[Ubuntu-ch] HiDPI

2014-01-24 Thread Marcus Moeller

Hi all,

does one of you already own a HiDPI machine (e.g. 3200x1800 on 13.1)?

From what I see, it is not really possible to use this resolution with
Unity (maybe Unity Next). This might be really fatal if it's not fixed
for 14.04 as till the end of the year nearly all new machines will have
these high resolutions.

[ubuntu-uk] Problem with Mail set up in Ubuntu 13.10

2014-01-24 Thread Gordon Burgess-Parker
I use a Hosted Exchange Email account (Office 365) and am having very odd
problems connecting both in Thunderbird and Evolution.
If I try to set up IMAP email in both Tbird and Evolution, it just goes into a
circle of an error message saying Cannot connect - is the User name and
Password correct? which of course they are.
IMAP access works perfectly well in Thunderbird on Windows 8.1 so the server
has IMAP set up OK.
Trying to use ExQuilla in TBird with EWS, the autodiscovery works fine, but it
then hangs and finally fails on testing URL.

Other IMAP mail accounts work perfectly well in both Tbird and Evolution, so
I'm at a loss as to why this particular IMAP account (and/or EWS via ExQuilla)
doesn't work.
Anyone seen this and is there a solution?

Re: Work-flow prototype

2014-01-24 Thread Alberto Salvia Novella

Work-flow illustrates *both *pile importance and typical bug flow:

 * Bug *flow* begins with step 1, and ends with step 5.
 * But pile *importance* is the opposite: the highest importance is for
step 5, and the lowest is for step 1.

Although people can *freely choose* where to contribute:

 * They're *clearly shown* where help is more needed.
 * They're *asked to stop* working when next step is congested.

*So* work-flow:

 * First *liberates congestion* at the end of the flow, so previous
   steps begin to move too.
 * Is *visual* how work is flowing, so it's also easy to improve it and
   choose where to work.
 * Creates value *constantly* to the Ubuntu OS, so also constant
improvements in users' satisfaction and constant returns to the project.
 * Takes advantage of *every piece of work* done, and makes work much
more *easier to understand*. So users will be much more prone to help.
 * Changes the need to check for errors in the hole report to checking
only if previous step was okay, making the process zero-defects
   and*mistake resistant*.
 * Since errors in bug handling are not discovered in latter steps, but
immediately in next step, this also makes the management to
   *accelerate*.

And for *warranting* this work-flow will respond well to any situation,
I designed it testing over the Ubuntu project, not the One Hundred
Papercuts project only. So only step 1 is specific to papercuts management.

On the other hand, it's very probable I'll *divide* step 4 (fix a
papercut) into more steps. So please subscribe
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/One%20Hundred%20Papercuts/Work-flow?action=subscribe
to the page and you'll receive notifications when work-flow is changed.

Thank you 

Just open one of the lists

Ran autopkgtests with python3.4 as default

2014-01-24 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello all,

Matthias asked me to run all our available autopkgtests with python3.4
as default Python 3 (using the PPA [1]), to see the fallout. These
should be fixed before we consider making 3.4 the default Python3
version. The full raw logs are at [2], sorted into pass/ and fail/.

I went through the failures and converted them to LP bugs, so that
they can be tracked/assigned/etc:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=python3.4

Please note that some autopkgtests fail due to other reasons (many of
them have never succeeded at all). Also, this is only the list of 3.3
→ 3.4 regressions that we can detect automatically; of course we have
a lot more Python packages and code in the archive which isn't covered
by autopkgtest.

Running our autopkgtests in LXC/on armhf

2014-01-24 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello all,

I recently set up some Calxeda ARM nodes that we got for QA and
improved autopkgtest enough so that we can efficiently and robustly
run autopkgtests using the LXC runner [1]. As a first smoketest I run
all our 310 existing autopkgtests except linux and libreoffice on
them.

I wanted to see whether the four servers, LXC, and autopkgtest are
robust enough, and indeed they survived that. That's a major
improvement from our first attempt to run them on Panda boards, which
fell over more often than not.

I set that off yesterday evening, and by today noon the last
test has finished. Two of the nodes were done this morning already,
but two others had the bad luck to catch tests which hung
indefinitely and thus only timed out after 4 hours.

The full raw logs are at [2]. I went through all failures of packages
which don't fail in our production run with Qemu/KVM [3] and
categorized/summarized them, notes are at [4].

