I'm creating images of actions in setting up various items for a training document using Shutter on 12.04 I can add graphics such as arrows etc to the image, but the Text option doesn't seem to work. Ubuntu Studio 12.04.2 x86 live images missing
Hello all. I wanted to test some 12.04.2 live images, since the release is coming up soon and I want to see if there are any problems. However, I discovered from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/precise/dvd/current/ that the live images for x86 is missing. I also found the problem has been persisting, at least from 13/1/2013. There are no ISO build error messages sent to ubuntu-studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com these days, so I wonder what happened to the images. Release team members, please check what happened to the images. Re: Ubuntu Studio 12.04.2 x86 live images missing
That might be a bigger problem for us, since Ubuntu Studio uses a -lowlatency kernel, and we don't have a linux-lts-quantal-lowlatency kernel (unless Kaj Ailomaa wants to make one). Anyway please just include the 3.2 -lowlatency kernel for Ubuntu Studio first. This only effects i386 however as there is no PAE kernel on amd64. Mine is typically running 12.04 with a minimal LAMP server, backup server, general purpose SSH box, and VirtualBox. There are usually two VMs running: my work application dev server, which is heavily resource intensive (HDD, CPU, and RAM), and a build server running Jenkins and GitLab. I've had as many as 10 VMs running at once on it, but it gets slow under a lot of load - which is to be expected from only a 1.5 ghz dual core. I think it's a fantastic little server, and worth it,especiallyfor the price if you're after a good little all-rounder. It's even got an internal USB stick if you want to boot from a minimal USB (i.e. ESXi). If you need more RAM, you can put some 8GB sticks in to get it up to 16, but I haven't experimented as some chips don't work. If you need more CPU, get the N54L which is more expensive but has a 2.2ghz dual core. But if you need something for really CPU-heavy work, you might want something else. Re: 12.04 LTS: 64-bit desktop by default? - how about 13.04?
I think that Alan is right in his suggestion that we make amd64 images default before the next LTS. I think the hardware out there that won't support amd64 is small and like our desktop and applications we need to move forward and not stay in the past. On Jan 15, 2013 10:47 PM, Alan Bell alanb...@ubuntu.com wrote: 1 year on is it time to reevaluate the thinking around bug 585940? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-website-content/+bug/585940 we now have the added situation that the 32 bit installer does not work on EFI computers https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/102 Personally I think it is now very hard to find computers that won't do 64bit and is getting a lot easier to find computers that won't install the 32 bit image. It would probably be a good idea to get a 64 bit by default release out prior to the 14.04 LTS. Alan. On 16/04/12 07:03, Steve Langasek wrote: Hi folks, Back at last UDS in November, we discussed whether it was time to switch to presenting 64-bit images as the default image for desktop, like they already are for server, now that all new desktop hardware is 64-bit and multiarch is a reality. There was a rough consensus at UDS that the blockers were solved, but that the question should be taken to ubuntu-devel to gather more input. That input-gathering is happening much later than intended, but here we are now. The blueprint at https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/foundations-p-64bit-by-default includes links to some data gathered by the inimitable Colin King, showing that in terms of performance, there are both pros and cons for switching to amd64: memory consumption goes up, and therefore power consumption goes up if the system is making more use of swap, but on the other side, most CPU-bound operations will be faster on amd64. So there is no clear performance argument for preferring one over the other. Where multiarch is concerned, we've made good progress on library coverage; over 400 library packages are multiarch coinstallable in 12.04, including most of the usual suspects in the desktop stack, and indeed there are two packages in the partner repository now that are available only as i386 packages installable using multiarch, instead of using ia32-libs which is now just a compatibility wrapper package. So from what I've seen compatibility with 32-bit binary software is in pretty good shape as well. Are there problems that we've overlooked with regards to shipping 64-bit by default on the desktop, or is it reasonable to make this switch for 12.04 LTS? Is there 32-bit binary software that you know about which is not yet supported on amd64 via multiarch, and ought to be before we consider making 64-bit the default? Note that we're talking about three changes here: - Changing the default download link on ubuntu.com to point to 64-bit desktop images - Changing the pressed CDs distributed by Canonical to be 64-bit instead of 32-bit - Changing the architecture used for preformatted USB disks sold in the Canonical shop In general, if people can think of reasons not to switch to 64-bit for one of these, those arguments would apply to the other; so if we think we're ready for a switch, that switch should be applied across the board. And regardless of which we decide to use as the default, both of amd64 and i386 will continue to be supported architectures for the length of 12.04 LTS and will remain available for download.
