[ubuntu-art] Improving Access to Themes -- Helping Users Find What They Want
Hello everyone, This message is about finding a practical solution for users to find the themes they need and thereby take advantage of the abundance of contributed artwork. I came across this problem when I updated to (Ed)ubuntu 12.4: By using the normal settings programs to configure the desktop, I could only see four themes to select from, two of which were high-contrast themes and the other two being Ubuntu themes with orange activation colors. As I couldn't find a better solution then, I went to tamper with the color settings of GTK and, after some late evenings' work, managed to eradicate the oranges and bring about a satisfying look feel. Having thought it over, I think the simplest way to help users find different themes would be putting a good set of themes into the Ubuntu Software Centre. In this 12.4 version I'm using, Ubuntu Software Centre has a category named something like Themes and Customizations (I'm using a translated version so I don't know the exact name) but there were no themes or themepacks to be found there. I hope that the decision-makers of Ubuntu will acknowledge the need for a rich selection of themes made readily available. Better customizability would probably help people stay with Ubuntu rather than switch to other official or unofficial Ubuntu variants. (As I have indicated, this writing is based on the situation with Ubuntu/Edubuntu 12.4. Please pardon me if the problem has already been improved for 12.10.) [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu quickly ebook template
Just thought I'd drop you an update - I posted on the mailing list asking for recommendations for HTML WYSIWYG editors - I was working on a quickly template for ebooks - an I managed to get the code onto launchpad this evening. https://launchpad.net/quickly-ubuntu-ebook There's still some work to do with it - mainly to do with sharing source, but it has been a great experience so far. Getting it into launchpad was more complicated but I'm happy it's there. My hope is that people will be able to use this template to create ebooks and that we will benefit from the benefits of the ubuntu and linux packaging system. Content Packaging is something I feel passionately about - and I gave a talk about content packaging at oggcamp11 about packaging Linux Reality back catalogue in a PPA. Anyway - it's getting late here ... Thanks everyone. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Update on the autopilot tests for this week. The good news is thanks to some help, the project has proper packaging now. The bad news is I've been waiting on the packages to land in the ppa -- I'm not sure what happened or where they ended up, but I'm trying to track it down.. Re: Ubuntu Studio 12.04.2 x86 live images missing
Is it perhaps because in debian-cd BACKPORT_KERNEL is defined as quantal for precise? It seems that causes the kernel that's looked for to be generic. If the flavour doesn't have the LTS backport kernel included it's still using the generic-pae kernel though. This only effects i386 however as there is no PAE kernel on amd64. Mythbuntu should be getting the backport kernel and Quantal X stack in the next build or two as cjwatson just added support for the backport kernel to livecd-rootfs yesterday. If the other flavours also want the backport kernel and Quantal X stack, livecd-rootfs should be changed for them too. I think something like this should be added to debian-cd for any flavours opting into the backport kernel to unbreak the i386 builds otherwise: === modified file 'CONF.sh' --- CONF.sh 2012-12-06 13:27:43 + +++ CONF.sh 2013-01-16 16:15:25 + @@ -185,7 +185,10 @@ ;; esac # Note that this is singular, unlike lucid; we only ship a single kernel. -export BACKPORT_KERNEL=quantal +case $PROJECT in + ubuntu|ubuntu-server|edubuntu*|mythbuntu) +export BACKPORT_KERNEL=quantal +;; export OFFICIAL=Release ;; quantal) On Wed, Jan 16, 2013 at 10:01 AM, Mario Limonciello supe...@ubuntu.comwrote: Same thing appears to be happening with Mythbuntu images too. http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/mythbuntu/precise/daily-live/20130115/ Error is: mv: cannot stat `/srv/cdimage.ubuntu.com/scratch/mythbuntu/precise/daily-live/tmp/precise-i386/CD1/casper/filesystem.kernel-generic': No such file or directory http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/cd-build-logs/mythbuntu/precise/daily-live-20130115.log On Wed, Jan 16, 2013 at 8:56 AM, Ho Wan Chan smartbo...@gmail.com wrote: Hello all. Re: Do we need a sound recorder in the default install?
