Re: mlocate - what is it good for?
Hi Brian, I personally use 'locate' all the time, and rarely use 'find' if 'locate' is available. The major problem I have with find is that it's slow. Even restricting the search space to a specific directory (as opposed to searching everything under "/") can be slow. For example, searching my home directory takes a while, due to the large number of Python virtual envs that I have. Sometimes searching a specific directory simply does not work with find due to the presence of symlinks. You have to wait for find to complete (which might take a while), realize that maybe symlinks are involved (which is not obvious) and re-run find with -L, hoping it will work. Searching from the root directory "/" with find is not just slow, but also clobbers the terminal with "Permission Denied" or "Operation Not Permitted" errors. You must remember to use 2>/dev/null (hoping that won't hide any useful errors). With locate instead you can search the entire filesystem and get your results in a few milliseconds, without thinking about edge cases. Also, if you want to always exclude certain filesystems or directories, with find you have to play with -prune or -xdev or similar, and repeat the same arguments every time. With locate, you can just edit one configuration file once and you're done. In my locate configuration I exclude things like my LXC/LXD containers: I never want results involving those. Those are the reasons why I wish locate was enabled everywhere, not just Ubuntu :-) Hope this helps! Re: TrueCrypt help!!
Hi Edmund, GPG is telling you that it does not know whether the signature is legit or not (that is: whether TrueCrypt authors really made it). The message "Good signature from TrueCrypt ..." does not mean anything in practice, because everyone can create a keypair, label it with whatever name/email they want, and sign whatever file they want. To make that warning go away, you should tell GPG that you trust TrueCypt's public key, but this is a complicated matter. If you want to have some degree of certainty that the signature is legit, make sure you downloaded it through HTTPS. This will ensure (up to a certain point) that the signature has not been compromised by a man-in-the-middle attack. -- ubuntu-server mailing list ubuntu-server@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server More info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam

I was almost sure that Wubi was no longer supported since Raring. Precisely, since the end of this thread on ubuntu-devel: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2013-April/036993.html (Intention to drop Wubi from 13.04 release) However, looking at {old-,}releases.ubuntu.com, it seems that *every* release of Ubuntu ships with Wubi, including Raring itself. Even https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide says that Wubi is an officially supported installer. Although that page asks you to download from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/wubi/ -- which is not up to date (it contains just the Raring installer). According to this old post on AskUbuntu from Dimitri John Ledkov: http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/7497/wubi-discussion-again-supported-here-on-ask-ubuntu-13-04-and-later/7596#7596 Primary function is to be a cd autolauncher for people who pop the cd into a Windows machine If one copies the wubi.exe off the cd, it will launch and offer Wubi based installation. Officially it is still supported Seems we have some bugs [1] including one fairly serious one [2] which causes the wrong version of Ubuntu to get installed. I was told wubi (installer) was to be replaced by a simpler wubi which is just a menu. This doesn't seem to have happened. If we don't plan on fixing these (new user) facing issues, is it time to retire wubi from the images? I'm neither an Ubuntu Developer nor a Wubi user, however I'd say that it doesn't make sense to ship Wubi if nobody looks at serious bugs and if modern versions of Windows are not supported. Also, looking at both AskUbuntu and Launchpad, I am under the impression that very few people are aware of the existence of Wubi nowadays (and I guess that this is because you have to copy wubi.exe off the CD to get it working). I bet that very few people would notice if Wubi (the installer) disappeared. Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Set up a wireless connection with WPA security and an unencrypted private key. 2. This could allow your security credentials to be compromised. Please select a password-protected private key. (You can password-protect your private key with openssl) This message is really uninformative and unhelpful for many reasons: * It does not tell me which program/key is the problem. Initially I though that the problem had to do with one of my SSH keys. I had to grep the message in /usr/bin in order to understand who was showing it. * It does not tell why exactly unencrypted keys are insecure. In fact, someone might say they aren't. * It does not tell how to encrypt them. You can password-protect your private key with openssl does not mean anything, even to a person who knows what OpenSSL is. I would like to make a suggestion to change it that would hopefully save others the same hassle. I wanted to debugging in Eclipse which required me to let Eclipse run gdb with sudo. However, for this to work, sudo must not ask for a password. So I've added the following entry in /etc/sudoers under the appropriate comment: # User privilege specification myuserALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/gdb Although the syntax is correct the entry was overridden by the 'admin' and 'sudo' group