Hey Lieze,

Thanks for your reaction. You're probably right. I'm planning to bring
companies into the loop too, but haven't decided in what form yet. On one
hand, it would be cool to have a list of jobs/topics/opportunities so that
the students can actively search for a match too. On the other hand, I kind
of like the idea of "subscribe and relax": you just enter your details and
wait for someone to contact you. Like it or not, but students are quite lazy,
and maybe it's better to expect companies to be more actively involved in the
employee-searching process than students in the employer-searching process.

I might be wrong, I don't know. Time will tell I guess, but I like the idea of
creating an offer of several topics where you can proactively get involved in
a professional environment, linked to your thesis or assignment.

More ideas are always welcome. ;-)

[Ubuntu-be] [OT] Huur een student

2008-11-17 Thread Bram Biesbrouck
Hi all,

I just started a new initiative to work together with students on various
projects, some of them in the OS (planning a throughstart of captorials.com)
world:
http://www.huureenstudent.be

The original idea behind it was that I don't really have the time anymore to
continue my previous open-source initiatives, but I didn't want to abandon
the projects at once. So I started this website to get in touch with some
students who have the skills to continue working on them. Several customers
of my company told me this was an interesting initiative, because it would
enable them to get in touch with skilled students while bypassing the often
expensive interim offices. This made me think: why not see things a little
bigger and create a platform where everybody can get in touch with students
that study someting related to the business you're in. It would enable me to
find some students for my own cause, and in the meantime, help others out
too. Maybe, if things would get big enough, I could start up some projects
with funds coming from website-revenues.

So, it's all still a bit fresh now, but the initial reactions I get from my
fellow business-partners indicate this is interesting enough to send out to
some other people in the business. My apologies for the dutch language of the
website; it's still in beta-phase until February, where I will decide if the
project is viable or not, but I assume it will be, regarding the reactions on
it. If all is well in February, I'll get it translated, and market it for the
entire country.

So if you plan to start up an OS-project yourself, or you're just in need of
some cheap but skilled temporary employees, have a look; some 100 students
enlisted themself up until now, some of them seem to be very interesting
computer-minded people.

Please send this through to your friends or colleagues if you think it might
interest them too.

If you find this mail offensive due to the OT content, my apologies.

[Ubuntu-be] KBC-for-business and linux, pt2

2008-08-07 Thread Bram Biesbrouck
Hey guys,

A while ago, I asked everyone for some hints/comments/suggestions about the
fact that my KBC-online-for-business didn't have support for Linux. A lot of
reactions later, I visited my KBC-agent and explained her this is of pretty
large importance to me, since I don't have any M$ boxes at all in my company.
She said the only thing she could do was prolong my old password-key
protected account some more, and file a complaint to the KBC tech staff. So
she did.

Now, this morning actually, I received a phone call from a technical KBC
employee, explaining to me that my complaint has been discussed, and he can
formally tell me there will be no support for any other OS than MS Windows.

Wait, there's more. He did have a solution ready for me (since he privately
uses Linux too, whow); install VirtualBox/VMware/... and run Windows on your
Linux box, use IE, and access your KBC-account like that... Then, I told him
this isn't really a structural solution, since I don't have any MS license,
and I don't wanna pay 100+ euro, just to access my KBC-online account
(actually, I lied, I do have a license on my laptop, but I don't want to use
my laptop for checking my bank-statements, and the license is bound to that
machine). I continued asking him why it's so difficult for a company like KBC
to hire a couple of Linux-developers, and adapt/adopt their system, so it
works on Linux/Mac/Solaris/... too, after all, it's a _business_ account, and
I expect it to be more flexible than my personal one. He said: hey, it's not
us, blame Isabel, they're the ones that don't support other OS's. Once again,
I continued, asking him why other banks succeed where KBC seems to be
failing? "Well, because they don't use Isabel, we're the only one that are
providing this excellent service". I don't know about other banks, but to me,
this seems like a bold statement to make.

Another solution was to switch back to a regular account, and use their
regular login-apparatus instead. Seems like a stupid solution to me too; once
again, businesses want their banks to be more flexible.

Anyway, now I know there's no luck in having Linux-support for my
KBC-for-business. I think I'm going to look for another bank, at least for my
business account, since this is unacceptable.

