[ubuntu-uk] Shutter not working properly?

2013-01-16 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker
I'm creating images of actions in setting up various items for a
training document using Shutter on 12.04
I can add graphics such as arrows etc to the image, but the Text option
doesn't seem to work. I can add a text box which says new text but
there seems to be no way of entering what I want the text box to say.
Clicking in the text box just brings up the preferences with no option
to put my own text in.

Can anyone help?

Is there an 'official' source of information that anyone is aware of, that
lists the new features and changes fro each daily build, so that it is
easier to investigate these more effectively?

I currently find myself gathering much information about features
introduced or proposed new features, from summary news sites (such as
'OMG!Ubuntu' etc..) and figured that there must be a more informative way?

I appreciate this is more out of interest really, from a testing point of
view then if the test case still passes... then it still passes, but was a
 wondering thought last night.

 Any information, much appreciated.

Finally, I would like to say well done to Nicholas and Phill for the
successful Ubuntu Classroom sessions they ran last night, I found them very
helpful and personally learnt a few things from both. Thank you.

 All the best,

Ubuntu Studio 12.04.2 x86 live images missing

2013-01-16 Thread Ho Wan Chan

That might be a bigger problem for us, since Ubuntu Studio uses a

Mythbuntu should be getting the backport kernel and Quantal X stack in the

If the other flavours also want the backport kernel and Quantal X stack,
livecd-rootfs should be changed for them too.

I think something like this should be added to debian-cd for any flavours
opting into the backport kernel to unbreak the i386 builds otherwise:

I'm currently using a repurposed HP desktop machine running Ubuntu Server

 testing web assets via LAMP.
I'm looking to move to a machine to continue the file sharing (ubuntu, Macs,
windows xp, 7 8 machines) etc. but to also control the wired and WiFi
access throughout the home. I'm also running Twonky at the moment for file

Any pointers on where to start looking? I'm not after anything super

I'll answer similarly for one of the ones i recently deployed: N40L,
stock 2 GB RAM, 4 x 2 TB drives; first 32 GB of each drive is RAID 1 for
boot volumes, remainder of drives is a single RAID 5 partition.

* how loud are they in real world applications?

It's got a massive fan at the back, but it's at the ambient fan noise
level you easily ignore. The drives are louder when they are doing
lots of writes. In fact, my laptop when it's running super hot is
louder than it. So I personally don't notice the noise coming from it.

General consensus is it's very quiet. Because it's a 12cm fan, it seems
much quieter than any tower or rack mount server i've ever used. (But
my hearing might be bad after sitting in the same office as a ProCurve
3400cl switch for too long. :-)

* what sort of network throughput do you see?

I can't really comment on this one. I've never noticed it to be an
issue for anything I've used it for, and I did have it as a VPN end
point for my work at one point so it saw a lot of data throughput
without any issues. Also, I usually have 2 VMs running in Virtual Box
on it and all three machines (host + 2x VMs) seem to be quite
responsive for my needs network-wise.

Here's a graph from ours: http://libertysys.com.au/imagebin/n40l-network.png

This is running on the inbuilt network card with no attempt to optimise
performance. Usually the bottleneck on our backups (which is what this
traffic is) is either the source or destination disk. Never the network
unless it is plugged into a 100 Mbps port. This server is plugged into
a Gigabit copper port.

* any surprises in the hardware running Ubuntu?

I've only tried 12.04 LTS, but it runs flawlessly. Everything I've
tried works without any problems.

None. The server graphed above is actually running CentOS 6, but the
latest one i've deployed is Ubuntu 12.04.

If anyone has any insight I'd be interested, I'm looking for a
good balance between power consumption and enough power to run a
couple of other things that a basic NAS can't do.

I think it's a pretty good compromise between the two. My next personal
server will be one of them for sure.

Mine is typically running 12.04 with a minimal
LAMP server, backup server, general purpose SSH box, and
VirtualBox. There are usually two VMs running: my work
application dev server, which is heavily resource intensive
(HDD, CPU, and RAM), and a build server running Jenkins and
GitLab. I've had as many as 10 VMs running at once on it, but
it gets slow under a lot of load - which is to be expected
from only a 1.5 ghz dual core. I think it's a fantastic little
server, and worth it,especiallyfor the price if you're after
a good little all-rounder. It's even got an internal USB stick
if you want to boot from a minimal USB (i.e. ESXi).

If you need more RAM, you can put some 8GB sticks
in to get it up to 16, but I haven't experimented as some
chips don't work. If you need more CPU, get the N54L which is
more expensive but has a 2.2ghz dual core. But if you need
something for really CPU-heavy work, you might want something
  else.

Hope that helps, and isn't too much information.

Thanks,

On 16/04/12 07:03, Steve Langasek wrote:

 Hi folks,

Back at last UDS in November, we discussed whether it was time to switch
to
presenting 64-bit images as the default image for desktop, like they
already
are for server, now that all new desktop hardware is 64-bit and
multiarch is
 a reality.