[Ubuntu-be] ubuntu-be locoteam contact vacancy
Hello all, In the near future I would like to step down as Ubuntu-be locoteam contact, so that means there is a vacancy open for that job. I spoke with some people about this before, and I think at least 2 people expressed an interest to take the job, but of course others can be candidates too. Being the locoteam contact isn't a lot of work, but requires that you follow some mailing lists forward info if it seems relevant, request CDs conference packs from Canonical, handle (re-)approval procedures, and some other things like that. [ubuntu-cloud] [BETA] Vagrant Cloud Image availability
All, We are pleased to announce the availability of beta Vagrant[1] Cloud Images. These images have been customized to work with the Vagrant development environment, and are based on the Ubuntu Cloud Images. As such, these are vanilla images. They do, however, have the Virtualbox guest additions found in the Universe archive. For those who use Vagrant, your feedback is essential. Please feel free to email me or the list any feedback, questions or concerns. The images are approximately 256M in size, and are configured for 512MB of RAM. They use a custom cloud-init user-data to drive the first boot. And of course, they have the vagrant user with vagrant insecure SSH key pre-installed. Right now we have published the 12.10 (Quetzal Quantal) [2] and the 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) development release [3] daily images. In the next few days the 12.04.2 (Precise Pangolin) daily will be published. During the beta period, we will not be promoting any of the Vagrant boxes with the regular releases of the Ubuntu Cloud Images and will only publish the daily image builds; after the beta period we these images will be promoted with the releases. [Bug 1007273] Re: autofs does not start automatically after reboot
If the automounter daemon starts before the ypbind daemon is ready to answer queries than the automounter does not work for nfs mounts depending on nis (other mount types not tested), even if the ypbind daemon later gets ready. There exists a race condition in ubuntu 12.04 between autofs.conf and ypbind.conf which leads to the above described problem. The reason for that is that ypbind.conf sometimes lies about the state of the ypbind daemon. The post-start script in ypbind.conf terminates after 5 tries ( about 5 sec.) to contact the nis-server or when ypbind respawns and change its state to running. Upstart than kills the dedicated wait-for-state job. Now autofs.conf starts the automounter daemon but the ypbind daemon is not ready to work and the automounter does not work for nfs automounts too. I have to restart the automounter daemon manualy (stop autofs; start autofs) after the ypbind daemon is working to get nfs automounts working. I solve the problem by changing ypbind.conf so that the test loop in post-start script only terminates when ypwhich is working. Additional I add a parameter TIMEOUT=300 to the exec wait-for-state call in start-ypbind.conf because the default default timeout of 30 sec is to short for my network and leads to the above described problem. OK the 5min time out is not a 100% resolution. For a 100% resolution of the race condition I have to set the parameter WAIT_FOREVER=T. autofs.conf: ---vvv snip -- descriptionNIS binding process authorSteve Langasek steve.langa...@canonical.com # Patterned after the statd.conf job in nfs-common. start on (started portmap ON_BOOT= or (started portmap ON_BOOT=y and ((filesystem and static-network-up) or failsafe-boot))) stop on stopping portmap or runlevel [!2345] expect daemon respawn respawn limit 3 250 pre-start script NISSERVER=false [ -f /usr/sbin/ypbind ] [ -f /etc/defaultdomain ] || { stop; exit 0; } [ -f /etc/default/nis ] . /etc/default/nis oname=$(domainname) nname=$(cat /etc/defaultdomain) if [ $oname != $nname ]; then echo Setting NIS domainname to: $nname domainname $nname fi case $NISSERVER in master|slave|[Yy]*) ;; *) case $NISCLIENT in false|[nN]*) { stop; exit 0; } ;; esac ;; esac if [ $NISSERVER != false ]; then start wait-for-state WAIT_FOR=ypserv WAITER=ypbind WAIT_STATE=running /dev/null fi end script script [ -f /etc/default/nis ] . /etc/default/nis BROADCAST=-broadcast while read arg junk ; do case $arg in ypserver|domain) BROADCAST= ;; esac done /etc/yp.conf exec ypbind $BROADCAST $YPBINDARGS end script post-start script # Give ypbind time to finish starting up, so that jobs depending on # it are actually able to use the maps echo -n Binding to YP server bound= #for i in 1 2 3 4 5 while [ -z ${bound} ] do echo -n . #if status ypbind | grep -q start/respawn; then ## something killed ypbind; short-circuit here instead ## of continuing to try to call ypwhich, since that ## can take more than a minute. #break #fi if [ $(ypwhich 2/dev/null) != ]; then bound=1 break fi sleep 3 done if [ $bound ]; then echo done echo $(date) ypbind is running sleep 5 #else #echo backgrounded fi end script ---^^^ snip ^^^--- start-ypbind.conf: ---vvv snip -- descriptionblock processes that need ypbind authorSteve Langasek steve.langa...@canonical.com instance $JOB env JOB= start on (starting autofs or starting am-utils or starting gdm or starting lightdm or starting atd) task exec start wait-for-state WAITER=$JOB WAIT_FOR=ypbind WAIT_STATE=running TIMEOUT=300 ---^^^ snip ^^^-- -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to autofs5 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007273 Title: autofs does not start automatically after reboot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/autofs5/+bug/1007273/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
