Hi Elfy,

Unfortunately there is no hard data on the bug to allow me to say
anything:
  * we do not have any of the logs for the install (syslog, partman,
Ubiquity debug;
  * we do not know what Ubuntu version you were trying;
  * we do not know the Ubiquity version.

You could try to run 'ubuntu-bug ubiquity' on the failing ARM install,
and open a bug with the results; alternatively, you can repeat the
install, and run 'apport-collect 1036742', which would collect this
basic info.

If it is impossible to actually install to the sdcard that the install
medium is on then that's fine - need to know one way or the other though.

 Hi Mart,

I disagree with Ho Wan Chan, here is my opinion.

  Hi

I have a couple of questions about how to configure my machine

Is there a significant difference if any between testing in

On virtual machines you are testing some parts of Ubuntu. On real
hardware you are testing others, in fact, depending on which
 hardware
you have, you are increasing our chances of finding problems for
 your
specific HW, because we don't have infinite HW to test on.
 Basically,
when you test on HW you are using drivers that noone else is
 potentially
 using.

In the Platform QA Team in Canonical, we are testing with VMs for
 the
daily ISO testing, and we test on a variety of HW the different
 kernel
SRUs, so that we are reasonably confident that they will work on a
 wide
 variety of HW.

Testing on HW is different from testing on VMs, both useful
 depending on
what you are trying to achieve, since with ISO testing we are
 trying to
cover as much HW as we can, testing on HW will be more useful from
 that
 viewpoint.

Would it be reasonable to dual boot version I'm testing with my
 regular
everyday system? I ask this because of my netbook: on my desktop I
 could
easily use virtual machine or change HDD-s. But netbook is to
 weak for
virtual machine and changing HDD seams to troublesome.

You can dual boot your everyday system, but there are risks that an
installation goes wrong and you blow up your current system. That
 is the
reason why we don't recommend it. If you are confident you know your
system and that won't happen to you, I still recommend you have
 backups
of all the important documents before attempting the testing along
 your
existing system. Other than that, it is very useful that you
 install the
current version along an existing one, because many users will be
 doing
just that, and we want them to be able to do it.

 Thanks,
 Gema

Testing removable media

2012-08-15 Thread Jeff Lane

Hey folks,

I wanted to ask a quick and dirty question:

What would you consider a Stress test of removable media like USB Keys
 SD/SDHC cards?

I'm working on enhancing a script and so far, the only idea put forth
was to do multiple simultaneous read/writes (like 100 at a time). But is
that a realistic stress test for something meant to be small, light but
with a very slow transfer speed?

Or would it be more appropriate to do something more realistic like,
transfer increasingly large files up to a pre-determined size (perhaps a
2GB file size max?)

Cheers,

Jeff

It all depends on what you are trying to achieve. There are many
variables and there are file-system implementations that can interfere
with your measurements.

Or would it be more appropriate to do something more realistic like,
transfer increasingly large files up to a pre-determined size (perhaps a

Maybe for an SD card more realistic would be to transfer 3-4 MB files,
but tons of them, like people do with cameras/music. Again back to my
question of what you are trying to stress.

Re: Which Hardware Profile to Post?

2012-08-15 Thread Nicholas Skaggs
Sanchit, good question. This cycle I have been working towards bringing
a community hardware database to be utilized for testing purposes like
this. We might consider including a flag of some sort to indicate that
you utilized a virtual machine for the testing. At the moment, I have
been ignoring the hardware profile field when I report virtual machine
results. If I encounter a bug, I mention I was testing in a VM in the
bug report (it's also obvious from the logs I believe).

Still, even though I am creating and destroying VM's, I could post the
generic profile of one, along with the visualization software I use and
the host machine I'm running. I suppose then that would be my answer --
I would put a URL that had both :-) Or leave it blank. It would be
confusing to put your pc hardware profile in there since you didn't test
with it.

I have a new problem now: It no longer boots.