Summary
---
  * 48 tests out of the 310 tests failed which don't fail with KVM on x86.

  * 34 failures happen on amd64 with LXC as well, with the same error.
I. e. they don't fail because of ARM, but because the test only
runs in a container and not in a full VM. (Note, we don't
currently have a kvm-like qemu on ARM, so we have to use LXC there)

  * 14 failures are ARM specific, i. e. they succeed on x86/LXC.

  * 2 packages fail which also fail on x86/LXC, but they have
additional errors.

So only 16 packages would need fixing to get their autopkgtests up to
par with x86. That's a lot less than I initially feared.

CI integration
--
We want to put this into production soon. To avoid blocking on LXC or
ARM/LXC specific failures, we will teach britney to only consider an
autopkgtest a failure if that test ever succeeded. In fact we should
do this for all architectures, as unfortunately 80% of the new
autopkgtests that we get fail (they hardly ever get tested in a proper
isolated environment by uploaders unfortunately).

Fixing tests

In some cases tests that work in qemu fail in LXC because the test
tries to do kernel-level things like loading modules, accessing
cgroups, etc. These tests just can't run in LXC, and there is little
that we can do about it. We'll just continue running them in Qemu on
x86 and don't run them on ARM.

But in quite a lot of cases this is because the autopkgtest LXC runner
is stricter than the null runner that we are currently using; for
example, if your test has Restrictions: build-needed then in Qemu
your test still has all the build dependencies installed, but the LXC
runner resets the testbed between build and test; so your
debian/tests/control needs to specify all runtime Depends:. (Note that
you can use @builddeps@ in cases where this is appropriate)

Fixing tests to work in LXC is greatly appreciated, so if you want
your package to always work on ARM, and want dependencies that break
your package be held in -proposed instead of landing and breaking your
package, please make sure that you have a working LXC autopkgtest.

Locally running tests in LXC

Dependencies:

$ sudo apt-get install lxc autopkgtest

Create an LXC container:

  $ sudo lxc-create -t ubuntu-cloud -n trusty-cloud  -- -r trusty

(You can use any other name with -n, of course)

Run tests from package pkgname in the archive:

  $ sudo adt-run pkgname --- adt-virt-lxc --ephemeral trusty-cloud

Run locally fixed tests for package pkgname with the packages from
the archive:

  $ cd pkgname-1.1/
  $ # fix debian/tests/
  $ sudo adt-run -B --unbuilt-tree=. --- adt-virt-lxc --ephemeral trusty-cloud

The difference between --built-tree and --unbuilt-tree only matters
if your test has Restrictions: build-needed; then, use
whichever state your tree is in.

Build locally fixed package, install its built debs for the test, and
run fixed tests from local source tree:

  $ cd pkgname-1.1/
  $ # fix whatever
  $ sudo adt-run --unbuilt-tree=. --- adt-virt-lxc --ephemeral trusty-cloud

Note that you can use the -o /tmp/output-dir option to adt-run if
you want to put the autopkgtest logs into a directory.

Let me know if you have any question.

Thanks, and happy weekend!

Martin

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Ubuntu no Dell Inspirion 15R

2014-01-24 Thread Ricardo Rafante

Editar o grub:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

procure por GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT e coloque conforme abaixo:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash pcie_aspm=force radeon.nomodeset=1
depois atualize o grub

sudo update-grub

depois instale o catalyst, neste site mostra o passo a passo somente assim
consegui resolver o meu problema com o driver de video.

 Hello

Please excuse me if this question has been asked before on this
 mailinglist, I'm a new User.

I wanted to know, that does UbuntuGnome come with accessibility options
 for installation like ubuntu does?
In this case, speech-guided installation, for visually impaired. In
ubuntu, at the boot screen, hitting control+S fires up the speech
guided installation, so blind and visually impaired users can install
the system as well. then after the installation, gnome-orca (the
 screenreader), will automaticly run.

I'm really interested to run ubuntu gnome, as Unity is extremely laggy
 when navigating with orca
Gnome-orca has been improved a lot in gnome 3.8 as well, that's also
one of the reasons that i'm eager to install this distro.

 Cheers
 Thanks.

