[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty
*Grar*. The conservative regulator only saves power on really ancient hardware. On current hardware it *loses* you battery life. Good to know, Mr. Jenkins. I suppose this information ought to be widely proliferated, as many Linux kernel manuals (as Google readily shows), published as recently as this year, still say that Conservative is better for all battery devices, and makes no distinction between old and new hardware. At any rate, it was just an experiment, since I'd guess the main issue for most is the excessive heat. At least, most people I've talked to with this problem thought that was the most immediately noticeable change on their laptops, and discovered the decreased battery life and found out about the increased power consumption regression later. Believe it or not, Linux distributions aren't _quite_ so incompetent as to leave massive battery life/heat wins on the table for years, by not bothering to simply set an existing configuration option when running on a laptop. As far I understand what's been going on here, people are just trying to discover short-term treatments, not a cure, so to speak, while they patiently wait for a true fix from the Kernel Team. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760131 Title: Power consumption raised significantly in natty To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/760131/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 527458] Re: please include status messages/tooltips
Sorry for getting off-topic. I just cannot stay calm reading everywhere that Ubuntu gets ruined. Me too, I liked it out-of-the-box from Breezy to Jaunty. Hope this helps to keep skilled people from leaving Ubuntu. sudo apt-get install gdebi synaptic gtkperf ttf-droid sudo apt-get remove unity-common ubuntuone-client overlay-scrollbar sudo sh -c echo /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99disable-overlay-scrollbars 'export LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0' gconftool-2 --set --type string /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager gnome-wm cat EOF ~/.gtkrc-2.0 style default-style { GtkWindow::resize-grip-height = 0 GtkWindow::resize-grip-width = 0 } class GtkWidget style default-style EOF And note that Gnome theme Dust Sand with font Droid is about 50% faster than Nattys default (according to gtkperf). Re: [Bug 582809] Re: Synaptics Clickpad touchpad buttons are not working
2finger tap or corner tap only works for right click, and is useful to the point that you never miss right button again (I've used 2 finger tap for years in a macbook laptop) For click+drag, I've found only two usable solutions: 1.- modprobe psmouse proto=exps; (thanks @sauthess !). With this protocol touchpad has the expected behaviour in left and right click, but no more features, as multifinger detection, so forget 2finger and even right area scroll. Of course you can rmmod psmouse; modprobe psmouse; again to change the protocol, but having to change the module whenever you want to do click+drag or scroll seems not confortable for daily usage. 2.- Universal solution: I've put some layers of paper adhesive sticks (these typical circular sticks) covering a small area in the left corner of the pad (You have to put some layers in order the clickpad doesnt detect your finger) and you can click in this area and move the other finger. Using a pen to do the click also works. On 12/06/11 21:09, Reinhard wrote: To all, who would like to use drag and drop, have a look at comment #171. I have no LED and I can't use my right mouse-button. Instead I configured 2-finger tap or corner-taps to simulate a right mouse-button click. [Bug 739233] Re: Impress freezes the computer when printing slides with embedded spreadsheets
I've filled a bug upstream against Okular, it got assigned somehow to openoffice here, and I'm unable to reassign it to Okular. When trying to print in Libreoffice to file, symptoms are simmilar to the ones when printing directly to the printer. Libreoffice crashes and the file is not generated. Also, soffice.bin is the most cpu intensive process, however xorg cpu ussage also increases, but i don't know if it's directly related. Also, kswapd0 shows up, although its cpu ussage isn't that big. During the proces system also became unresponsive and the hdd went crazy. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/739233 Title: Impress freezes the computer when printing slides with embedded spreadsheets To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/openoffice/+bug/739233/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 571476] Re: Trim support missing from Linux kernel
