[ubuntu-uk] Document Storage

2007-09-16 Thread Ian Pascoe
Morning Folks

In the list's opinion which is the best way to store documents?

In particular, as my own filing system is, well non existant, I was thinking
about scanning all necessary documents and then storing them eithre to HD or
CD / DVD.

I've been trying to work out in my own mind what would be the better way to
store these scanned documents that will maintain the clarity and be of
minimal size.

So far it's looking like storing them as a tiff image, but I'm not sure
whether it's worth the time to push them through an OCR tool and into an
appropriate document format. Either raw or compressed through something
like 7Zip into a self extracting file, or such like

It is not necessary for the stored images to be legal copies but are
merely there for my own reference.

Thoughts, apart from sorting out my paper filing system!

100DPI JPEG is usually fine for me - if you can, adjust the quality to get the
best compression while still leaving it readable.

Hi Ian,

I have been looking into the same possibility over the last few months.
Personally i would recommend PDF as it is easily accessible and a good
file size with ~300dpi.

One method of retrieval I did consider was http based searching with the
scanned image OCR'd, this would allow $filename.pdf and $filename.txt.
The later containing the 'best effort' of OCR. The web interface could
search the txt's for keywords and link to the corresponding PDF's.

Currently I have automated the scan process producing a PDF and an OCR'd
txt file. If I find time this week, I will try and work on it further -
and maybe create a project on launchpad hosting the source.

Kind Regards
Dave Walker

I've been moving users across from Windows to Linux for a while now,
with - on the large - reasonable success. Because I use Gnome, and
don't have much experience of using KDE, I've just always installed
Ubuntu by default and not really given Kubuntu the time of day.

Lately, I've demonstrated Ubuntu to some real computer novices who've
commented why is the start button at the top, and why are there two
bars at the top and bottom of the screen, who have then shaken their
heads in disapproval at this deviation from the Windows norm!

Kubuntu, I notice is much more similar to the interface they know and
love, so it'd make sense that it'd be the best choice for migrating
users from Windows. Is this true? Should I try using Kubuntu as novice
 users first Linux distro?

I have installed kde distros for new users who own the machines, and
who will be supported personally by me as a friend. I use kde myself
although not exclusively, and I still prefer it after a few years of
being a newbie.

My personal preference is based in its feature rich menus. I tend to
recommend it to real windows based newcomers who are intending to go
it alone because it looks a bit more like the windows layout
initially, and - the menus are feature rich. I believe there is
probably slightly less need for command line use initially with
kubuntu for example. (versions 7.04, say).

With my current experience level and modes of use I am more ready to
appreciate gmone, and I use it more now than I used to.

I have a installed a few machines for a local charity - with edubuntu
- (gnome) - and the users have not had any difficulty at all.

However, I will personally have to work harder to manage them because
I have always preferred a non cl approach. It is not the end of the
world though.

I note with special interest that a number of apparently most popular
distros are kde based. Suse used to be kde by default, with an easy
choice of gnome, there is now pclinuxos, mepis, and maybe others. This
is not much of an analysis, but my impression is that kubuntu takes
the user a little further away from the command line at least
initially, than ubuntu does.
I still suggest kubuntu to real newcomers who will have no LUG support
or seem as if they will shun cl, for that reason.

Nice one mate - let me know how you get on with it.

How do you deal with things like statements that roll over onto multiple
pages? Or put another way, do you scan each individual page, save it, and
move onto the next one without attempting to link the two images together
either by filename or other method, or are you relying on the text document
to provide the linkage?

[ubuntu-uk] Position for Ubuntu-Uk Contact

2007-09-16 Thread David Morley
It pays no money you get little thanks but it is important. If you
feel you could step into Nik's shoes and basically pass info from mail
onto the group then sign up now for this amazing position.

Seriously People. If you are a regular on the irc channel then now is
the time to step forward and make yourself known. This job involves
getting info in form of emails etc and passing the info on to the
group (Ubuntu-Uk) to be voted on and discussed. You are basically
just a contact point for anyone and everyone.

So Bravely step forward and volunteer for this most prominent role and
enjoy the adulation you receive.

Hi Dave,

I would like to volunteer for the role. I have been looking for
opportunities to get more involved in the Ubuntu world and feel this
could be a great step forward. I have represented Ubuntu at a few events
this year and actively promote it to all persons I come into contact with.

My organisational and communication skills are excellent, stemming from
my experience running societies in University, managing my own video
projects and my current work as an Analyst / Developer / Deployer. I am
currently on an experience year working for LogicaCMG as part of my
studies (Computer Science at Manchester), therefore I have both the time
and inclination for this role. I am an active member on the mailing list
(especially the leaflets) and often make an appearance in the IRC room.

For a personal reference I would refer you to the previous volunteer
LoudMouthMan as we were fortunate enough to meet at PodCamp UK this
year, and to Alan Cox who I helped run a stall on Software Freedom Day
this year. As I am based in Central London I can also easily travel to
any events necessary for Ubuntu communication.

Thank you for considering me for the role, and I feel I should end on a
joke. What's orange and sounds like a parrot? A carrot!

Best Regards,

Matthew Larsen

Greetings David!

I've not been involved in the appointment of an individual to a
position within a loco group before, so I'm a little unsure about how
this works.

I wondered perhaps if it'd take the place of a poll where people could
register their interest, and where other members of the group could
then vote for their preference.

Personally, given my (short) experience of the individuals within the
team, I would like to register my own vote for Alan Pope as loco
contact. That is of course if Alan decides he'd like to do the job.

Should this be the preferred method of appointment, I'd quite happily
make a wiki page to allow members votes to be recorded.