 --

It does, but I don't think that it's as simple as pressing CTRL + S.
When I started the installation from a VM, I had to select a language
first, and then press F5 for accessibility options. This gives you a
list that you select from with the arrow keys. I've attached a
screenshot of the list. (Obviously if you're visually impaired I
understand that this doesn't help, but if you're not I thought I should
be as complete as possible.)
Good luck, and keep us posted if you try the install and learn
more. I would like to add info about this to our wiki pages.
Someone else should also test this in case I'm missing something. :)

Re: Does ubuntu-gnome have accessibility support for, installation?

2014-01-24 Thread hadi remonion

Hello james

it seemed that ubuntuGnome uses the same installer as ubuntu does, and
since tim confirmed it last night, i went for a vm install.

I did the vm settings and powered on the machine, and i waited for the
drum sound of ubuntu installation.

(it plays a drum sounds when the screen loads up)
i waited for 5 minutes, and it still didn't play the drum sound. so i
decided to press control+s, and immediately i got speech feedback. and
ScreenReader kicked in.
it was the screen which you can decide if you want to run ubuntu live or
press the install button.
I installed the system, and after system reboot ScreenReader automaticly
kicked in, and everything was setup already!

gnome-orca (which seems that was renamed to screenreader BTW) is
extremely speedy on gnome, (it comes with gnome)..

it is laggy on unity, and makes navigation hard in that desktop manager.
I expect more blind and visually impaired people coming toward
ubuntuGnome, as it installs ubuntu plus latest gnome without any hassles
or extra configurations, so i believe a wiki page that states that
ubuntuGnome comes with speech installation helps.

p.s it would be awesome if a sound could be played when the installation
screen comes up.

Cheers
Hadi

Re: Does ubuntu-gnome have accessibility support for, installation?

2014-01-24 Thread Ivan Ivanov
Yes, I accept the idea that accessibility options have to be promoted and
explained in the Wiki. Good! I think this should be a blueprint and we have
enough time to achieve this.

Ali is offline, but we can discuss this and the documentation team (where I am)
can do this.

Releasing new versions of Ubuntu GNOME in every 6 months will
prove the stability and productivity of our team.

6 Month releases in-line with Ubuntu Release schedule are one of the
requirements of being an officially recognized flavour.
LTS Releases are optional

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecognizedFlavors

Every advanced Linux user can install an old version of any Linux
distro and update kernel, software, desktop environment, etc. by
himself. And he can stay with this version as long as he wants (as
long as this distro is useful for him). But the 6-months cycle is
for all users who want to use Ubuntu: they are sure that in April
2014 there will be a download link for a stable and updated LTS
version of their favourite Ubuntu distro.

That's why every open-source project always needs new serious

I hadn't ever really thought of that... I think that
maybe the logic behind the LTS is that we should be
as official and stable as possible. If we don't do
the LTS, less people may feel comfortable using the
OS. If we do the LTS, people can still add the
latest version of GNOME if they want it ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/FAQ#Why_Ubuntu_GNOME_is_not_shipped_with_the_latest_version_of_GNOME.3F)

I hear what you're saying though. I think the
choice here is between being a more official distro
and being more of an experiment.

Well there are people such as myself who maintain a fairly
large number of computers and simply can't upgrade them
all every 6 months, thus LTS which means Long Term Support
is quite attractive. I currently have 51 computers running
  12.04.

Ultimately it will be up to Tim to decide if we can do an
LTS or not and I'm cool with that, I consider him our own
  personal SABDFL :^)

If we can do an LTS that would be great, but if we can't

serious team that can handle every release if there are enough serious team
members :P And my mail was some kind of motivation :)))

Yes, that is all true. I can add this:

Call it politics or philosophy. Every Ubuntu related project which pretends to
be an official distribution (flavour) has to follow the Ubuntu project concept
- new release in every 6 months, LTS release every two years, etc. Everything
depends on the manpower. Releasing new versions of Ubuntu GNOME in every 6
months will prove the stability and productivity of our team.

6 Month releases in-line with Ubuntu Release schedule are one of the
requirements of being an officially recognized flavour.

 LTS Releases are optional

   https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecognizedFlavors

Every advanced Linux user can install an old version of any Linux distro and
update kernel, software, desktop environment, etc. by himself. And he can stay
with this version as long as he wants (as long as this distro is useful for
him). But the 6-months cycle is for all users who want to use Ubuntu: they are
sure that in April 2014 there will be a download link for a stable and updated
LTS version of their favourite Ubuntu distro.