On 01/14/2013 01:24 PM, Iain Lane wrote: Hey, In the course of working towards porting our default desktop to using GStreamer 1.0, one of the last holdouts is the venerable gnome-media package, also known as Sound Recorder. I discovered from reading around on the web that the maintainer thinks it's a dead project. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679381 and (linked from this bug) that there is a more GNOME3-ish rewrite in progress (which unfortunately doesn't use gstreamer-1.0 yet, but as it doesn't do as many things as gnome-media [and uses Vala], porting should be easier. Bindings do exist now). http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnome.multimedia/1893 I think we should remove gnome-media from the default install. In addition to not being ported and being EOLed upstrem, it seems to be quite crashy now. There are some bad reviews on the software centre too; I don't think it's providing a good experience to our users notwithstanding the lack of a finished/working gst-1.0 port. If we do do this, should we replace it with another microphone recording application? Is this a usecase that we think is important for the default install? gnome-sound-recorder (the rewrite) would require some engineering commitment to port to 1.0 and resolve bugs (for example it segfaults here as soon as I click 'record' ;-)). Unless someone knows of another suitable lightweight recording app. FWIW, I don't think we need a lightweight recording app on the default install. It's just not a common enough use case. As for dropping it completely, I'm less sure - it'd still be nice to be able to do: Bug reporter: hey, when I record from my mic, it sounds like a rubber ball in a dishwasher Triager: Ok, please record a sample and attach to the bug. Just install... At that point, it would be good to have something with a GUI, and that goes through gstreamer, or at least PulseAudio, when it records. The two that comes to my mind are audacity (not lightweight) and qarecord (unmaintained). Both are, IIRC, connecting either directly to alsa, or using the alsa-plugin layer to connect to PulseAudio. -- David Henningsson, Canonical Ltd. https://launchpad.net/~diwic -- ubuntu-desktop mailing list ubuntu-desktop@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-desktop

Re: 12.04 LTS: 64-bit desktop by default? - how about 13.04?
another consideration is that the computers that don't do 64bit are less likely to have enough 3d acceleration to run unity in hardware OpenGL so are more likely to fall back to llvmpipe and they are not going to like that at all on an elderly CPU. I doubt we run well at all on anything that can't do 64bit.

[Bug 1004162] [NEW] Samba won't change from wired to wireless NIC in same session
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Home network consists of: main - this PC is wired to the router @ 192.168.1.2. Dual boots Win 7 Xubuntu 12.04. laptop-wired - this is a Lenovo T60 on 192.168.1.3 Dual boots Win 7 and Xubuntu 12.04. This IP belongs to the wired NIC. laptop-wireless - this is the same Lenovo T60 with the wireless NIC on 192.168.1.4. Android phone - sees and connects to all shares... it doesn't care. So here's the problem: I've got the laptop and main PC sharing folders just fine. Windows shares with Linux and vice-versa, regardless of which computer is booted into which OS - as long as the laptop is plugged into LAN via the wired NIC. The minute I un-plug it, the laptop reverts to the wireless NIC and has access to the router and full internet access, but it cannot connect to the shares on main regardless of which OS is current running on main. As an experiment, I unplugged the laptop and rebooted it. Now it connects to the shares on main just fine. If I plug it in, it directs all traffic thru the wired NIC (I can tell by the icon in the Xubuntu taskbar) and all is well. I then unplug the wired NIC and the wireless NIC is able to connect to the same shares just fine. Therefore, it seems that the only time I have a problem is if the laptop is initially booted with the wired NIC... I then diconnect and it then reverts to the wireless NIC... bit it can no longer access shares on main. However, if I boot the laptop using only the wireless NIC (unplugged) it has no problem sharing regardless of which NIC is currently in use. To summarize, if the laptop is initially connected via the wired NIC and then is unplugged, it has no problem going to the wireless NIC for internet access through the router. However, it cannot access shares on the main pc (which is always wired). But if I do this the other way around... boot with it unplugged... the wireless NIC can access the shares. I can then plug in the wired NIC and still access shares. I can also unplug and go back to the wireless NIC and still access shares. This seems to be the only way to guarantee that the laptop can access the shares whether it's using the wired or wireless NIC: boot it with only the wireless NIC (unplugged). ** Affects: samba (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: bot-comment -- Samba won't change from wired to wireless NIC in same session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1004162 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in Ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1004162] Re: Samba won't change from wired to wireless NIC in same session
