Hey all,

Just try avoiding the upgrading process to the newly released 11.10. The
main reason for this is

1) Filesystem Hierarchy standards change in the Debian family
2) Clash in the file organization.

Kindly go for a fresh install or wait for few weeks to get all the bugs
found and fixed (If you really want to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10)

I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 and haven't seen any weird behaviour
except I have a reduced battery life which is probably related to the
Kernel power regression bug getting aggravated.

But yeah, your mileage may vary with.

What is the need for a list? Every single project welcomes contributions.

But this is an impractical idea.(And a very bad one at that)

1) Students dumb enough to buy projects are obviously special, and we
shouldn't try to mess with natural selection and should allow them to find
their own way to extinction and we'd be doing humanity a great disservice if
we hinder their speedy path to Darwin Awards.

2) Most students in India, even engineering students are used to being
spoon-fed. So making a list of projects and asking them to contribute will
just not work. FOSS projects are meritocracies, so even if they land a
project, if the student isn't capable of contributing/can't finish his/her
contribution in time. They might still be left with no option to buy
projects to fulfill their college/university requirements. (Whereas most
local companies won't mind giving a letter(out of pity), stating that
they were happy with the student's work even if they were a total failure.)

3) Most open source projects are driven by volunteers who don't
have the time to hand-hold/train these students on how to work. And if we
start sending hundreds if not thousands of students to attack the maintainers
of these software asking for projects. The end result will be a gross
wastage of limited spare time that these contributors get.

4) Most colleges/universities are stuck in the dark ages and do not accept
open source contributions as a legitimate project, because they don't come
with letterheads and rubberstamps.(I know of GSoC participants who have been
forced to a second project to satisfy the whims of the dinosaurs that run our
education system)

So please don't go around telling every student you know to contribute to
opensource software as a college project.

Tell them to participate in opensource, but not just for the sake of the
college project.

The smart students are already participating in programs like GSoC/Fedora
Summer of Coding and others and are doing a good job matching up with some of
the smartest students in the world. So we just need to get more students to
compete for those slots.

And projects like GSoC/Fedora Summer of Coding have someone from the project
who willing to spare time to mentor the students. This is a huge benefit for
students. We should be encouraging the students to prepare for and
participate in such programs.

We need more programs like the Durgapur LUG's summer training program (
http://wiki.dgplug.org/index.php/SummerTraining ) which teach students how
things work in the opensource world, and prepares them to approach things the
right way. (For rather obvious reasons we don't want our gazillion students
spamming all the public lists and authors directly with sms-speak emails
HAI! I CAN HAZ PROEJCTZ???PLZ?? KTHXBYE.)

And more importantly we should be educating the staff/management of these
colleges to accept opensource contributions as legitimate projects.

-
TL;DR: If students are already buying projects. We should let them go their
merry way. It is too late to help them. If they want to contribute to FOSS
projects, they need to be told/taught how to do it the right way and they
should do it through existing programs like GSoC/FSoC without wasting the
limited/valuable time of the project maintainers/contributors.

[ubuntu-in] adding the same packages in a new installation

2011-10-16 Thread Moz
Hello All,

I am using Natty 64 bit on my computer. I would like to do a new install of
Oneiric 64 bit. I do not have good internet connection at home, so I have to
go elsewhere to download packages. I usually follow the following procedure
for a new installation:

1. save markings including the full state in synaptics from the existing
installation
2. install the new OS in a VMbox
3. in the new installation, open synaptics, read the markings from a saved
file, generate a download script.
4. go to a fast internet place, download all the packages and then bring
them back home, run dpkg to install the downloaded debs

When I tried this for Oneiric, there were 6 broken packages, when I tried to
remove them and move on, the packages are held (not removed) and synaptic
can not generate the download script or download the packages at all.

Is there some other way to do this?

Sincerely,

Moz

I am not getting the Ubuntu list anymore.

[ubuntu-uk] Touchpad problem ....

