Re: [Ubuntu-BD] Ubuntu 8.10 DVD Problem

2009-04-17 Thread Tarin Mahmood
as far I understand,
wubi lets you boot up Ubuntu using the Windows boot loader. It creates a
virtual disk and boots to that disk, everything gets installed there. No Its
not Virtual machine. So there should not be any noticable performance loss.
but if the disk image gets corrupted you lose the installation. its a good
way to tryout Ubuntu, I guess.

I have no idea about wubi. Does it install ubuntu as standalone OS or is it
virtual machine-like environment? Virtual machine softwares may have issues
with these drivers. In that case i would recommend you to use vmware or

At the end of the mails you see the mailing list URL
 https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bd

Search in there with wvdial as the topic.

Usually you wont have to install driver.

you use this command in shell:

*sudo wvdialconf*
then edit the resulting configuratioin file using *sudo nano
/etc/wvdial.conf*
for the necessary settings to enable there.

After you set those.

Run :
*sudo wvdial*

and it should connect you to internet :)

Usually we have not reports saying Ubuntu failed to handle DVD/CD media
where windows succeeded.

[Ubuntu-BD] Ubuntu 8.10 DVD Problem

2009-04-17 Thread maSnun
Hello All,

I am Masnun from Khulna. I ordered ubuntu 8.10 on ship it and got my CD a
few days back. I tried to install Ubuntu as a dual boot along with my Vista
Black edition. It installed but the Grub doesn't work, so my Vista loads
automatically without giving me the chance to make a switch.. So I installed
Ubuntu inside Windows (Wubi). Everything's fine. I am not complaining that I
couldn't install Ubuntu as a standalone OS.

The current issue is with my BenQ Sata DVD ReWriter. Ubuntu seems to be
unable to handle it.

Vendor: Benq
Model: DW205S
MAX Speed: 20X

When I insert a CD into the drive and click on the CD/DVD icon inside my
Ubuntu, I get an error message saying something like "Can not mount. There
is no media". I have tried several times. No results.

I am a bit open source enthusiast and don't wanna leave Ubuntu. Please help
me out!