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in samba. When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu- bug' and the name of the package affected. [Bug 1004162] Re: Samba won't change from wired to wireless NIC in same session
Thank you for your report. Please can you specify exactly what you mean by ...it can no longer access shares on main.? What method are you using to access shares? What happens when it works, and what happens when it doesn't? If you aren't already, then please also use smbclient to try and access shares (both with -L to see if shares are available, and //server/sharename to see if you can connect), and report the results. Please also attach the output of ip addr and ip route in both the working and non-working wireless situations. Finally, please use tcpdump and report the source IP address being used (or being attempted to be used) to access your share in both the working and non-working wireless situations. Once you have reported the answers to these questions, please change the bug status back to New. ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1004162 Title: Samba won't change from wired to wireless NIC in same session To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1004162/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1100491] Re: [SRU] apt_sources broken in 0.6.3-0ubuntu1.3 [regression]
I'm attaching a user-data file that I've built to demonstrate this issue, and that it is resolved. Simply: * launch an instance with the provided user-data * ssh to instance. wait for /home/ubuntu/version/ directory to contain 'cloud-init-output.log', and then reboot On ssh in, you'll see a directory named for the cloud-init version that was present on boot. Once that directory has 'cloud-init.log' in it, then you can reboot. The next boot should have the next version of cloud-init in it (ie, if instance had 0.6.3-0ubuntu1.1, then 0.6.3-0ubuntu1.3 should be installed. If 0.6.3-0ubuntu1.3 was there , then -proposed should have been installed). Just looking at the associated logs will show if there as an error. I've verified using a daily image, that had 0.6.3-0ubuntu1.3 in it. [Bug 1100843] [NEW] Live Migration Causes Performance Issues
Public bug reported: I have 2 physical hosts running Ubuntu Precise. With 1.0+noroms- 0ubuntu14.7 and qemu-kvm 1.2.0+noroms-0ubuntu7 (source from quantal, built for Precise with pbuilder.) I attempted to build qemu-1.3.0 debs from source to test, but libvirt seems to have an issue with it that I haven't been able to track down yet. I'm seeing a performance degradation after live migration on Precise, but not Lucid. These hosts are managed by libvirt (tested both 0.9.8-2ubuntu17 and 1.0.0-0ubuntu4) in conjunction with OpenNebula. I don't seem to have this problem with lucid guests (running a number of standard kernels, 3.2.5 mainline and backported linux- image-3.2.0-35-generic as well.) I first noticed this problem with phoronix doing compilation tests, and then tried lmbench where even simple calls experience performance degradation. I've attempted to post to the kvm mailing list, but so far the only suggestion was it may be related to transparent hugepages not being used after migration, but this didn't pan out.
Louche louche... Just a small update: Tried kernel 3.7.1, 3.7.2 and 3.8.0-rc3, all with the same result. [Bug 1022606] Re: Black screen with mouse pointer after booting Ubuntu using monitor with 1680x1050 resolution
I have this problem with Ubuntu Raring on the Pandaboard ES. Even having a 1920x1080 monitor I need to do the console trick. [Bug 1080947] Re: damageScreen() in UnityScreen::nuxDamageCompiz() severely hurts Unity performance
I am from bug 1100456 and I have to say that it does not look like unity-only issue. Today I half-upgraded to the latest and greatest packages and got unityshell failing to start (and compiz depending on compiz-core that is not yet pushed to the archives) so I got a compiz- only session. Running http://paste.ubuntu.com/1538829/ still tells me that any screen redraw triggers a full-screen XDamage event even when no unityshell is running.