2011-10-16 Thread Barry Drake
Hi there anyone come across anything like this? I bought a Samsung
N145 Plus Netbook from the very helpful guy on e-bay I told you about.
I came pre-loaded with Ubuntu 11.04 and seemed fine until I installed a
couple of apps, after which the touchpad appeared to die. The guy I
bought it from was convinced it was going to be a software fauld and
although he would have accepted it back, I felt encouraged to look
deeper. He had sent me some helpful links, one of which was a page on
the Ubuntu Bug wiki giving detailed instructions for detailed diagnosis
and reporting.

Eventually, I popped the LiveCD of 10.04 in and the touchpad worked when
I booted this. I did a fresh install, and everything seemed fine. Then
I shut down and when I re-booted, the touchpad had disappeared again.
Instead of a touchpad, the kernel had installed it as a PS2 Generic
wheel mouse, so of course it didn't do anything. The thing is, after
that, the pad wouldn't work even when booting from any of the Live CDs I
tried - 10.10 up to 11.10. I took the battery out because obviously
something was 'remembering' that I didn't have a touchpad. Still no
luck. This morning, I thought that the only place that anything could
have been stored was the bios flash memory.

After a bios reset to defaults, the touchpad came back on line again and
try as I might, I can't seem to break it again.

Any thoughts? I'm really curious. The touchpad gets installed as an
ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad.

Regards,Barry.

Oh I agree! However, the bios is a layer between the hardware and the
OS, and this bios has a setting for disabling the touchpad, so it could
get in the way. The inconsistency is the real mystery, but if the fault
fails to re-appear, I think I can blame it on something that the bios
was doing.

[ubuntu-uk] Xubuntu 11.10 Problems

2011-10-16 Thread Nigel Verity

Hi
I'd be interested to learn the experiences of anybody installing Xubuntu 11.10
from scratch or upgrading from 11.04. I've tried both today and had some real
problems. The online upgrade crashed, the system recovery option on the LiveCD
didn't work and the full install has resulted in a system whereby most of the
theme settings are ignored by most applications, so that the whole OS is stuck
with the look of classic Windows 3!
I've gone back to 11.04 and everything is fine again; rock-solid as it has been
from the day it was released. Consequently, I don't think the problem is purely
down to my hardware (Acer 1410 laptop).
Leaving aside the cosmetic issues, I didn't spot any new features or functions
in 11.10 that really justified the upgrade. Possibly a cautionary tale for
anybody considering moving up.
Cheers

Hello.

I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 via Wubi on my laptop about an hour ago,
and I have not used the a11y PPA. I was able to access the wireless icon
normally, if that is of any help to you. I find that it is actually
working wonderfully using Orca.

Thanks.

I love the new way to run accessibility on the live CD. Great! I just
wish it also worked from the instance that gets run when you choose
to try without installing. Running manually works, but consistency
would rule.

Had some issues with the install, but those weren't accessibility
related.

My new installation didn't come up talking. I had to run Orca
manually, enable accessibility and log back out and in. My
expectation was that it'd come up talking as soon as I logged in.

Along similar lines, Orca doesn't run automatically. I have to start
it manually. This despite my impression that the screen reader toggle
in the accessibility settings screen is enabled. I can't seem to find
a Run Orca on startup option in Orca's preferences anymore.

Unity seems quite keyboard accessible. Going to need time to get used
to the many new commands.

My timezone is incorrect and I can't figure out how to reset it. In
Time and Date I see a text area containing the location New York, but
I can't figure a way to set this to anything local to me. I tried
entering Chicago since that's usually the timezone I choose, but
that doesn't seem to take.

Lots of widgets seem to be misrepresented as checkboxes. In
particular, many menu items appear this way.

I'm not clear on how to navigate some of the panels in Unity 2D.
They're also said to be inaccessible even though I did get some
feedback from Orca at one point.

All notifications speak Notification: notify-osd. I have to look at
.cache/notify-osd.log to see what I missed.

While this is a long list of negatives, I'm quite impressed at how
accessible things are after such a major change. I probably won't put
11.10 on my main machine for now, but I'm enjoying playing with it on
the netbook.

