[Bug 173973] Re: NetworkManager restarted on Ubuntu update - connections and transfers are lost

2007-12-06 Thread dkohen
I have a connected problem: the upgrade is not managing to pass the
network manager. I have to shutdown entirely to free it up (no access to
terminals etc). This happened once with the upgrade on the 4th December
and has just happened again with an entirely unconnected upgrade - I
guess that the first one didn't finish and that every future update will
cause the same problem. i'll try and shutdown the manager and let it
complete the upgrade, but...

[Bug 117170] Re: /dev/wacom should be /dev/input/wacom in xorg.conf for USB tablets by default

2007-12-06 Thread Loïc Martin
Matthijs, your problem seem to be that your xorg.conf was generated by a
version prior to Feisty final or Gutsy (your tablet won't work by
default in Gutsy, but that's another bug ;) ).

I'm closing this bug now since Feisty and Gutsy definitely have
xorg.conf pointing to /dev/input/wacom.

Thanks

P.S. : I'm not an Ubuntu developer and in no way responsible for the
mess in Gutsy, just sorting out old bugs.

[Bug 149849] Re: OpenOffice Writer can not convert some .docx files to .odt

2007-12-06 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
It is nice if it works. But I agree with the priority actually.

Some docx files will never be fully supported. For example because they
require patented microsoft technology. That is: even if we were able to
support it, it wouldn't be legal.

Also, the case with activeX .. supporting those in docx would require wine.
Full blown windows emulation.
Please tell those who supply docx files to use a more universal format: PDF/ODF
.. or even a normal .DOC

Same for HP OfficeJet 6310.

It printed OK with Feisty and HPLIP driver, but now it's failing to
print with Gutsy. It simply loads and ejects the empty page sheet.

Other functions as scan or flashcard access keeps working.

[Bug 174379] kcmnvview not shown in the KControl but rather in the KInfoCenter

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kcmnvview

The mentioned package description says:

It should instead say:

KInfo Center Module for NVIDIA graphic cards
This KInfo Center Module can display various information about NVIDIA graphic

I know it has those entries commented out - that's exactly the problem,
since Ubuntu users won't know why their tablet doesn't work any more.

However, it would be nice if Hardy solves the bug. However, will a fix/backport
be available so the regression is fixed in Gutsy too?
Thanks

[Bug 165093] Re: [nvidia-glx-new] Xorg crashes with /usr/bin/X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x1e1)

2007-12-06 Thread Abhinay Mukunthan
I believe Xorg is at fault. I've had it happen to me other than times
that I use Yakuake, but that's the easiest way to reproduce it. Whatever
it is, I'm quite sure Nvidia isn't at fault, since it happens to me with
an ATI card, and as seen on the other bug report, it happened to someone
with an Intel card too.

Btw... you can probably mark the bug as confirmed as well :)

Its interesting that Yakuake doesn't seem to cause you issues. People on
this thread have similar issues, and one of them (other than me :))
mentions Yakuake as well...

[Bug 164449] Re: undefined symbols in mptspi driver

2007-12-06 Thread Martin Pitt
This is hard to test at least for me (I only have vmware for testing the
driver). When I install the current -proposed l-b-m in an existing
dapper (with scsi disks), mpt works fine. It just seems to bail out in
the installer.

So I'm afraid we actually have to upload this to -proposed, build d-i
against it, and build new CDs for testing it in the installer. Or do you
know another method?

[Bug 71913] New Bug Report

2007-12-06 Thread Abhinay Mukunthan
Hello everyone,

A lot of you have reported a backtrace containing the following error, or
something similar.
/usr/bin/X(CompositeGlyphs+0x9a) [0x816129a]

Diego Gaustein has opened a new bug report to collate the occurrences of
any error involving CompositeGlyphs. So far, we have a confirmed
report from Diego himself(using an nVidia card) and myself(using an
ATi). It would be helpful if the others who are experiencing this bug,
could migrate to the other thread, so that we can figure out which
package the error lies in :) It would also hopefully bring the bug in
this thread to a conclusion.

The aforementioned bug report is here:

[Bug 149849] Re: OpenOffice Writer can not convert some .docx files to .odt

2007-12-06 Thread dominik
This bug is about saving what you can see on screen as .odt (not as
.doc), this bug is not about parsing or reading a .docx file.

I guess two possible failures: openoffice get an invalid state after
reading this .docx file, or openoffice get an invalid state while
writing an .odt file. This is the reason for reporting this bug, not
cause I expect a perfect import of a .docx file.

[Bug 140668] Re: [gutsy] Bluetooth devices doesn't awake after sleeping

2007-12-06 Thread bubbalouie
Fix Possibly Found:

Add the bluetooth module to you ACPI white list.

Open the following file in your preferred editor as root (I used nano
for quickness, also, I recommend making a copy just in case there is a
mistake):

/etc/default/acpi-support

You will find the following line:

# Add modules to this list to leave them in the kernel over suspend/resume
MODULES_WHITELIST=

Change it to:

# Add modules to this list to leave them in the kernel over suspend/resume
MODULES_WHITELIST=bluetooth

This appears to have fixed things on both the FE-25GP and FE-35GP
laptops I have had the issue with. However, it may create some issues
with your suspend/resume functions.