It starts up with the splash screen (for Ubuntu Studio) and then that
disappears, I get a CLI and various text outputs, and it gets as far as
starting TIMidity++ but then freezes. I can still reboot and even press

Any ideas what could be wrong and how to fix it?

installing grub on a thumb drive

I have Vinux 3.01, which is using Ubuntu 10.04, installed onto an 8GB thumb

I partitioned the thumb drive, so there is a 4GB partition with MS-DOS on
it.
I used the Universal Pendrive program to put the Vinux onto it, with a 2GB
persistence.
Without installing grub, I don't know how the user will be able to boot to
DOS if he wants to.
When I run the command:
grub-install /dev/sdb1

Ok, I think I have taken care of all of those which seem to be left over

With regard to ubuntustudio-default-settings:

It appears that for commits 133 to 135 I did not do a bzr add and so
those files got added at 136. The comments for these earlier commits
should therefore be for the these file additions.

commit 137 the comment should have mentioned that lyx was moved from
office to publishing. This was intentional and something noticed in adding
the extra icon to the office menu. I will add this to the changelog.
(done)

The help icon has been fixed (renamed) and the menu has been synced

The mime line has been removed from the extra desktop files.

Re: 12.04LTS and the Telstra 4G mobile wireless modem

2012-08-15 Thread Geoffrey
Further to my previous message: On Telstra's advice I checked the memory
card inside the 4G modem. It is titled 'BIGPOND' which means the APN
name is 'telstra.bigpond'. This is the same as I have been using with
the old BP3-EXT modem for which a connection name appears in the menu.
However no name appears in the menu when the 4G modem is plugged into
the PC's USB socket and the modem signals readiness to relay data.
Why not? (I ask myself). The modem is a standard UMTS, HSPA device and
therefore should be recognised by Ubuntu. Or have I missed something?
Thank you for any help.

12.04LTS and the Telstra 4G mobile wireless modem

2012-08-15 Thread peter baker
geoff

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/Projects/WirelessBroadbandInformation

should help you here

if not, could you please update the wiki so it helps the next person once
you resolve your issue

peter

This week I received from Telstra their Sierra 4G modem for mobile
broadband which I must use in my location. Those familiar with this
modem will know that it works on 3G as well and on all bands
(850/1800/2500 MHz). There is no 4G on the Sunshine Coast, QLD.
My plan/location uses 3G and 850 MHz and I am currently usine the
 original Maxon BP3-EXT modem.
When connected via USB the 4G modem detects 3G with adequate signal
strength and is ready to relay data. However I cannot get 12.04 to
connect with the modem having tried all the Plan descriptions listed by
Ubuntu. I have asked Telstra for the APN via email but have not yet had
a reply. I hope that this will help 12.04 to find the right connecting
file. Eventually I wish to use the 4G modem with a laptop PC in a true
mobile anywhere situation as well as at home.
I would appreciate advice or suggestions from members.
 Thank you.

[Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Tablecloth, Banner and a Special Birthday!

2012-08-15 Thread Benjamin Kerensa
Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that we have received our approved team
gift from Canonical which is a tablecloth and banner with the official
Ubuntu branding.

We will continue to of course use our localized banner and at some point
might seek to have the other banner in Salem or another region where our
LoCo is active so they can hold some events.

I also wan't to remind everyone that our upstream friends (Debian) will be
celebrating its 19th Birthday tomorrow! The Debian Social Folks are
planning a Debian Gathering next week on August 22nd at 6:30pm at Lucky Lab
to celebrate the occasion!

   - sudo apt-get install samba

necessário instalar o samba server, o default do ubuntu é vir apenas o
   client.

   - sudo adduser nome_do_usuario

  voce.

   - sudo smbpasswd -a nome_do_usuario

digita lá no executar: \\ip_do_linux\ e ele vai pedir usuário e senha.

admitindo que voce digitou o usuario e senha e funcionou, então as

/etc/samba/smb.conf (sabe fazer? senao, te explico tambem).