My new installation didn't come up talking. I had to run Orca

Along similar lines, Orca doesn't run automatically. I have to start

They're also said to be inaccessible even though I did get some

I added speakup_soft start=1 at the end of the file /etc/modules

[Bug 872839] Re: no localised Australian CD ISO

2011-10-16 Thread Chris
OK, what do we need to do this? I guess a desktop image with a more
Australian theme? Don't we need to stay with the default colours as
much as possible, otherwise we risk breaking the default theme?.

As a photographer I have a few ideas about this, along the the lines of
a very photo-shopped and abstracted image.

Also the Australian translations which I understand are in progress. Do
we have to spin the ISO ourselves, or is there an official process?

[Bug 872839] Re: no localised Australian CD ISO

2011-10-16 Thread Joel Pickett
Hi Chris,

This bug is related to the following blueprint --
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubuntu-au-iso-l10n

it's nothing as such official yet, just drafting a few ideas on the
possibilities.

The full spec of that blueprint loosely ties into the main desktop iso
localisation bp at --
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-o-cd-localization

I've merely just copied over the things that would apply to us. Anyone
can spin the iso's but we need to come to a consensus as a team as to
what to include (will be a work in progress very soon). At the bottom
of the main bp, you'll find details on how to customise/localise a
version of Ubuntu -- note you'll need an oneiric or late machine.

I don't think that is the right approach. It's perfectly possible that
translators would be translating the server guide and making those
translations available through their websites or other means. If so
it's a great shame if translation teams are not able to get that done
in time for the release. The only way to allow that to happen is to
respect the same freezes as the rest of the documentation, i.e. to
freeze it prior to the release and allow translations to happen
thereafter.

That's also simpler from an administrative point of view, rather than
having different rules applicable to different types of documentation.

Re: Merge requests for serverguide

2011-10-16 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think the server-docs team is very small and does an excellent job. I think
they deserve congrats rather than criticism (even tho it wasn't really meant as
criticism).

However, i think that if they can follow the same freeze-date that other docs
do then it might help. Presumably it's reasonably easy to keep working on
updating it but just avoid uploading the updates until after the freeze is over.

Things can't always be perfect and there is never enough time to do things
properly the first time but hopefully there is chance to get it better for the
time after this one.
Regards from
Tom :)

[Ubuntu-BR] Ubuntu 11.10 em um Sony Vaio

2011-10-16 Thread Andre Cavalcante
Olá people!

Vou contar minha sina com o Ubuntu 11.10 no meu Sony Vaio VPCF1.

Baixei a versão normal Ubuntu 11.10.
separado do raiz /
Fiz o boot na pen. Correu!

Uau!
pasta.
Me empolguei e instalei!

login! Mais fixe ainda, a Webcam integrada tava funfando!
Primeiro boot.

O Unit bunitinho, bunitinho.
Comecei a usar.

Primeiro, nada de rede.
Wifi totalmente desligada. Ué, mas no live-Pen funfava!
Abri um terminal:
ifconfig
e tava lá a wlan0

Problema, como inserir a senha do Wifi. A interface estava cinzenta.

Tentei instalar o ubuntu-restrict-extras. Nada! Tentei instalar outras
coisas, nada!
Abri um terminal: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restrict-extras e funcionou!
software. As únicas entradas eram justamente a do apt que funfava no
terminal.

E então, começam a acontecer coisas estranhas.
As barras lateral e superior somem.
Reboot!

Vou no terminal novamente:
ifconfig -a
E vejo tudo ok!

cedo!

Abro os drivers restritos, somem novamente os paineis lateral e superior.
Tento ativar o driver restrito da nvidia, e nada!
Só instala coisas via terminal?
Vamos lá, não desisto, abro o terminal: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
Não acha!

cima e as opções aparecem.
Retiro o rato, as opções desaparecem.
Logout e login, e voltam a aparecer.

Espeto o hd externo! Shan! Shan! Não consegue montar: não tenho direito!
Aí começa a fazer sentido: talvez tenho algum problema no meu /home,
naqueles arquivos de configuração.
Sem problema, tenho o backup:
rm -f .*
Reboot para me certificar de tudo...

