Re: [Ubuntu-be] Planet Ubuntu-be ?

2008-11-13 Thread Cedric Janssens
Indeed, Planet is easy to configure...

http://www.pingouin-barbu.info/planet/

This is my first test... on the same server as ubuntu-be.org

So, we'll need either three (four ?) planets, either a trilingual
(fourlingual) planet

Personnaly, the two choice seems cool.

But, I propose to open a page on the wiki and put the RSS links you want to
see on the planet(s) ?

This is still a test.

After this test, we'll see if we'll integrate it or not.

For the feeds, the syntax is

[http://url of the rss feed]
name = name of the feeder
face = if you want to put a picture (hackergoshi) of the feeder
facewidth = width of the pic
faceheight = height of the pic

I will centralize them in a config on the server and cron it 6 times a day.

Regards
Cedric

Hi to all,

During Dipro event in Bredene on 2th Nov I realised the need for a
dynamic presentation of Ubuntu.

I have a limited experience with Ubuntu and Ubuntu.be.
Nevertheless I am currently working on a slideshow based on the
work of
Rafik Ouerchefani and Daniel Holbach : for the use by Ubuntu.be, with
more dynamic/animation, first in french and later in dutch.

With such a challenge I can't tell when it will be done !

First I need suggestions for a music-background during the slideshow :
what is the best appropriate ?
Later this month I will need some help to control my my product (in
french and later in dutch) : volunteers ?

No, you don't need this to run planetplanet. ( I maintain
http://planet.geekdinner.be/ )

planetplanet is just some python script you have to run from cron, to generate
the aggregated page (http://planet.geekdinner.be/index.html), which is just
plain html, nothing more. You don't need fancy modules for your httpd.

AFAIK, any default ubuntu server install will have the python binary you need
for this.

This is very simple to set up, the only thing you might want is a customized
css to have the looks of the site.

Going the drupal mod way is of course a good way to integrate with the site,
but such a thing is mostly overkill, I think. Except maybe if maintaining the
planet subscriptions can be managed from within everyone's user account?

I could provide hosting with Python and install planet but it would take
some time before i can do the setup (i'm quite busy atm).

@Pierre Buyle : do you really need it integrated in Drupal (because you can
add feeds to Drupal)? A Planet is just a aggregation of feeds, so imho there
is no need to log in or something.
You can put a link on the front page to the planet page.

like i said before, this is just my opinion

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Planet Ubuntu-be ?

2008-11-13 Thread Cedric Janssens
Indeed, Python is not installed on the server.
I'm not planning to install it for the same reason as Pierre said : I don't
have enough knowledge to administrate it.

Cédric

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Planet Ubuntu-be ?

2008-11-13 Thread Pierre Buyle
planetplanet is a Python application. I'm not sure that our current web
server support Python. It can surely be installed on the server. Or hosted
somewhere else. But I will no do it. Nor will I supervise it. I don't know
enough Python for that. And I don't have the time to learn it. But if
somebody else want to do it. Don't be shy. Go ahead. Just do it.

Also, planetplanet means zero integration with the Drupal site. So no single
signon for administrators or planet members. A separate theme (and more work
if we want to make the two look the same). Planet content not searchable
through the website build-in search. etc

Anyway, I'm not asking what software I should use. I'm asking what are the
expected features. So I can actually do something that will meet some needs.
I trust myself to choice the right tool for the job, the one that suits me.
I just want to be sure I do the right job. But again, if somebody think
he/she knows exactly what to do and how to do it and if he/she want to do
it, I would be happy to switch to another task and let he/she do the job.

[Ubuntu-be] Presentation ideas

2008-11-13 Thread Glenn South
Marc B made a very good comment.

QUOTE: As people on such events tend to move around, you don't need a
very large nr
of slides either, just a few very powerful ones that catch the attention
of
people passing by.
If they than come for a closer look, you can then ask them what exactly
they
are interested in and show this on a second PC. UNQUOTE

WHAT SELLS NEWSPAPERS on the straats of NEW YORK, Chicago, etc. THE
HEADLINES. nothing more. Get the attention, general rule of sales. a
person has a 30 second mind capture to figure it out. Curiosity kills
the cat. You buy, you read, do the crossword? Sudoku? throw it away.

"BATMAN TAKES GOTHAM" What sold comics when I was a kid, Galactus,
Silver Surfer, think about what Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Dicktus did
back in those days, oopsa most of you aint that old to stand in the cold
to see a stack of magazines thrown on the street on donderdag afternoon
to wait for the next issue after you were up at four in the morning
getting your wagon filled. yep a western auto (retailer)wagon that your
dad help you get ready for.

Same theory. All the kids are so excited down here. Ubuntu, Warcraft,
Crossover, its coming guys. Just be patient help me get this going down
here. The only thing that has held Ubuntu back was the gaming. Nothing
more nothing less.

And a good one, imho.

planetplanet is easy to set up. Just need some fancy custom css to make it
pretty.

Isn't it possible to create planet.ubuntu-be.org and use planet (
http://www.planetplanet.org/)?

Just an idea..
