No problem. I'm *very* excited to see this get added.

Some of the verbosity was my idea, just to make sure that people
understood this was specifically a check of the packaging branch
against the published package, and so they wouldn't confuse this with
a message about the wt being out of date. I agree putting the numbers
at the start would be easier to scan, and your other form would also
 work pretty well.

Cool. I know this is easily bikeshedded, so I trust y'all to come up with
 nice output.

Well, honestly, I trust your opinion more than mine. Mostly because it
is something that you actively use. I do a lot of programming, but I
don't do a lot of packaging day-to-day.

I wonder if we should give a url or some kind of advice on what to do
in the case it is out of date.

That's an excellent idea. I'd love to have some pages on mitigation
strategies, probably in the wiki to foster quicker turn around and wider
participation. Now that it's been condensed, a subpage under

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DistributedDevelopment

would be perfect I think. I can create the subpage if you want, but I'd love
to have the bzr team help fill in the content.

FWIW, what I generally do is to use `bzr import-dsc` to get a branch I can
hack on. It doesn't fix the import problems, but it generally allows me to
get unblocked for the immediate task.

So that is import a new revision with just the latest tip, ignoring all
the history ?

 1) First create a file under the name '12d1\:1505' inside

 2) Copy this inside the file and save:

  DefaultVendor= 0x12d1
 DefaultProduct=0x1505

 TargetVendor=  0x12d1

 MessageContent=55534243123456780011062001

 3) Then type 'sudo usb_modeswitch -I -W -c 12d1:1505' each time you connect

(titres, support HD, transitions, etc.)

code

Try booting with an older kernel.
Have a search round launchpad to see if others have had the same problem.
If using a proprietary driver try the open one or try updating or reinstalling

More information would be useful. What machine, graphics card, driver,

Try booting with an older kernel.
Have a search round launchpad to see if others have had the same problem.
If using a proprietary driver try the open one or try updating or
 reinstalling it.

I thought this may be of interest to some one here or maybe someone

I am not associated with this, I just did a search for Linux and found it.

That might be the problem. On Ubuntu, /bin/sh is a symbolic link to
dash, which is mostly compatible with bash (and the original Bourne
shell sh), but has some slight differences.

You could try typing bash /media/runInstaller to see if that fixes the
error message. The error looks like you're hitting one of the syntax
incompatibilities.

Better link for Ubuntu Help on the startpage.

2011-07-19 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
I just read an interesting blog post about a sixty year old who used a
computer for the first time.
He tried to get started, but couldn't find a way to easily get help.
To me, it was fairly obvious that a clearly visible link to a help
page on the start page would've been very helpful to him. So I had a
look, and sure enough, we have one.

But that link points to https://help.ubuntu.com/. That means that the
user needs to first choose his version. He might not know that.
However, we do, so we should link directly to the version the user has
installed and directly to desktop, so the link should have pointed to
https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-help/index.html in 11.04.

That page has a small notice at the bottom: «This help applies if you
are using the default Unity desktop. Help is also available for the
Ubuntu Classic desktop session.» We know what shell the user uses. The
user might not. We should have a way to point the user in the right
direction at once.

In this particular case, the user was trying to use the web. First of
all, he needed help using the browser, but then he would need some
help understanding the web itself. I think that might have been a nice
thing to have. I had a look for that in the help site and I eventually
arrived at this page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-help/net-browser.html. It
explains how to Switch to another browser and how to install Java,
Silverlight and Flash. But it does not explain how to browse the web.
That seems to me a fairly obvious topic to have. That would've been
frustrating to Joe from the test.

In other words; there is room for improvement.

I realize that it's a bit too late to fix this in 11.04, but if we
could make this happen for 11.10 and all future versions, I think it
would be a usability improvement. It would also be very nice if that
page was translated into more languages and was used by default for
the users current language settings. Is anyone working on that?

Ubuntu has for years shipped with pre-installed localized help. With
Gnome 3 the desktop help was significantly improved but unfortunately
it was effectively hidden in Unity. The Ubuntu Documentation Team
asked for a button on the dash or in the launcher but it was too late
for Ubuntu 11.04.

See this bug which has been mostly ignored: https://pad.lv/778289

The bottom half of the Dash frontpage is not very useful. We have a
button for the default web browser despite the web browser having a
default link on the launcher. Most web users have the browser open
most of the time anyway so a button there isn't needed. I think the
Dash should ship with Help System Settings in that prime space.
Perhaps the other two spots could be reserved for the two most
frequently used programs that are not already pinned to the launcher.