entries just a little further down, because my user was part of both the 'sudo' and 'admin' groups... # Members of the admin group may gain root privileges %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL # Allow members of group sudo to execute any command %sudo ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL This resulted in my 'NOPASSWD:' flag to have no effect. This is because sudoers has the oddity that it uses the last matched rule, not the first! I would like to suggest that the 'admin' and 'sudo' entries be moved just above the comment # User privilege specification. This would ensure that any user/group specific added by a user will override the 'admin' and 'sudo' entries. If this is not appropriate, maybe simply adding a comment to the file to just to remind people of this rule would be a great help. However, such a comment should be added just above/below the # User/Group privilege specification comments so its easy to spot. Actually, you are supposed to create a new file in /etc/sudoers.d for custom rules. You shouldn't edit /etc/sudoers directly; this will ensure that package upgrades can happen without asking you any question about the changes you made to that file. I also don't feel that this is a high priority bug since, so far, we do not recommend allowing unprivileged users to use containers. Agreed. Especially because (currently) it's fairly easy to escape from LXC when you have root access to the container. I don't believe it would be a serious loss of functionality to chmod 0700 /var/lib/lxc. ... So I think a regular update in trusty with SRUs to all previous releases is ok. [Bug 1244635] Re: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host
Hi Stéphane, I can see at least three ways of escaping. The first is using LXC through libvirt. I see that there's an Apparmor profile for usr.bin.lxc-start, but AFAIK libvirt does not use lxc-start. Also, libvirt does not load the lxc-containers profile (AFAIK). This is proven by the fact that `cat /sys/kernel/security/apparmor/profiles` does not fail when done from within my LXC+libvirt guest. Also, reading /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/lxc/container-base I see that there are many deny rules, but you are missing at least two: /sys/kernel/uevent_helper and /sys/class/mem/null/uevent. See http://blog.bofh.it/debian/id_413 for a way for escaping using these two files. Finally, while there are rules that deny read and writes to /sys, but there are no rules that deny me to e.g. `mount -t sysfs sysfs /tmp/sys` or bind-mount /sys to an another location. (I'm not sure about this point because, you know, I'm using libvirt and I cannot test.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244635 Title: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/1244635/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1244635] [NEW] setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: If I execute /var/lib/lxc/NAME/rootfs/usr/bin/sudo -i on the host system, it works exactly like /usr/bin/sudo -i. Now suppose that a user that has root access to the LXC container creates a flawed setuid executable. What happens is that now the host system is flawed too. For example, I can patch the container's sudo to skip the authentication checks and then use /var/lib/lxc/NAME/rootfs/usr/bin/sudo from the host to gain root privileges. This assumes that you have both root access to the container and unprivileged access to the host. However the point is: insecure filesystem policies in a container may be source of security holes on the host system. Of course, the same applies to capabilities too, not just the setuid/gid bits. A possible solution to this problem would be to chmod 0700 the /var/lib/lxc directory. However doing so you lose the ability to browse files on the container from the host. An alternative would be to tell Apparmor to deny the execution of every file contained in /var/lib/lxc. (Or at least, to deny the execution of setuid/gid/cap files, if that's possible.) ** Affects: lxc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244635 Title: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/1244635/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

From the upstream bug [https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=307589#c25]: evolution-exchange only supports the older Microsoft Exchange server versions 2000 and 2003. Thanks for your help making Ubuntu better. This bug was filed using an outdated version of libglib (yours is 2.36.0-1ubuntu1, latest is 2.36.0-1ubuntu2). This is the most probable reason why the retrace failed. Because the latest version of libglib may have fixed this bug, I'm invalidating it. [Bug 1165576] Re: geary crashed with SIGABRT in raise()
The problem is that Apport cannot build retraces for packages that are no longer in the archive, so the only way to obtain useful information is to let the crash happen again and let the user file a new bug report. By the way, glib2.0 was the only package I've checked. Probably there are other outdated packages, probably with some relevant patches. You can view all the versions of the packages the user is using in the Dependencies.txt attachment. I'm also attaching a diff between the user's versions and my own versions. [Bug 960288] Re: Notify OSD bubble sometimes appears as a single line of pixels