/home/nome_do_usuario/trabalhos. dentro da pasta trabalhos vai
 existir

linux? isto é, via ícone users and groups; dessa forma,

(o ubuntu instala o samba server automaticamente).

- talvez seja necessário ajusta os domínios linux-windows.
nano /etc/samba/smb.conf
# Change this to the workgroup/NT-domain name your Samba server will

   workgroup = AQUICULTURA

Estou neste momento utilizando a internet
cabeada, agora eu consigo acessar a maioria das páginas porém algo no
mínimo interessante ainda acontece, tento acessar o facebook, por
exemplo no chrome e aparece a seguinte mensagem:

 Nenhum dado foi recebido

Não é possível carregar a página da web porque o servidor não enviou os
dados.

   *Veja algumas sugestões:*

 * *Recarregue http://www.facebook.com/esta página da web mais tarde.*

*Erro 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): O servidor encerrou a conexão sem

rede do computador.

Matriz:
- Rede Interna = 172.1.1.0
- Servidor Debian LTSP = 200.221.XXX.XXX (IP Fixo Externo)

Filial:
Máquina (Terminal Burro) = Tentar autenticar no 200.221.XXX.XXX

Acredito que só fechando uma VPN?! Alguém tem idéia se isso é possível?

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] 12.04 LTS Travando

2012-08-15 Thread Rafael Bedendo
e o bumblebee, veja o link abaixo:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/134594/how-to-install-bumblebee-ui-gui-in-ubuntu-12-04

Eu faço o seguinte:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa

sudo update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

sudo apt-get install bbswitch-dkms bumblebee

velocidade do sistema.

DHCP lá no SERVER=200.221.XXX.XXX

teria a rede funcionando.

[Ubuntu-be] Software Freedom Day Brussels - 22 September 2012

2012-08-15 Thread Jurgen Gaeremyn

Hey all,

In hackerspace Brussels we're having Software Freedom Day again on
Saturday the 22nd of September. This year we're going to reach out to
the 'general public' (through local newspaper, local computershops, etc.)

To give some context, we are setting up:
- a bunch of stands demonstrating practical user applications. 15min
showcases in french/dutch, scheduled all over the afternoon;
- the 'penguin bar' : a whitty team helping out people with specific
questions (cfr the 'genius bar' in yr applestore)

- a bar for drinks free pop-corn
- a room with talks on software Freedom / activism
- a game corner for kids to discover some nice opensource games
- the bhackroom : security implications on using a computer
- an electronics corner : discovering arduino and other opensource hardware

Can you help us out in getting this done? We were thinking of ubuntu-be
specifically for the 'penguin bar' and possibly some 15min showcases of
user-applications you use/like and want to show to the general public.
Send me a message if you're in!

fyi: software freedom day also takes place in Ghent, Genk and Namur (and
all over the world) on the 15th of September, so you don't have any
excuse not to get involved ! :-) (mind you : we're organising one
week later, on the 22nd)

More info and the latest details:
- http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/map/index.php?year=2012

Grtz,
for the SFD-Brussel team,

2012-08-15 Thread Oleg V. Mikheev
I believe the issue is that the Win 8 OS
is not the first partition that GRUB finds when searching the drive.

[Bug 911747] Re: [Feature] Add AuthorizedKeysCommand to OpenSSH

2012-08-15 Thread mrw
«Lobby upstream» means here:
https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1663

Unfortunately there is also no one responsible for it, as it seems and
it hangs around since years, same as here. :-(

I need to get the authorized keys from LDAP, so I need either the LPK-
patch or this AuthorizedKeysCommand-patch.

See also my repository for patched builds:
http://marc.wäckerlin.ch/computer/blog/ssh_and_ldap

LPK patch is also orphaned here: http://code.google.com/p/openssh-lpk

So everything is working, but hanging around for years in the
maintainers bug tracking ... really an awful situation! Praise RedHat
for at least doing something!