There was a rough consensus at UDS that the blockers were solved, but
that
the question should be taken to ubuntu-devel to gather more input. That
input-gathering is happening much later than intended, but here we are
now.

 The blueprint at

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/foundations-p-64bit-by-default

includes links to some data gathered by the inimitable Colin King,
showing
that in terms of performance, there are both pros and cons for switching
to
amd64: memory consumption goes up, and therefore power consumption goes
up
if the system is making more use of swap, but on the other side, most
CPU-bound operations will be faster on amd64. So there is no clear
performance argument for preferring one over the other.

Where multiarch is concerned, we've made good progress on library
coverage;
over 400 library packages are multiarch coinstallable in 12.04, including
most of the usual suspects in the desktop stack, and indeed there are two
packages in the partner repository now that are available only as i386
packages installable using multiarch, instead of using ia32-libs which is
now just a compatibility wrapper package. So from what I've seen
compatibility with 32-bit binary software is in pretty good shape as
well.

Are there problems that we've overlooked with regards to shipping 64-bit
by
default on the desktop, or is it reasonable to make this switch for 12.04
LTS? Is there 32-bit binary software that you know about which is not
yet
supported on amd64 via multiarch, and ought to be before we consider
making
 64-bit the default?

Note that we're talking about three changes here:

   - Changing the default download link on ubuntu.com to point to 64-bit
 desktop images
   - Changing the pressed CDs distributed by Canonical to be 64-bit
instead of
 32-bit
   - Changing the architecture used for preformatted USB disks sold in the
 Canonical shop

In general, if people can think of reasons not to switch to 64-bit for
one
of these, those arguments would apply to the other; so if we think we're
ready for a switch, that switch should be applied across the board.

And regardless of which we decide to use as the default, both of amd64
and
i386 will continue to be supported architectures for the length of 12.04
LTS
and will remain available for download.

 Feedback welcome!

2013-01-16 Thread Adonai Silveira Canez

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] ícone abrir aba chromium sumiu

23.0.1271.97 no ubuntu 12.10.
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=169773

Eduardo

Atenciosamente,

[Ubuntu-be] ubuntu-be locoteam contact vacancy

2013-01-16 Thread Jan Claeys
Hello all,

In the near future I would like to step down as Ubuntu-be locoteam
contact, so that means there is a vacancy open for that job.

I spoke with some people about this before, and I think at least 2
people expressed an interest to take the job, but of course others can
be candidates too.

Being the locoteam contact isn't a lot of work, but requires that you
follow some mailing lists forward info if it seems relevant, request
CDs conference packs from Canonical, handle (re-)approval procedures,
and some other things like that.

There is some additional info here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamContact

PS: of course I will remain active as a volunteer in ubuntu-be where I
think it's useful!

[ubuntu-cloud] [BETA] Vagrant Cloud Image availability

2013-01-16 Thread Ben Howard
All,

We are pleased to announce the availability of beta Vagrant[1] Cloud
Images. These images have been customized to work with the Vagrant
development environment, and are based on the Ubuntu Cloud Images. As
such, these are vanilla images. They do, however, have the Virtualbox
guest additions found in the Universe archive.

For those who use Vagrant, your feedback is essential. Please feel free
to email me or the list any feedback, questions or concerns.

The images are approximately 256M in size, and are configured for 512MB
of RAM. They use a custom cloud-init user-data to drive the first boot.
And of course, they have the vagrant user with vagrant insecure SSH key
pre-installed. Right now we have published the 12.10 (Quetzal Quantal)
[2] and the 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) development release [3] daily
images. In the next few days the 12.04.2 (Precise Pangolin) daily will
be published. During the beta period, we will not be promoting any of
the Vagrant boxes with the regular releases of the Ubuntu Cloud Images
and will only publish the daily image builds; after the beta period we
these images will be promoted with the releases.

Thanks,
Ben

I'm seeing the same compilation errors with a fresh and up to date
installation of RR x64.

[Bug 1007273] Re: autofs does not start automatically after reboot

2013-01-16 Thread Andreas Greve
If the automounter daemon starts before the ypbind daemon is ready to
answer queries than the automounter does not work for nfs mounts
depending on nis (other mount types not tested), even if the ypbind
daemon later gets ready.

There exists a race condition in ubuntu 12.04 between autofs.conf and
ypbind.conf which leads to the above described problem.

The reason for that is that ypbind.conf sometimes lies about the state
of the ypbind daemon. The post-start script in ypbind.conf terminates
after 5 tries ( about 5 sec.) to contact the nis-server or when ypbind
respawns and change its state to running. Upstart than kills the
dedicated wait-for-state job. Now autofs.conf starts the automounter
daemon but the ypbind daemon is not ready to work and the automounter
does not work for nfs automounts too. I have to restart the automounter
daemon manualy (stop autofs; start autofs) after the ypbind daemon is
working to get nfs automounts working.

I solve the problem by changing ypbind.conf so that the test loop in
post-start script only terminates when ypwhich is working.