This program is caused by programs that send notifications with a null summary. I have fixed this bug in Geary and have done some research around this problem [1]: Giving a quick look to https://developer.gnome.org/notification-spec/ it seems that 'body' is optional and may not be supported by all notification servers (Table 1. Notification Components, Table 5. Server Capabilities). 'summary' seems to be required, although I couldn't find any explicit sentence saying so. So the problem seems to be arised by applications that do not follow the specification. However it's worth noting that Notify-OSD could be smarter and show the body of the notification even if no summary has been set. [Bug 1001646] Re: kdenlive0.9-1 is missing xine for DVD preview
Dear melchiaros and Paolo, It's true that kdenlive should come with xine installed. However what Julian pointed out is that xine is not a dependency of kdenlive, it should be a recommendation. I.e.: kdenlive does not need xine in order to work properly, it needs it to improve it's functionality. Remember that recommended packages are installed by default. Julian also said that kdenlive is maintained in Debian (the 'base' of Ubuntu), and this bug should be fixed there. [Bug 1125060] [NEW] Opening 'Settings › Appareance' involves losing workspace size settings
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Set your hsize and vsize to a non default value: gsettings set org.compiz.core:/org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/core/ hsize 3 gsettings set org.compiz.core:/org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/core/ vsize 3 2. Check that the number of workspaces has increased. 3. Open 'System Settings' and go to 'Appareance': gnome-control-center background 4. Check the number of workspaces. What should happen? Nothing. The workspaces should be still 3×3=9. What happens instead? hsize and vsize are reset to their default value (2×2=4). [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult
Dear Aleve, Please, do not modify this old bug. You are wasting contributors' time. As John Lea has already pointed out, the issue you are describing has already been reported as bug #717444. The reason why this bug should remain closed is that a fix has already been written for it. If you are still affected by the bug, then the root cause may be totally different. 'Symptoms' and 'causes' are totally different concepts, and for the propuse of this bug tracker we only look at causes (because we fix the causes, not the symptoms). I'm sorry that you are having difficulties, but this is not the right place to discuss. ** Changed in: unity Status: New = Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160311 Title: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/160311/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult
If I understand this bug's description correctly, this problem exists in Unity-2D on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin. This is an LTS release - according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases it will be supported on both the desktop and the server until April 2017. This should mean fully and wholly supported, not partly supported. That's true, but 'supported' means security and severe bug fixes only. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#When for more information. I also disagree with marking this bug's unity-2d task as Invalid while the upstream GNOME bug is still open Also, you should note that the situation in the GNOME bug is a bit different. Firstly, there is no consensus on whether Metacity or the theme(s) should be fixed. Secondly, whilist Metacity has not been deprecated (AFAIK), it is no longer the development focus of GNOME. In fact, the last comment made by a developer was made on 2011-01-10. as this implies that even if GNOME were to develop and deploy a fix, Ubuntu would not adopt the fix. I removed the metacity task just to make it clear that this bug is closed and to reduce the bug noise. This does not imply that if a fix is released by GNOME, then it won't be adopted by Ubuntu. We do not 'filter' upstream code. If Metacity makes a new release with the fix included, then it will just be packaged. And of course the fact that GNOME are considering fixing this issue should not in any way preclude Ubuntu from attempting to fix it. Again, you are free to open a bug about it, although I doubt it will be fixed as there are no developers working on Metacity on Ubuntu. Anyhow, the point is: this particular one is too old and too long to be useful. Your opinions are welcome, but if you continue posting here, they will just be ignored. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160311 Title: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/160311/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 366644] Re: terminator does not honor x-terminal-emulator -e option
We could do the following: if terminator is invoked as x-terminal- emulator, then it follows the policy. Else it behaves like gnome- terminal. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/366644 Title: terminator does not honor x-terminal-emulator -e option To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-terminal/+bug/366644/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 366644] Re: terminator does not honor x-terminal-emulator -e option
I proposed that behavior for two reasons: 1. if one invokes x-terminal-emulator, he expects that it behaves like any x-terminal-emulator; and 2. this is a common behavior. Examples include: adduser (which can be invoked as addgroup), bash (which can be invoked as sh) and zsh (which can be invoked as sh or ksh). So I'm in favor of the invocation name+setting alternative, rather than just the setting. For completeness, here is an another alternative: copy and adapt gnome- terminal.wrapper. This is a perl wrapper around gnome-terminal that is used for x-terminal-emulator. It is very short and adapting consists in changing just the last line.
