[Bug 1159414] Re: [radeon] Xorg freeze - GPU lockup; doesn't occur with mainline kernel 3.8.0-030800rc3-generic or v3.9-rc4
No I dont need a backport because I circumvent the problem by using my custom 3.9 kernel. Will upgrade to Saucy as I now know its resolved with that. Just tested out using the latest Saucy image and I am not able to reproduce this problem. [Bug 1159414] Re: Xorg freeze - GPU lockup
I have built a kernel from the upstream mainlinekernel following this doc: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild The kernel was version 3.9-rc4. Booting in to this v3.9 kernel has solved my problem. Looks like there were a lot of commits in the drivers/gpu/drm/radeon area going from v3.8-rc7 to the v3.9-rc4 kernel, including these three commits against the radeon r6xx driver: ca57802 drm/radeon: halt engines before disabling MC (6xx/7xx) f13f773 drm/radeon: use status regs to determine what to reset (6xx/7xx) d3cb781 drm/radeon: rework GPU reset on r6xx/r7xx I shall keep using my v3.9 custom kernel until the v3.9 kernel is adopted by raring. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1159414 Title: Xorg freeze - GPU lockup To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/1159414/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Wireless print server or wireless printer
Hi Rob, What I'd like to do to make things simple for the staff is to get either a wireless printer or a wireless print server with a USB port so that these two laptops can print to it. You might want to take a look at the Epson Stylus SX425W [1]. Its a wireless/usb printer/scanner/copier and if you look around you can find it for about £50 [2]. The replacement ink cartridges are quite cheap too - about £10. There are linux drivers available aswell [3]. My Dad did a lot of research when his last printer went phut and he decided to get one of these. It was simple enough to install those drivers and we found and it works nicely with lucid in either usb or wireless mode. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Flash problems in 10.04
As an aside to this - both my machines now only have Ubuntu on them, so I don't have the GRUB screen when I start up. But what if I want to load an old kernel (following update problems)? How can I do that? Just done this myself recently, It appears that by default, grub2 will not display the menu on single os computers. To permanently reveal the grub2 menu at boot time you have to edit /etc/default/grub as root, and comment out the line GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0, then run update-grub. On the next reboot you should see the grub menu again. Lots of details on grub2 are in [1] below - search for GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 on that page for the bit that explains how to reveal the menu. If you dont fancy making a permanent change you can (according to [1]) just hold down the shift key as the computer boots to reveal the menu. Not tried that myself though. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Nvidia Settings (was Media Centre Advice)
Hello, I installed 10.04 on my revo and I too struggled to get any sound via HDMI which refused stubbornly to work despite my best efforts. Finally I gave up and completed the install by activating the nvidia graphics driver. After a reboot I was surprised to find that sound just started working via HDMI. I dont think I made any other changes, so I think it was just activating that nvidia driver that did the trick for me. I was following the install guides on greenhughes.com [1] (which mentions un-muting a channel via alsamixer which I did too) and popeys guide [2] (adapting it for lucid as I went along). Cheers Andrew [1] http://www.greenhughes.com/content/how-install-ubuntu-910-and-boxee-beta-acer-aspire-revo-including-64-bit-option [1] http://popey.com/blog/2009/08/06/acer-aspire-revo-ubuntu-boxee-and-remote-control/ -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] How to edit Policykit
Hi Philip, I too had the problem with shutdown warning other uses were logged in, and prompting for a password. I tracked this down to having installed mythtv on my laptop. I removed it (I was only testing it out anyway) and the problem disappeared. It looks like there is a bug reported against mythtv [1] for this - with a work around described in comment #17. Might try that myself if I put mythtv back on my laptop. If you dont have mythtv installed, then it looks like others with a similar problem [2] have found out (comment #12) which policies to edit [3]. Not tried this myself as I dont have the problem anymore. Regards, Andrew [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/consolekit/+bug/445953 [2] http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1328592page=2 [3] http://www.len.ro/2009/11/karmic-various-tricks/ 2009/12/31 Philip Stubbs phi...@stuphi.co.uk Hi, How do I edit policykit so that it stops asking for a password on shutdown? When I try and shutdown my machine, a dialog pops up saying that the current policy does not allow shutting down the machine while other users are logged in, and requires an admin password to continue. I believe this makes little sense on a desktop system, and would like to stop this from happening. All I can find out is that it is Policykit, but I cant find any way of editing it. It looks as though it's about Thunderbird logging how it's processing mail via the standard protocols (you select the ones you want to monitor). My problem is that Thunderbird itself is becoming unresponsive from time to time (the dreaded darkened window!), and I'm having to do a 'Force quit' and restart. I can't see anything in the system logs; and I wondered if there's a log that monitoring Thunderbird itself, rather than just the mail processing. Or have I got this entirely wrong, and the log you mention is what I need? mac Hi mac, I had a problem with similar symptoms to those you describe and this was the only way I could get any log output out of thunderbird to figure out way was going on. As you say it does not appear to log anywhere else - I couldnt find anything in the usual places either. My problem turned out to be down to my firewall blocking thunderbird, so things worked fine when I was inside the firewall and failed in a similar way to the one you described when I was outside it. From the log I spotted thunderbird was never getting a response to its login request, which led me back to check the firewall and fix it.