The return value noted here is a scanning error code. This behavior has
been seen on files that do not decompress correctly. If using clamav-
milter, messages with attachments flagged as CL_EFORMAT trigger the
OnFail Action specified in the clamav-milter.conf configuration file.
The default Action for OnFail is Defer, so these messages will be
rescanned at intervals and never delivered.

There is a workaround to break the loop of re-scanning these broken
files. To reject messages with these attachments, change the OnFail
Action to Reject. If you prefer the old behavior of the previous
release, change the OnFail Action to Accept.

These solutions should be used as a temporary workaround only and in an
environment where the connection to clamd is stable. Changing this
configuration line will also affect any messages that fail scanning
because of transient issues such as dropped connections or out of memory
errors. If OnFail is set to Accept, malicious mail may be passed by the
scanner. If OnFail is set to Reject, non-malicious mail may be rejected
by the scanner. This workaround should be used with caution.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

It looks like the hostname on your system is not set correctly, and this
causes the postfix maintainer script to fail. Try sudo dpkg-reconfigure
postfix to change the hostname that postfix is using.

Marking this as a duplicate of bug 625023, because this is another
example of the configuration system allowing invalid values to be
entered.

But this misconfiguration itself isn't really a bug, so see
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community for pointers on how to get help
on fixing this if you continue to have trouble.

[Bug 1036622] Re: Slow NIS performance with programs such as 'finger'

I'm not sure how much help you're going to get on this issue since only
a small proportion of users use NIS.

Five seconds sounds like some kind of timeout to me. Can you use tcpdump
to see if there's anything obvious that pops out?

[Bug 1037037] [NEW] etckeeper not working on Precise

2012-08-15 Thread Phil Dobbin
Public bug reported:

I run etckeeper on several different distros (CentOS, Debian, Fedora)
it works just fine. However when installing via Synaptic on Ubuntu 12.04
Precise Pangolin i686 after the installation I run the initial commit
which is OK, it fails to work either via Software Update, Synaptic or
apt.

I've triple checked all the config files, I've switched from bzr to git,
I've purged re-installed I've also installed it on three different
physical systems (one of which was a clean install i686 from a Live CD)
but after the initial commit, nothing happens.

The cron job doesn't run after a Software Update, both `status`
`log` are telling me the repo's clean when it patently isn't.

From what I've seen on Google searches pertaining to this problem, it
seems I'm the only one who's seeing this which is why I went to lengths
that I have to make sure it wasn't a problem my end.

I've asked on the Ubuntu User mailing list have received no responses
so I've filed this now as a bug.

Further details:

[Bug 1037055] [NEW] winbind does not refresh kerberos tickets

2012-08-15 Thread Ian Gordon
Public bug reported:

winbindd will renew kerberos tickets until they expire, but it seems unable to
refresh them before expiry.

I am using in smb.conf

winbind refresh ticket = true

and have cached_login set for pam_winbind

After 7 days ( the renewal limit on AD kerberos tickets) the ticket
expires and I lose access to my NFS home directory which uses sec=krb5

I have tried to debug why this is happening and have come to the
conclusion that there are to important variables for ticket refreshing
to work (both in winbind/winbindd_cred_cache.c):

ccache_list
memory_creds_list

and that the function that stores the password for later refreshing use
is called

winbindd_add_memory_creds

This function though requires that the user is ccache_list before it
stores the password in a way it can be used by the rekinit part of the
function krb5_ticket_refresh_handler.

The problem as I see it is that winbind forks and the parent populates
ccache_list and the child populates memory_creds_list.
This leads to the password not being stored in a way that can be used by the
rekinit code in krb5_ticket_refresh_handler.

As a dirty hack (attached) I tried populating memory_creds_list from the
same location as ccache_list get populated (winbindd_raw_kerberos_login
in winbind/winbindd_pam.c).