Re: ubuntu-au Digest, Vol 65, Issue 11

2011-07-19 Thread Anthony
Hi David,

If the computer is a laptop, sometimes there is a small switch on the
side you have to flick on for the wireless to power up,

Otherwise it might be a key combo you have to hit like Fn + F4 or
something to power up the wireless (look for the wireless symbol on the
F keys at the top)

If it is the wired connection that's not working goto terminal and type
in lspci | grep Ethernet and look for the model number of the network card

This will correlate to a module that has to be manually loaded that
Ubuntu forgot to load for your network card..

For example it might be you need rt8139.ko for your model you'd then
type into terminal modprobe rt8139 and if this worked and is the
correct driver your network device would kick in
if you have it connected to a wired modem connection you'd see it connect.

When you do find that driver that makes it work you need to make it
start every time the computer starts so type in sudo nano /etc/modules
and you'd add the driver to the bottom rt8139 (without the commas of
course).

If you're still stuck copy and paste the output of lspci | grep
Ethernet to this mail list and we'll sus out your driver for you ;)

Good luck!

Octatron

 Hello All

I have a problem when installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a Friends Laptop.

I have already installed 10.04 with no trouble on my desk top and lap top.

In a terminal ifconfig eth0 shows 'eth0' to be present on both my
machines but absent on the Friends laptop (there is also no eth1 etc).

The Friends laptop connects to the Internet OK on Windows 7 but because
of the absence of 'eth0' fails to connect with Ubuntu.

Can anybody tell me how to fix this ?

 Thanks in advance

=== Blueprints: Oneiric Delta Review ===
apw, lag, ralveti: you have work items to review your set of Ubuntu patches. I've pushed these out to Alpha-3 for you. Please take a moment to review when you have a chance. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/Specs/KernelOneiricUbuntuDeltaReview for
your specific set of patches. Note, these are the only remaining work items for this blueprint.

=== Blueprints: Oneiric Server Requirements ===
No change here. As the remains items are pretty much depending on outcome of
something else and either fall off completely or get pushed out as we go, I am
not sure it really needs to be on the agenda anymore. Would people mind
dropping it?

This will be dropped from the weekly agenda.

=== Status: General Oneiric  ===
Nothing very exciting this past week. I plan to do an upload today or tomorrow to get patches on master-next released. Alpha-3 is Thurs Aug 4th. I intend to upload our final Alpha-3 kernel next Friday July 29th. If there are any patches that need to
land for Alpha-3, get them sent to the kt-ml asap.

mass tagging of some bug reports

2011-07-19 Thread Brian Murray
I'm planning on tagging about 5000 bug reports with attachments named
'VarLogDistupgradeApttermlog.gz' with the tag 'dist-upgrade'.

These bug reports have been reported by apport and are package
installation failures but are currently indistinguishable (well other
than checking the attachments) from regular package installation
failures as they are all tagged 'apport-package'.

Having the tag will allow us to search using Launchpad for package
installation failures that have occurred when performing a distribution
upgrade. This will be useful when cleaning up existing apport-package
bug reports and when creating tests for package installation failures.

Barring any strenuous objections I plan on doing this on Friday, July
22nd so you might want filter bug mail from me with the body:

** Tags added: dist-upgrade

to somewhere special - but only for that day!

wacom fail

2011-07-19 Thread bart deruyter
Hi guys,

This is really starting to extremely annoy me. I had an ubuntu install,
11.04, on which I installed the ubuntustudio packages. First thing I
noticed, was that my wacom (intuous 3) buttons didn't work properly. When
pushing the buttons and using the scroll pad's the mouse arrow jumped to the
top left corner. After a couple of months tinkering, and experimenting I had
enough of it, downloaded and installed ubuntustudio 11.04.

Guess what.. it worked! One day I had full control over my wacom. Today...
it's back to earlier. Again the pointer jumps to the top left corner of my
screen when I use any of the buttons. What did I do? I noticed the
compositing didn't work, even when enabled in compiz settings, so I
installed an app for 2-d unity settings, in which the button to enable
compositing does work. I've disabled it again, but the problem remains.

What can I do to trace the problem, and more important, to fix it? I really
can use these buttons in Blender, Gimp, Inkscape...

greets,
Bart

Re: wacom fail

2011-07-19 Thread Ralf Mardorf

What can I do to trace the problem

If you are using Synaptic and or doing backups, than

- take a look at Synaptic's history. Was any Wacom related stuff
upgraded?
- compare Wacom related files with your last backup of the working
studio.

