No, tcl-tls should not be backported. That package have been renamed in
intrepid, it is named tcltls (without the "-") in hardy.

If amsn should be backported the Build-Depends simply needs to be
changed from tcl-tls to tcltls.

[Bug 258821] Re: xmonad

2008-08-17 Thread Pär Andersson
Just filling in a little more details about this:

xmonad 0.6 in hardy, and 0.7 in hardy-backports does not support
Xinerama.

This is caused by libghc6-x11-dev 1.4.1-1 in hardy (source package
"haskell-x11"). The package is simply built without xinerama-support. In
the current deibian/intrepid-version 1.4.2-1 this have been fixed by
adding a build-dep on libxinerama-dev, but note that this is also a new
upstream version.

The backport is also a bit tricky. All xmonad-packages for some weird
reason have hard coded exakt version dependencies on 1.4.1-1. So after
backporting haskell-x11 you cant just rebuild xmonad and xmonad-contrib,
you have to edit their control-files and update the version everywhere
first. (This would of course also be required if haskell-x11 should be
SRU-ed instead of backported)

With modified dependencies the resulting packages work fine. I have been
running my own backport of haskell-x11 1.4.2 xmonad+xmonad-contrib 0.7 a
while now without any problems. No changes was made except the
dependencies as mentioned, but I could post the trivial debdiffs if
necessary.

[Bug 253464] Re: Please backport rdiff-backup for hardy

2008-07-31 Thread Pär Andersson
I don't think this should qualify as a backport as the only reason is to fix a
bug.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#How to request new packages

Also the bug is quite serious (failed backups could easily cause
dataloss) so this should be a SRU. Have you looked at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates ?

[Bug 233859] Re: Please backport kernel 2.6.25

2008-06-25 Thread Pär Andersson
-backports is for applications, not big system components like the
kernel. Read "How to request new packages" on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports, especially the
following quote:

These are the rules we try to follow when backporting packages:
...
3. Backports should only affect themselves, and not cause any consequences to
the rest of the system.
...

A kernel will definitely affect the rest of the system :)

I know that Hardys kernel have bugs, I have run into one of them myself.
The correct way is to get fixes for the specific bugs backported to
hardys 2.6.24 kernel and released as stable release updates.

[Bug 226587] Re: Please backport xmonad 0.7 from intrepid to hardy

2008-05-13 Thread Pär Andersson
Builds and works fine here as well using prevu.

However if xmonad is backported we really need to also backport xmonad-
contrib. This requires updating debian/control in the xmonad-contrib
source package and changing all the hard coded Build-Depends from 0.7-1
versions to 0.7-1~8.04prevu1. After this xmonad-contrib also builds fine
using prevu, and the extensions from there that I use works fine.

[Bug 135160] Please backport gnuserv 3.12.7-5

2007-08-27 Thread Pär Andersson
Public bug reported:

This is needed to work with emacs22 which is now in backports. emacs22
compability is the only change from 3.12.7-4.

I built the package in a feisty pbuilder and have been using it for
almost two weeks without any problem. I used the source package from
Debian, but there are no Ubuntu changes so that does not matter. The
reason for not submitting this backport request until now is that I had
to wait for my sync request to get the updated gnuserv into gutsy, see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133006

2007-08-16 Thread Pär Andersson
I have made my own backport using prevu and it is working very well.

Was going to request a backport now but found this bug instead and it
seems to be on its way already. Great news for me and others in the
Church of Emacs. :-)