That's why every open-source project always needs new serious contributors,
testers, etc.

I hope the things will go in the right direction and in April 2014 we will be
loving our Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 LTS.

I have a significant number of computers/vms, enough that I maintain a local

However, I wonder, aside from the DE, since we just pull from Ubuntu
Main, the core still receives the updates to be on the level with Ubuntu Main
does it not?

Are you required by Ubuntu to create a LTS?

To me a LTS is not really high priority on this great Gnome distribution,
as the main reason for selecting Ubuntu GNOME is newest Gnome release.

I think people looking for a LTS will go for regular Ubuntu - what do you
think?

I hadn't ever really thought of that... I think that maybe the
logic behind the LTS is that we should be as official and stable as possible.
If we don't do the LTS, less people may feel comfortable using the OS.
If we do the LTS, people can still add the latest version of GNOME if they
want it (

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/FAQ#Why_Ubuntu_GNOME_is_not_shipped_with_the_latest_version_of_GNOME.3F

I hear what you're saying though.
I think the choice here is between being a more official distro and being more
of an experiment.

Well there are people such as myself who maintain a fairly large
number of computers and simply can't upgrade them all every 6 months, thus LTS
which means Long Term Support is quite attractive. I currently have 51
computers running 12.04.

Ultimately it will be up to Tim to decide if we can do an LTS or not and I'm
cool with that, I consider him our own personal SABDFL :^)

2014-01-24 Thread Gunther Stammwitz
Okay, this bug can be closed. my pardon.
It was caused because I had modified the user to vmail instead of amavis.
Root cause was that the user amavis didn't have +wx-Permission on vmail's
.spamassassin-directory.

Anyway: if ubuntu would have used the newer version of /usr/sbin
/amavisd-new-cronjob that debian provides in amavisd-new_2.7.1-2_all.deb
life would be much easier...

[Bug 1249708] Re: Missing neutron-ovs-cleanup service

2014-01-24 Thread George Shuklin
It should start on every compute and network node. It clear up all
strange artefacts saved by ovs-vsctl.

How to get 'strange artifacts':
On any working compute/network node with active networking on instances perform
any operations on ovs-vsctl, f.e.:
ovs-vsctl add-br just_empty_bridge
ovs-vsctl del-br just_empty_bridge

ovs will save all current tap/tun qr-* interfaces in br-int/br-ext
bridges and restore them on next boot inside own config, even if they
are not available at server start.

This will cause problems for existing instances during their startup.

neutron-ovs-cleanup should run during startup on all non-diskless nodes
to ensure nothing strange is exists in bridges prior fists
instance/agent start.

[Bug 1271857] Re: [MIR] ruby-rgen

2014-01-24 Thread Robie Basak
** Description changed:

- TBC
+ Availability: in universe, available on all architectures as an Arch:
+ all package.
+
+ Rationale: new dependency of puppet, which is in main.
+
+ Security:
+
+ No security history found.
+
+ No executables with suid, sgid or in /sbin or /usr/sbin. No daemons, so
+ no privileged ports. Puppet runs as root, but generally only speaks
+ securely to its own puppetmaster, rather than to untrusted endpoints.
+
+ Quality assurance:
+
+ ruby-rgen is a library and is made available as expected without any
+ configuration or documentation reading. No debconf questions. No long-
+ term outstanding bugs (or any distribution bugs filed at all). The
+ package is maintained by the Debian maintainer of puppet. No significant
+ issues on Debian PTS; just a minor standards-version bump required. No
+ exotic hardware involved. Test suite is run as part of the package
+ build. debian/watch file included.
+
+ UI standards: N/A (library only package)
+
+ Dependencies: only ruby, which is already in main.
+
+ Standards compliance:
+
+ The package appears FHS and Debian Policy compliant and uses the
+ debhelper sequencer for a very minimal debian/rules file. This looks
+ like a simple package to maintain and should simply remain synced with
+ Debian.
+
+ ~ubuntu-server is subscribed to package bugs.

[Bug 1272364] Re: needs to build a python 3.4 extension

2014-01-24 Thread Stéphane Graber
I don't really have time to look into this, however python3-lxc does
build fine with python3.4.

It should be possible to build the python3 bits with another configure
call + make -C src/python-lxc, however please note that the LXC
packaging must work with precise, quantal, raring, saucy and trusty, so
hardcoding 3.4 in there isn't an option.