2007-09-16 Thread Onilton Maciel
@Chicó:

screenlets, apoiado pelo pessoal do compiz, parece estar a todo
vapor.

[]s

ps: Tenho o driver comercial configurado no meu laptop 100% funcional.

[Ubuntu-be] status update: fairs, release parties, posters, meeting

2007-09-16 Thread Mark Van den Borre
Hi all,

(A previous attempt to send the following message mysteriously failed
a few days ago...)

A short update on upcoming ubuntu-be.org activities.
* computer fairs
* gutsy release parties: Hasselt, Brussels, Liège(?), Roeselare(?)
* posters
* meeting

COMPUTER FAIRS
===
Ubuntu-be.org fair booths until christmas. If you want to volunteer, please
contact the people responsible thorugh this list and/or directly:
* Antwerpen, 2007/09/09, sporthal Schijnpoort, Pieter Verledens,
Stijn, logistics: Mark Van den Borre
* Gent, 2007/09/16, ICC, Dieter Vanderfaeillie, (logistics: Mark Van den Bor=
re)
* Charleroi, 30 september 2007 Palais des Expo, Cedric Janssens
* Kortrijk, 14 oktober 2007 Bouwcentrum Pottelberg, Jan Claeys
* Luik, 21 oktober 2007 Halles des Foires, Alexandre Laurent? (to be
confirmed)
* Oostende, 28 oktober 2007 Media Center, Jan Claeys
* Antwerpen, 11 november 2007 Sporthal Schijnpoort, candidate with
car needed)
* Gent, 25 november 2007 Flanders Expo, Dieter Vanderfaeillie
* Genk, 2 december 2007 Limburghal, Bart Broeckx? (to be confirmed)
* Mechelen, 9 december 2007 Nekkerhal, you? please contact mark
* Namur, 16 december 2007 Namur Expo, contact Cedric Janssens

GUTSY RELEASE PARTIES
==
Two seem to be well on their way (Hasselt Brussels), with two other
ones in the pipeline (Liège Roeselare). See also:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ReleaseParty

PROMO MATERIALS
===
I am trying to find a 500 to 1000 € printing shipping budget for
promo materials. Polyvalent posters in particular could be put to very good use.

Some potential uses:
* promotion of ubuntu-be.org activities
* at ubuntu-be.org activities
* school and other non-profit requests: We regularly receive requests
for promo materials, and up until now we have had to disappoint them.

Sponsorship offers welcome. Please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

EVENT BOXES
=
Do you know of laptops with at least 256 Mb ram laying around
somewhere unused? Ubuntu-be.org could put them to _really_ good use
for local event boxes. Laptops make event boxes portable. A huge
advantage, as many volunteers have no car at their disposal.

Our budget for this is non-existent, but our cause is noble...

See also:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/Eventbox

MEETING
=
We need a meeting soon. Stay tuned for more news on this one.

Sincerely,

Mark Van den Borre
ubuntu-be.org volunteer coordinator

Plantage d'install double boot

2007-09-16 Thread Jean Peyratout
Bonjour,

Table de partition habituelle:
 | Win | / | /home | swap |

http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=148089

[Bug 139886] nautilus and another programs didn`t show attached disks

2007-09-16 Thread Evgeny Burzak
Public bug reported:

After 2-3 days of work without rebooting some GTK programs (like nautilus,
gedit etc.) paused about 1 min before shown windows and when started, didn`t
shown attached devices (flash disk, ntfs partition). There is only one solution
is rebooting, even switching between init levels didn`t help (telinit 1 then
telinit 2)... It is very annoying.
In strace output I find poll function which executed twice and wait 25 sec:
17016 poll([{fd=16, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000) = 0 24.999491

After some time (maybe 10 min) flash disk turn up in nautilus, all GTK
programs begin start without pause, but not ntfs disk in list (it is
mounted as before). Maybe it is FUSE or DBUS bug?

2007-09-16 Thread theo w
Wow finally got this working for my Asus F9s.

After all the different hacks - reverting to the current Alsa driver.
1.0.14-1ubuntu1
and editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and adding the line:

options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo

at the end of the file

Reboot and sound is working. Also make sure the headphone option is
checked in your mixer. And PCM and Front is all the way up and unmuted.

[Bug 139887] Volume up keyboard hotkey unmutes channel, while volume down doesn't

2007-09-16 Thread Manan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In the Gnome Sound Preferences dialog box, one can choose which audio
channel will be controlled by the keyboard volume control hotkeys. I've
noticed a peculiar behaviour with my notebook's sound card (Intel HDA).
I'm controlling the 'front' channel with the hotkeys. Normally, when I
plug in the headphones, the front channel gets automatically muted. With
the front channel muted, no sound comes through the system speakers, but
the volume level still controls the audio volume of the headphones.
Manually unmuting the front channel while the headphone is connected
enables audio output from both the headphones and speakers (which I
would not want in normal circumstances).

The problem I'm seeing is that when I'm using the hotkeys to control the front
channel:
1. Pressing the volume down key reduces the volume while keeping the muted
channel muted.
2. Pressing the volume up key raises the volume, but also unmutes the channel
if it is muted.

So, if I'm listening via the headphones, I can safely reduce the volume
from the keyboard, but if I try to increase the volume, audio starts
playing from both the headphones and speakers! I have to mute the front
channel manually then to keep the sound playing through the headphones
only. I don't understand why the behaviour of the volume up and down
keys is asymmetric... the volume up key should also simply adjust the
volume level, and not disable the mute flag.

** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that

I moved the bad file and everything sorted itself out. I ran a file