Additional I add a parameter TIMEOUT=300 to the exec wait-for-state call
in start-ypbind.conf because the default default timeout of 30 sec is to short
for my network and leads to the above described problem.
OK the 5min time out is not a 100% resolution. For a 100% resolution of the
race condition I have to set the parameter WAIT_FOREVER=T.

[Blueprint servercloud-r-juju-charm-testing] Juju Charm Testing

2013-01-16 Thread Antonio Rosales
Blueprint changed by Antonio Rosales:

Whiteboard changed:
  Discussion:
   *Bug submission on charm failure.
*Define a process around how charm maintainers respond to test failures and
subsequent bugs. Can a user run a manual test and submit the test back to the
bug report to update testing status to green.
*Enable Autocharm tester to be more resilient against provider failures, and
Jenkins usage.
simulate provider failure, and be able to recover: $ juju ssh MACHINE
sudo shutdown now
   * Define WIs to execute auto charm testing on Go.
   * Continuous Integration (also will help with gating on charm commits)
   * Juju Testing Blogging
   * Juju testing communication to Juju lists.
+ * Work on integrating/fixing Charm runner (graph testing/ dependency/env set
up testing).

[Bug 1081212] Re: The address of the API in pserv.conf (tftp/generator) is http://localhost/MAAS/api/1.0/pxeconfig/

2013-01-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package maas - 1.2+bzr1349+dfsg-0ubuntu1

---
maas (1.2+bzr1349+dfsg-0ubuntu1) raring; urgency=low

  * New upstream bugfix release. Fixes:
- The DNS configuration is not created if maas-dns is installed after
the DNS config has been set up (LP: #1085865).
- IPMI detection ends up with power_address of 0.0.0.0 (LP: #1064224)
- Main page slow to load with many nodes (LP: #1066775)
- maas-cluster-controller doesn't have images for
  provisioning (LP: #1068843)
- Filestorage is unique to each appserver instance (LP: #1069734)
- import_pxe_files does not include quantal (LP: #1069850)
- maas-cli nodes new incomplete documentation (LP: #1070522)
- DNS forward zone ends up with nonsensical entries (LP: #1070765)
- The hostname of a node can still be changed once the node is in
  use. (LP: #1070774)
- The zone name (attached to a cluster controller) can still be changed
when it contains in-use nodes and DNS is managed. (LP: #1070775)
- Duplicated prefix in the url used by the CLI (LP: #1075597)
- Not importing Quantal boot images (LP: #1077180)
- Nodes are deployed with wrong domain name. (LP: #1078744)
- src/maasserver/api.py calls request.data.getlist with a 'default'
parameter. That parameter is not supported by Django 1.3. (LP: #1080673)
- API calls that return a node leak private data (LP: #1034318)
- MAAS hostnames should be 5 easily disambiguated characters (LP: #1058998)
- URI in API description wrong when accessing machine via alternative
  interface. (LP: #1059645)
- Oops when renaming nodegroup w/o interface (LP: #1077075)
- Error in log when using 'Start node' button: MAASAPINotFound: No user
data available for this node. (LP: #1069603)

  [ Raphaël Badin ]
  * debian/maas-dns.postinst: Call write_dns_config (LP: #1085865).
  * debian/maas-dns.postinst: fix permissions and group ownership of
file /etc/bind/maas/named.conf.rndc.maas. (LP: #1066935)

  [ Julian Edwards ]
  * debian/maas-region-controller.install: Remove installation of maas-gc; it
is no longer required as upstream no longer stores files in the filesystem.
(LP: #1069734)
  * debian/maas-cluster-controller.postinst: Ensure that /etc/maas/pserv.yaml
is updated when reconfiguring. (LP: #1081212)

  [ Andres Rodriguez ]
  * debian/control:
- maas-cluster-controller Conflicts with tftpd-hpa (LP: #1076028)
- maas-dns: Conflicts with dnsmasq
- Drop Dependency on rabbitmq-server for maas-cluster-controller.
  (LP: #1072744)
- Add conflicts/replaces for maas-region-controller to
  maas-cluster-controller.
  * debian/maas-cluster-controller.config: If URL has been detected, add
/MAAS if it doesn't contain it. This helps upgrades from versions where
DEFAULT_MAAS_URL didn't use /MAAS.
  * Install maas-import-pxe-files and related files with
maas-cluster-controller, as well as configure tgtd, as
maas-region-controller no longer stores images. Thanks to Jeroen
Vermuelen.

  [ Gavin Panella ]
  * debian/extras/99-maas: squashfs image download is no longer needed.
  * debian/maas-cluster-controller.install: maas-import-squashfs and its
configuration file are no longer part of upstream.

  [ Jeroen Vermeulen ]
  * debian/maas-cluster-controller.maas-pserv.upstart: Source maas_cluster.conf
before starting pserv (tftpd) process.
  * debian/maas-cluster-controller.postinst: Duplicate CLUSTER_UUID setting
to maas_cluster.conf.