Right, this is a quite well understood process. debian/rules ought to
iterate over py3versions -s, and in this case do the extra
multi-builds for everything but the default version (py3versions -d).

[Bug 1272508] [NEW] will postfix 2.11 be packaged in time for trusty’s freeze

2014-01-24 Thread James Cloos
Public bug reported:

It was released more than a week ago, and I see that the import freeze
is less than a fortnight away.

2.11’s benefits are significant enough that it SHOULD be included, even

Will it be?

[Bug 342096] Re: SD Card containing /home corrupted on resume

2014-01-24 Thread Łukasz
Dear Launchpad friends,
I have to confirm this bug.
In Ubuntu 12.04 LTS this issue is still NOT RESOLVED.
I tried to add some scripts to unmount sdcard before suspend, but system
couldn't mount it after resume.
The hard way for me is to compile kernel, but I don't want to mess up with my
distro.

It's very old problem, when we can except for a solution? I can help as
a beta tester if you wish.

Cheers,
Łukasz

[Bug 1248519] Re: 'search_opts' unexpected keyword argument for resource manager list()

commit 2f0863b7d4d20198f496534d5ffef85e68ff45fc
Author: Xiao Chen chenx...@cn.ibm.com
Date: Mon Jan 20 15:29:55 2014 +0800

Fix 'search_opts' unexpected keyword argument error

When executing 'encryption-type-create' command using resource
name, it will use the findall() in base.py, then error will
occur because list() in findall() used 'search_opts' argument
which list() in VolumeEncryptionTypeManager did not have. Some
other command like 'transfer-delete' met same issue.

This patch will add 'search_opts' argument in list() function
in child class to avoid the bug.

@Stéphane - I'm also not sure how to proceed. Would it be valid to: get
the new package on my system, use Startup Disk Creator to create an
ISO/USB installer, test with that installer (either on my live machine

[Bug 1269777] Re: [ Ubuntu 14.04 - Lenovo W510 - SSD Samsung 840 PRO 512GB] Sudden Read-Only Filesystem

2014-01-24 Thread Axel Pospischil

Fri, 24 Jan 2014 08:54:15 +0100
 08:54:15 up 1 day, 20:49, 4 users, load average: 0,90, 2,21, 1,61

Hi again,

as said in comment #50, I put a clone of the SSD, Seagate Momentus XT Hypbrid
into the laptop.
As you can see, the system is running without any problems: no NCQ warnings, no
problems after supspend, hibernation, docking.
And this this tlp enabled and ACPI powermanagement in the bios.

I also tested the SSD in a Thinkpad X201 yesterday evening which has the the
same chipset.
There I had exact the same problems!

I filed a question in lenovos forum and the answer is clear:
nothing but trouble with the Samsung 840 series with this Cipset!
People did not have trouble with the 830 series and capacities of 256 GB:

Story/td-p/1401955/highlight/false

The only drive which is guarantied by manufactor to run with the
Thinkpad W510 with a capacity of more than 256GB (!) - there is none of

CONCLUSION
--

I have to return the Samsung 840 Pro 512 GB (as I did with the Samsung
840 EVO) and have to state that it is not compatible with the Thinkpad
W510 and the Intel 5/3400 Chipset and the BIOS 6NET84WW (1.45 )
10/03/2012.

All efforts to get things running stable where - in the end - not
successfull.

Probably this bug report might help to fix things in future kernels or lenovo
will fix this.
Sorry that I can't wait until this will happen ;-)

Cheers, over and out.
Closing bug.

Hi JG!

Thanks for sharing. I wish I could test this, but I have left IBM in
March 2013. Although I recall, when tested, that this didn't make any
difference for me, and the error message was also different. The weird
part was, that Adobe Acrobat Reader worked well it was poppler failing.
I still think it is related to how poppler handles Postscript. Maybe it
lacks some functions...

[Bug 1271934] Re: 14.04 failed to complete install with the error The 'grub-efi-amd64-signed' package failed to install into /target/.

2014-01-24 Thread Iain Cuthbertson
The downloaded ISO was fine, it was the instillation media that was
corrupted.

Checking the install media before installing (option in GRUB) confirmed
that the original attempt had 17 files at fault.

Fixed by sending /dev/zero via dd to the USB memory stick for a few
seconds to kill the partition table, I was then able to use the Startup
Disk Creator.