This hack fixes the problem.

[Bug 1037055] Re: winbind does not refresh kerberos tickets

2012-08-15 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I appreciate the quality of this bug report and I'm sure
it'll be helpful to others experiencing the same issue.

This sounds like an upstream bug to me. Please can you verify this by
building directly from the latest upstream source? If this can be
confirmed as an upstream bug, the best route to getting it fixed in
Ubuntu in this case would be to file an upstream bug if you're able to
do that. Otherwise, I'm not sure what we can do directly in Ubuntu to
fix the problem.

If you do end up filing an upstream bug, please link to it from here.
Thanks!

[Bug 1028585] Re: Memory allocation problem with ipvsadm

2012-08-15 Thread Ralf Spenneberg
Further information:
ipvsadm -A -t 192.168.10.21:80 -s rr
works, while
ipvsadm -A -t 192.168.10.21:80 -s -rr
(obviously wrong syntax) creates a memory allocation error.

Apparently whenever a syntax or semantic error occurs ipvsadm generates
an memory allocation error.

So generate a virtual server:
ipvsadm -A -t 10.131.208.21:80 -rr
Add a real server with masquerading:
ipvsadm -a -t 10.131.208.21.80 -r 192.168.0.5 -w 1 -m
Edit the real server without specifying the -m
ipvsadm -e -t 10.131.208.21.80 -r 192.168.0.5 -w 0 -m
memory allocation problem
ipvsadm -e -t -t 10.131.208.21.80 -r 192.168.0.5 -w 0 -m
works.

Apparently syntactical errors always generate a memory allocation error.

[Bug 1037060] Re: openvswitch-datapath-dkms 1.4.2+git20120612-2ubuntu1: openvswitch kernel module failed to build

2012-08-15 Thread Ben Pfaff
This could presumably be fixed by applying upstream commit 3d192f8e5655
datapath: Use ETH_ALEN instead of VLAN_ETH_ALEN. I don't think that
OVS branch-1.4 is supposed to support kernel 3.5 however.

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-08-15 Thread Serge Hallyn
The following from comment #51:

rebooting the guest fixes the problem until it happens again. The reboot
does not actually kill the kvm session and get a new process ID, but
somehow having the guest go through the init again fixes it (until it
happens again some period later).

makes me suspect the guest OS (though it still could be virtual hw in
qemu).

@Kraig,
do you have a script or recipe with which you can pretty reliably trigger this?

[Bug 1032322] Re: Swap space allocation for large memory systems needs improvement

2012-08-15 Thread Robbie Williamson
I disagree with the importance being set to Wishlist.

I would say that default settings (e.g. 100% memory) is for the
default/majority of systems...what systems are you referring to? If
you mean Desktop, sure...but not Server, where it is customary to have a
LOT of RAM in your configuration.

[Bug 1036622] Re: Slow NIS performance with programs such as 'finger'

2012-08-15 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Well, it is not like I use NIS at home all by myself :p if Ubuntu wont
support it, just remove it from distribution then. So it would make the
decision of which distro to use in large organisations easier.

I checked the packets using tcpdump limited to the NIS server.

Ubuntu had 24k lines in the output file
Fedora had 2.4k lines in the output file

Fedora was accessing port 767 and accessed an additional UDP port 770
and sometimes 938 on the server... while Ubuntu was just accessing 767
only so many more times...

I tried disabling iptables on ubuntu altogether and still the results
are same. It is just that I am getting the correct info as well and
finger seems to be working. I am not sure what might be timing out.

[Bug 1032322] Re: Swap space allocation for large memory systems needs improvement

2012-08-15 Thread Steve Langasek
Agreed that this is more than just a wishlist. AIUI, for cloud compute
nodes this swap requirement can as much as double the local disk space
requirements, which is not an appropriate outcome. I think we really
need different recipes for server vs. desktop installs, here.