@Josh Brown: I really appreciate that you're trying to answer my questions, and thanks for your suggestion. I'm not sure if a question there would produce any answers, though ;-) From the the page at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds?action=showredirect=KernelMainlineBuilds: 1) The mainline kernels builds are produced for debugging purposes and therefore come with no support. Use them at your own risk. 2) By definition the mainline kernel builds are made from virgin unaltered mainline kernel sources and therefore do not, and should not, include any Ubuntu patches or drivers. There are also no binary drivers for these kernels. 3) The v2.6.32.x/v2.6.33.y combined tree appears to be missing. So my conclusion from the info on this page: yes, a Ubuntu kernel config, but no support and no Ubuntu specific patches in these custom kernels. And thus also no reason to run them on an LTS system. I'm also fully aware of the fact that LTS versions are made for environments that require more stability. That's why I am developing for LTS and not for other versions. By the way: a lot of business users have SSD enabled laptops by now. If their company (as it should) requires an LTS version to be installed, Canonical is creating a problem here. For now I've installed 11.04 on my SSD enabled demo (as in 10.04 demo) laptop to check the 10.04 filesystem once-in-a-while. I feel this is a crappy solution (as in: install Debian testing to make Debian Stable stable). I've read that ext4 TRIM is supported from 2.6.33 and xfs TRIM is supported from 2.6.39 (!!!). So I had to revert from using my favorite filesystem on my demo laptop. Grmpf. I just would like Canonical to take a stand here (or elsewhere) and be clear and transparent about LTS on SSD. Right now it's left to developers what is supported and what is not. I've not found any remarks on stability anywhere, apart from what I've mentioned before. Maybe you (or anyone) have a link to a developer thread where this is dicussed ? I spent some time to find one, couldn't find any. Maybe I'm totally wrong, and there is a simple (and stable) solution out of this situation. The root cause of this bug is the final removal of BKL from the Linux kernel: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.36.y.git;a=commitdiff;h=b19dd42faf413b4705d4adb38521e82d73fa4249 The change first appeared in kernel 2.6.36 and possibly later versions of ubuntu kernel 2.6.35. NVIDIA have implemented a fix in their later driver versions: Users of nvidia-96 need version 96.43.19 or later. Users of nvidia-current need version 260.19.06 or later. 260.19.06 really does seem to be the earliest instance of the fix I can find for nvidia-current. [Bug 796465] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV
** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon This crash in gnome-settings-daemon 3.0.2-1ubuntu3 occurred twice (nearly identical, not very informative stack traces) in succession after logging in to a recently updated unity-2d session on an Oneiric i386 system. I think this crash may have occurred before the updates (if so, I don't think I reported it then). My other Oneiric i386 system, installed on identical (virtual) hardware and also fully updated, does not appear to be affected by this bug. This might be bug 788710. I was able to produce that bug on this same system, by running gnome-settings-daemon in a Terminal after the two instances of this crash. (I'll post in that bug with more details about the possible connection.) But I suspect they are not really the same bug, because they both occurred in the same session without any package management operations performed in between them, yet the stack trace in this bug is much worse. - This also looks a bit like bug 779878. I haven't yet compared the stack - traces. + This bug looks cursorily similar to bug 779878, since they are both + SIGSEGV crashes in gnome-settings-daemon with no function name (and thus + have the same apport-generated title). Since bug 779878's stack trace + has no symbol names or addresses and this stack trace has only the + address where the segfault occurred and no other information, they + cannot really be compared. Since there are no positive similarities + besides occurring spontaneously (other than that, all the similarities + between the two bugs are in the information that is *not* available + about them), and bug 779878 occurred in Maverick while this bug occurred + in Oneiric, I doubt they are the same bug. + + Due to stack corruption, the stack trace here is very bad--hopefully + Apport retracing service will be able to process it and the core dump, + and yield better information. [Bug 787622] Re: Can't connect to WLAN with eeePC 901
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected natty running-unity staging ** Description changed: Version is 11.04 Desktop. The hot-key for the WLAN works fine, the adapter is enabled and disabled. When enabled, the adapter detects wireless networks and identifies the security in use (WEP/WPA etc.). After the key is entered the system seems to attempt to connect to the WLAN, but then the GUI just freezes and it seems that the whole computer has crashed (system stops responding to pings). Holding the power button down until the system powers-off is the only way to get the system back. This is also the case for connecting to an unsecured WLAN or if an invalid PSK is entered.