You can see Wacom related packages e.g. by using Synaptic's search.

Are you using a xorg.conf? Did you upgrade the kernel? What DE do you
use? I suspect GNOME2.

Jack-aware CD player ???

2011-07-19 Thread Lindsay Haisley
I'm using JACK and JACK patchbays to do some sound routing here. I'd
like to find a plain-jane CD player for Ubuntu that is JACK-aware and
presents a readable client to JACK. I couldn't find one in the standard
Ubuntu Natty distribution. Does anyone know of one? Everthing I've
tried so far outputs to PA, which goes into JACK, but is routed
differently.

Boa tarde João,

Instale o pacote compizconfig-settings-manager. Após a instalação, entre

nele.

[Ubuntu-BR] apt-get -f install [+duvida]

2011-07-19 Thread Welson de Avelar Soares Filho
Oi amigos, tudo bem?

instala pacotes assim manualmente. Mas apareceu que existem uns pacotes
quebrados e o apt-get vai precisar fazer downgrade de uns e pegar outros
novos.

quebrados e o apt-get vai precisar fazer downgrade de uns e pegar outros
 novos.

Toda vez que digito X [espaço] e pressiono tab o terminal me mostra as

Hey Maik,

sorry to hear you're leaving. Every bit of input you gave, was valued -
as it is from every member. So thanks for that.
I also appreciate you're not just disappearing into silence but actually
step down elegantly (as they say in Ubuntu land).

I'm wishing you all the best in your private life. Getting satisfaction
in life is possibly the ultimate freedom. :)

Oh yeah... just one little thing: you're not leaving Ubuntu... I'm
betting you'll still be using it. :)

Grtz,

2011-07-19 Thread karaluh
Are you using the same version of virt-manager to connect to both the
 fresh-lucid-install and jaunty-upgraded-to-lucid

Yes.

Can you tell us exactly what connection you are creating (presumably
ssh://, using which user?)

qemu+ssh, user is the same on both host, it's the user that is created
on install.

What does 'ls -l /dev/sr0' show on both hosts?

Upgraded:

Fresh:

[Bug 782092] Re: ssh server extremly unresponsive

2011-07-19 Thread Martin Konopka
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I describe the issue in few steps below.

1.) I want to transfer files from machine A (with ubuntu 11.04, but this
is not important) to machine B (ubuntu 10.10; this is important to say)
  using scp.

2.) Machine B is under constant computational load due to a user program
(a simulation) such that most of its CPU power is consumed by the
program but it uses less then half of total (12 GB) memory and there is
not any significant usage of disk and no other application is running.
(Even no user logged into a GNOME session.)

3.) I issue the command scp on machine A; I immediatelly get prompt to
give password. However the transfer does not start immediatelly after
that. I must wait for some time, say half a minute or even full minute
or more (I have not measured it.) just to see the start of the tranfer.

  Few additional remarks:

Until recently machine B had had installed ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx,
64-bit) and there was no such problem even at higher computational
loads. Similarly there was no such problem even in more distant past
when the machine was running under Linux Mint Helena (based upon Ubuntu
  9.10).

The long delays when doing scp occur if machine B was not exposed to an
scp or ssh demand for a longer period of time. (Typically I face the
problem in the morning when.) If an scp transfer is finally accomplished
then I can start a new one which already works without delay.

Machine B is equipped with an Intel i7 CPU, 12 GB of DDR3 and it is a
quite powerful workstation. All cores of CPU are set to run at maximum
  frequency.

I attach a file with content shown by the program top. (Grabbed in
situation when a user is logged into GNOME session.)

[Bug 782092] Re: ssh server extremly unresponsive

2011-07-19 Thread Martin Konopka
Next weeks I hopefully will acquire more information about the issue,
likely also by testing newest kernel. However, due to the nature of the
bug, it is possible to test it typically 1 time per day.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I think that this is probably a duplicate of bug 791944; but we need to
make sure first.

Please could you run the following commands in a terminal and post the
output to this bug report:

  ls -l /var/lib | grep samba
  ls -l /var/cache | grep samba
  sudo testparm

If running testparm generates warning messages its a duplicate; you
should be able to fix this issue by running:

  sudo chmod 0755 /var/lib/samba /var/cache/samba

Marking 'Incomplete' pending you response.

Thanks