[Bug 164598] Re: Upgraded to 7.10 and sound has disappeared

2007-12-06 Thread Gobbie
IT WORKED!!!

Excellent! I've got no idea what the module is or how I would ever have
found it but the problem is fixed. Hopefully these things will be
ironed out in Ubuntu and possibly automated a bit more. Yes, I've come
from a windows background where I could have fixed this in minutes
without having to find any long-named modules. I've seen comments like
'If you want an OS that runs like Windows, get Windows' but they are
really unhelpful. Let's face it Linux/Ubuntu have to convert the
Windows community which means making some of these things easier but
without all the rubbish of Windows. I have no idea how to use the
terminals or what a kernel is, and frankly, it's not what I want to know
either. I'd like to see Ubuntu's phrase just works become a reality.
It's an excellent OS that has to appeal to the general public.

Thanks for all the assistancewe've got music again!

[Bug 138343] Re: evince consumes a lot of memory (1.5 GB VM)

2007-12-06 Thread LuitvD
I have the same on my machine. I was puzzled by the excessive use of swap on my
laptop (amd64 with 800MB RAM) so I disabled swap and waited for something to
fail. It happened when I was scrolling through an ADC0804 datasheet (simple
chip datasheet with quite an amount of images). It suddenly failed to move my
mouse easily, and shortly after Evince disappeared, and took OpenOffice Writer
down with it.
A next try with swap turned back on showed that Evince was using 500 MiB of
memory (not VM, just regular memory space) which made my laptop dump half of
it's system memory to swap, making it slow and unresponsive.

[Bug 174395] Quake3 not installed properly

OK, someone wants to build a real Quake3 package for Ubuntu. But there

At the moment there is a installer from ID on a lazy server and you need
the CD with the 400MB data. Both is used by the buggy Ubuntu package
quake3-data. The installation did not finish after downloading the

[Bug 174392] [gutsy installer] invalid paths in menu.lst

2007-12-06 Thread Reinmar
Public bug reported:

I have two disks:
/dev/sda (1 and 2 - both ntfs with winxp)
/dev/sdb:
* 1 - /boot
* 2 - /
* 3 - swap
* 4-8 rest

I installed Ubuntu, everything was working fine, but when I'd chosen
Ubuntu(..) in Grub it crashed with error (I'm not sure now) 15 - no such a
path.
It was caused by bad kernel and initrd paths in menu.lst which was:
root(hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic (...)
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic

And should be in my case:
root(hd1,1)
kernel (hd1,0)/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic (...)
initrd (hd1,0)/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic

[Bug 174397] SWScanner is crashing on Ubuntu 7.10

2007-12-06 Thread Xoli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: swscanner

As you may know SWScanner is crashing on Ubuntu 7.10, but apparently the
software author has solved the problem in SVN.
It would be kindly if you update the package.

Following it goes the text from the author's website:

I don't know the cause yet, but I know it's not kernel version dependent. There
are two different people reporting me the same crash, but I'm still waiting to
someone sending me the backtrace of the crash to be able to check what's
happening.

I hope It'll be corrected soon.

Update 20070708:
This issue is fixed now. The SVN is updated so you can check it out whenever

[Bug 174301] Re: desktop-file-utils has too many dependent packages

2007-12-06 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug. That's not a desktop-file-utils bug and I don't
think that changing those Depends would be correct. If you need to ship
your own version of defaults.list you can bring the topic on the ubuntu-
devel mailing list or ship your version in a package using dpkg-divert

[Bug 102678] Re: xscreensaver version is ancient

2007-12-06 Thread Tormod Volden
The Debian packaging is in a bad shape. I will try to help fix up the
Debian package, and after that a new Ubuntu merge would be needed.
Meanwhile, feel free to merge the current state of affairs :)

[Bug 160234] Re: Nautilus can not be used right now error keeps happening

2007-12-06 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thanks for your report, is this still an issue? Is that reproducible
with another new user? May you tell us a few steps to reproduce the bug?

[Bug 174400] firefox-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in __kernel_vsyscall()

2007-12-06 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 149519 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/149519

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

This happened during an update (though Firefox wasn't updated in that
batch).

FF was open for a long time, though only three tabs were open at the
time. It just froze at one moment, I'm pretty sure it wasn't loading
anything. I was just reading one of the tabs. I took a look, the update
in progress at the moment it froze was:

Setting up fontconfig (2.5.0-2ubuntu1) ...

I think I've seen crashes like this (during fontconfig updates) happen
before, though I can't be sure that's what caused it. I also noticed
that during the updates the font used to render the details part of
Update Manager's progress window changed, so I suspect something funny
happened at that point.

[Bug 172452] Re: Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio

2007-12-06 Thread Daniel T Chen
If you've killed the pulseaudio daemon prior to invoking firefox to use
youtube, then how is pulseaudio to blame for filling up memory while
firefox is in use?