Volto.
Não consigo limpar a lixeira: não tenho permissão:
novamente: sudo rm ~/.local/share/Trash/files/*
E aí apaga a lixeira.

Reboot!

Boot again!

Desculple a demora no retorno..

 Olá people!

Vou contar minha sina com o Ubuntu 11.10 no meu Sony Vaio VPCF1.

Baixei a versão normal Ubuntu 11.10.
 separado do raiz /
Fiz o boot na pen. Correu!

Uau!
 pasta.
 Me empolguei e instalei!

login! Mais fixe ainda, a Webcam integrada tava funfando!
 Primeiro boot.

 O Unit bunitinho, bunitinho.
 Comecei a usar.

 Primeiro, nada de rede.
Wifi totalmente desligada. Ué, mas no live-Pen funfava!
 Abri um terminal:
 ifconfig
 e tava lá a wlan0

Problema, como inserir a senha do Wifi. A interface estava cinzenta.

Tentei instalar o ubuntu-restrict-extras. Nada! Tentei instalar outras
 coisas, nada!
Abri um terminal: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restrict-extras e funcionou!
software. As únicas entradas eram justamente a do apt que funfava no
 terminal.

E então, começam a acontecer coisas estranhas.
As barras lateral e superior somem.
 Reboot!

 Vou no terminal novamente:
 ifconfig -a
 E vejo tudo ok!

 cedo!

Abro os drivers restritos, somem novamente os paineis lateral e superior.
Tento ativar o driver restrito da nvidia, e nada!
 Só instala coisas via terminal?
Vamos lá, não desisto, abro o terminal: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
 Não acha!

 cima e as opções aparecem.
Retiro o rato, as opções desaparecem.
 Logout e login, e voltam a aparecer.

Espeto o hd externo! Shan! Shan! Não consegue montar: não tenho direito!
Aí começa a fazer sentido: talvez tenho algum problema no meu /home,
 naqueles arquivos de configuração.
 Sem problema, tenho o backup:
 rm -f .*
Reboot para me certificar de tudo...

 Volto.
Não consigo limpar a lixeira: não tenho permissão:
 novamente: sudo rm ~/.local/share/Trash/files/*
 E aí apaga a lixeira.

Reboot!

 Boot again!

  Olá people!

Vou contar minha sina com o Ubuntu 11.10 no meu Sony Vaio VPCF1.

Baixei a versão normal Ubuntu 11.10.
 /home
  separado do raiz /
Fiz o boot na pen. Correu!

Uau!
 a
  pasta.
  Me empolguei e instalei!

login! Mais fixe ainda, a Webcam integrada tava funfando!
  Primeiro boot.
 3D!)

  O Unit bunitinho, bunitinho.
  Comecei a usar.

  Primeiro, nada de rede.
Wifi totalmente desligada. Ué, mas no live-Pen funfava!
  Abri um terminal:
  ifconfig
  e tava lá a wlan0

Problema, como inserir a senha do Wifi. A interface estava cinzenta.

Tentei instalar o ubuntu-restrict-extras. Nada! Tentei instalar outras
  coisas, nada!
Abri um terminal: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restrict-extras e
 funcionou!
software. As únicas entradas eram justamente a do apt que funfava no
  terminal.

E então, começam a acontecer coisas estranhas.
As barras lateral e superior somem.
  Reboot!

 habilitar
  (a opção entá em cinzento!)
  Vou no terminal novamente:
  ifconfig -a
  E vejo tudo ok!

  cedo!

Abro os drivers restritos, somem novamente os paineis lateral e superior.
Tento ativar o driver restrito da nvidia, e nada!
  Só instala coisas via terminal?
Vamos lá, não desisto, abro o terminal: sudo apt-get install
 nvidia-current
  Não acha!

Corro o rato
 por
  cima e as opções aparecem.
Retiro o rato, as opções desaparecem.
  Logout e login, e voltam a aparecer.

