Where have you heard that ext3 has issues with partitions more than 25
GB? Please be sure of the information first before believing it. As
far as I am aware, there is NO "issue" with ext3 and partitions larger
than 25GB. Maybe your hard drive is at fault.

ext3 is already a very stable filesystem. But ext4 is newer and
faster. But be sure to use a UPS, because it can lose data sometimes
when the power goes off.

[Ubuntu-BD] Help with ext3

2009-10-25 Thread maSnun
I have assigned about 239GB to my /home partition which is ext3 filesystem.
I have heard that ext3 has issues with partitions more than 25GB. I fear
that my installation will corrupt again.

Can I do anything to stop the oncoming crash ? Do you suggest switching to a
better FS? Perhaps like JFS or ext4? In that case, how do I convert my FS
without losing any data?

My System:

Ram - 1 GB
Processor - Celeron D (2.8 GHz)

Hard Disk 1 - Samsung 250 GB
Hard Disk 2 - Maxtor 40 GB

Ubuntu 9.04 has been installed on Hard Disk 1 with following partitions:

"/" - 1 GB
"/boot" - 1 GB
"/home" - 239 GB
swap - rest of the disk space

Hard Disk 2 has no partitions.

GRUB error 25 means that: "This error is returned if an unrecognized
command is entered into the command-line or in a boot sequence section
of a config file and that entry is selected"

You can follow the instructions posted at Ubuntuforums.org:

Boot with your Ubuntu installation CD
On the boot: prompt, type rescue and hit enter
Follow the instructions on the screen
When the computer is ready, assuming that /dev/hda is where your /boot
is located, type: grub-install /dev/hda.

the seperate /home partition is where all your own files are located,
like for example, your user account settings for the Pidgin chat
program, or your firefox bookmarks. So if you keep your /home
partition separate from your / partition, you can reinstall ubuntu,
and have your settings preserved.

[Ubuntu-BD] GRUB Error 25

2009-10-25 Thread maSnun
I have had a very bitter experience with GRUB Error 25.

I had to re-install my Ubuntu 9.04 again. I have been suggested to mount
"/home" to a separate partition during this new installation. I have done
that.

Please suggest me how I can prevent this from happening again?

And how does mounting "/home" in a separate partition help in saving my
personal data?
