Anurag,
why you do depend upon the shopkeeper? you may contract with him to pay
the modem if he can install it correctly using windows. your aim is to
troublefree internet connection from your residence, na?
you may think over it.

 Hey Guys

If you remember I earlier emailed that I sent my Dell 5100 with UBUNTU
6.06to my parents in India (Lansdowne). They weren't able to
 configure the
internal modem for internet connection. I suggested them to buy a serial
modem and the shopkeepr convimced them to install windows XP. Anyways,
 they
weren't able to buy that modem because of smart shopkeepers. I am going to
post them a serial modem from here (US). Does anybody have any experience
setting up that modem? I would really appreciate that support.

 Regards
 Anurag

Anurag, please confirm your parents using a BSNL dial up line or
Broadband line. Then you can guide them best.

 Hi,

My parents have a Dell 5100 Laptop. They have been trying to connect to
internet through that (dila up) and I tried to guide them on their cell
phone myself (I am in US), but to no avail.

They have a BSNL connection, and as far as I know they need to fill up the
number 17, dial prefix (Area code) and username and password in
 there. I
think I tried almost what I knew. I myself have never connected through
modem so I am more confused. I would appreciate any help regarding that.

 Hi; :-)

My name is Sanjay Tripathi and I'm from India. I'd come across
Ubuntu about 5 months ago and since then I'm promoting all flavors of
it. I've made many admirers and fans of edubuntu on both 32 and 64
 bit platforms.

I'm basically a mechanical engineering graduate doing masters
in the same discipline and having a part time job in Dept. of Plastic
Technology, Ujjain Polytechnic College Ujjain (MP) India.

I've recently joined the Ubuntu Marketing team and Indian Local Community
on Launchpad to learn how to spread and promote it from you guys out
 there.
 Have made Launchpad account https://launchpad.net/~santrip.

I hope the team members will help and guide me in this matter.