Espeto o hd externo! Shan! Shan! Não consegue montar: não tenho direito!
Aí começa a fazer sentido: talvez tenho algum problema no meu /home,
  naqueles arquivos de configuração.
  Sem problema, tenho o backup:
  rm -f .*
Reboot para me certificar de tudo...

  Volto.
Não consigo limpar a lixeira: não tenho permissão:
  novamente: sudo rm ~/.local/share/Trash/files/*
  E aí apaga a lixeira.

Reboot!

  estava tudo integrado.

  Abraços

[Ubuntu-BR] Dica: contornando a remoção do preview de áudio/vídeo no nautilus 3.2

2011-10-16 Thread Sidney

http://www.webupd8.org/2011/10/install-sushi-file-previewer-in-ubuntu.html

Re: [Bug 874518] Re: ssh fails after upgrade to 11.10

2011-10-16 Thread Jason Nett
Upon a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10, I still have problems with ssh. After
studying it all day, I believe that the problem has something to do with ssh
not being able to communicate a valid kerberos ticket via gssapi-with-mic.

The problem area of the verbose output looks like:

debug1: Next authentication method: gssapi-with-mic
debug1: Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more information
KDC can't fulfill requested option

debug1: Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more information
KDC can't fulfill requested option

debug1: Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more
information

debug2: we sent a gssapi-with-mic packet, wait for reply
---

where it should look like (according to the successful execution on my
laptop that is still running 11.04):

debug1: Next authentication method: gssapi-with-mic
debug2: we sent a gssapi-with-mic packet, wait for reply
debug1: Authentication succeeded (gssapi-with-mic).
Authenticated to name.org.gov ([1xx.xxx.xxx.xxx]:xx).
--

If I look at the version numbers of the ssh packages installed with dpkg -l
| grep ssh, Ubuntu 11.10 has:

ii openssh-client
1:5.8p1-7ubuntu1secure shell (SSH) client, for
secure access to remote machines
ii ssh-askpass-gnome
1:5.8p1-7ubuntu1interactive X program to prompt
users for a passphrase for ssh-add

while 11.04 has

ii openssh-client 1:5.8p1-1ubuntu3
secure shell (SSH) client, for secure access to
remote machines
ii ssh-askpass-gnome 1:5.8p1-1ubuntu3
interactive X program to prompt users for a
passphrase for ssh-add

I've searched through every configuration file I can find, especially those
in ./ssh/ and /etc/ssh/, but have not been able to solve the problem or
produce any different results. The best I can think of is that there's
something about the newer versions that gssapi-with-mic is not agreeing well
with.

I would greatly appreciate if this bug could be fixed because it affects my
ability to work remotely from home.

Re: [Bug 874518] Re: ssh fails after upgrade to 11.10

2011-10-16 Thread Clint Byrum
Excerpts from Jason Nett's message of Sun Oct 16 06:46:07 UTC 2011:
Upon a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10, I still have problems with ssh. After
studying it all day, I believe that the problem has something to do with ssh
not being able to communicate a valid kerberos ticket via gssapi-with-mic.

The problem area of the verbose output looks like:

 debug1: Next authentication method: gssapi-with-mic
debug1: Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more information
 KDC can't fulfill requested option

debug1: Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more information
 KDC can't fulfill requested option

debug1: Unspecified GSS failure. Minor code may provide more
 information

debug2: we sent a gssapi-with-mic packet, wait for reply
 ---

where it should look like (according to the successful execution on my
laptop that is still running 11.04):

 debug1: Next authentication method: gssapi-with-mic
debug2: we sent a gssapi-with-mic packet, wait for reply
 debug1: Authentication succeeded (gssapi-with-mic).
 Authenticated to name.org.gov ([1xx.xxx.xxx.xxx]:xx).
 --

If I look at the version numbers of the ssh packages installed with dpkg -l
 | grep ssh, Ubuntu 11.10 has:

 ii openssh-client
 1:5.8p1-7ubuntu1secure shell (SSH) client, for
 secure access to remote machines
 ii ssh-askpass-gnome
 1:5.8p1-7ubuntu1interactive X program to prompt
users for a passphrase for ssh-add

 while 11.04 has

 ii openssh-client 1:5.8p1-1ubuntu3
secure shell (SSH) client, for secure access to
 remote machines
 ii ssh-askpass-gnome 1:5.8p1-1ubuntu3
interactive X program to prompt users for a
 passphrase for ssh-add

I've searched through every configuration file I can find, especially those
in ./ssh/ and /etc/ssh/, but have not been able to solve the problem or
produce any different results. The best I can think of is that there's
something about the newer versions that gssapi-with-mic is not agreeing well
 with.

I would greatly appreciate if this bug could be fixed because it affects my
ability to work remotely from home.

Jason, you are using kerberos auth.. can you do

kinit user@KERBEROS.DOMAIN

and get assigned kerberos credentials? (klist should show them)

2011-10-16 Thread Richard Sellam
Hello,

I'm not sure this is a serious bug.

I did some investigation and can confirm you can't install mysql-
server-5.1 on a running oneiric desktop livecd because you can't get job
status when running status mysql from the livecd (returns status:
unknown job mysql).

Installation works without any issue when running on an installed system
(tried both i386 desktop and amd64 server), so i would suggest to only
install it on a running system.

If I look at the version numbers of the ssh packages installed with dpkg
 -l
  | grep ssh, Ubuntu 11.10 has:

  ii openssh-client
  1:5.8p1-7ubuntu1secure shell (SSH) client, for
  secure access to remote machines

  1:5.8p1-7ubuntu1interactive X program to prompt
users for a passphrase for ssh-add

  while 11.04 has

  ii openssh-client 1:5.8p1-1ubuntu3
secure shell (SSH) client, for secure access to
  remote machines
  ii ssh-askpass-gnome 1:5.8p1-1ubuntu3
interactive X program to prompt users for a
  passphrase for ssh-add

I've searched through every configuration file I can find, especially
 those
in ./ssh/ and /etc/ssh/, but have not been able to solve the problem or
produce any different results. The best I can think of is that there's
something about the newer versions that gssapi-with-mic is not agreeing
 well
  with.

I would greatly appreciate if this bug could be fixed because it affects
 my
ability to work remotely from home.

Jason, you are using kerberos auth.. can you do

 kinit user@KERBEROS.DOMAIN

and get assigned kerberos credentials? (klist should show them)

 things I've checked:
  1. Kerberos authentication is working fine, that's not the problem.
  2. I tried restarting and reinstalling ssh, but neither helped.

properly function ssh in 11.04) and replace what is on my 11.10

[Bug 871747] Re: invalid argument accessing files on hgfs after modified on host

2011-10-16 Thread Marty Vona
I should add that the workaround I suggested is quite annoying, as in
order to unmount hgfs you first have to exit it in all shells
(pushd/popd does not help). I have actually had to downgrade to ubuntu
10.04; 11.04 is effectively unusable in vmware fusion for me. Is it
working for anyone else?

[Bug 768846] Re: autofs does not mount /net/host

2011-10-16 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Oh, here we go again. Yet another Ubuntu bug report that goes
completely ignored. The requested information (six months ago) is even
provided (same day as requested) and nothing is done with it like so
many other bugs.

Is this yet another problem that is simply too difficult to solve and so
goes ignored until it is solved somewhere else, in the meanwhile, 60
days goes by here and then the bug janitor goes closing it out as
expired?

2011-10-16 Thread babayete
Problema resuelto
===

pendrive USB. La solución (fué puro azar) fué la siguiente:

- Instalé aptitude (sudo apt-get install aptitude)
correctamente.
- Instalé posteriormente apache, php5, php5-mysql y phpmyadmin y todo funciona
correctamente.

[Bug 874518] Re: ssh with kerberos fails after upgrade to 11.10

2011-10-16 Thread Clint Byrum
Ok Jason, thanks for all the leg work. I think at this point we need to
try and reproduce your setup to try and address the bug. To be clear,

Your client is on 11.10, and can obtain kerberos tickets fine, but
cannot log into any SSH service that normally would accept these
tickets.

Is that an accurate reflection of the problem?