Any suggestions?

No, I guess not. Although it's probably linked to it, it's
another "more-secure" way of logging into their website.
I received an "eBusiness Card" (smartcard) that I need to plug into the
USB-reader to log into the website.

[Ubuntu-be] KBC Business

2008-05-28 Thread Bram Biesbrouck
Hi all,

I just got message from my bank (KBC) that I need to upgrade my
KBC-business-account. Now, instead of using a separate card-reader like the
private accounts, they are forcing me to use an USB smartcard-reader, which,
you guessed it, doesn't work on Linux. A mail to their technical staff
doesn't show much respect for other OS's:

Beste cliënt,
KBC-Online for Business met beveiliging eBusiness Card is compatibel met PC
(Windows) en in combinatie met Internet Explorer. Op de website
www.kbc.be/welkom worden alle vereiste stappen die moeten uitgevoerd worden
voor de installatie weergegeven. Apple wordt niet ondersteund en Linux wordt
helaas ook niet ondersteund door KBC net zoals zijn tientallen
UNIX-varianten.

In short: "we chose to support Windows-only, cause none of our clients use
Mac, Linux or Unix-computers to access their bank accounts." I'm asking
myself what kind of R&D-managers are working at KBC. I figure that, instead
of hiring a tech-staff that knows how to do M$-programming, it really can't
be that hard to use some imagination, and hire one that knows how to program
for a UNIX environment too. Funds aren't the issue here too, I presume...

Any of you got experience in handling these kind of issues? I suppose an angry
mail to some support-guy won't do much in this case.

cheers,

b.

[Ubuntu-be] wanted: sponsoring for captorials

2007-08-13 Thread Bram Biesbrouck
Hi all,

Some of you might know me of the Captorials/ScreenKast project.

In short:
ScreenKast is a (KDE-based) client that captures your screen, offering the
possibility to add commentboxes (so no audio) and do some (very basic)
editing/exporting.
Captorials is a webservice/website that accepts recordings from ScreenKast,
processes them and makes them available on the website for anyone to
consultate.
The idea is/was to create a visual helpdesk, created by Linux-enthousiasts
around the world.

In the past, I lost my interest for various reasons, but the main ones were
financial ones. Now that I have a relative steady income and a tiny of my
time to spare, I'd like to give the project a new start (partly because of
interest from the community).

However, I'm looking for someone who wants to sponsor the hosting for the
captorials webservice/website. If hardware is an issue, I've two Dell
Poweredge servers laying here, which I'm willing to 'donate' to the project,
assuming someone can help me out with the rackspace and uplink.
The uplink should be sufficient for a video-oriented website. I don't have any
details on this, but I guess 5Mbit/s is a minimum requirement.

Hope to hear from someone.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] captorials, throughstart

2007-04-04 Thread Bram Biesbrouck
Streaming video is pretty needy.
At least a 5Mbit connection I guess.
On the other hand, shell access, tomcat or jboss, php, mysql5, ...
If it becomes popular, large storage is a plus, too.
I have 2 servers of my own (1x1U, 1x2U), so actually, just some rackspace is
sufficient...

[Ubuntu-be] captorials, throughstart

2007-04-04 Thread Bram Biesbrouck
Hi all,

As some of you know, I've been involved in open-source videohelpdesking
(Captorials and ScreenKast). Due to a lot of factors, mainly money-related,
I've been forced to retract my two servers from the datacentre of my main
sponsor (E-Bo Enterprises, which I'm still grateful for the delivered
service).

However, a webservice can't be in the air without servers, so this means the
captorials project is (temporarily) dead. Since my interest in
videohelpdesking is kicking in again, and I'm making some (very little) money
with endless side-projects, I'd like to re-introduce videohelpdesking into
the community, but this time, not alone, but with some fellow interested
people.

Here's the concept: find some people who think alike and have access to some
resources (servers, datacentre-space, dev-skills, influence in some
soft-companies, etc) to spare. The idea would be rethink the whole project,
using all the software already written (by me), but this time, completely
open-source; server, client, webservice. This is the *idealogical* idea.
Perhaps I'll have to compromise here and there, but I feel the interest from
inside the community for videohelpdesking is still there, so perhaps some
people feel like joining this project.

Please respond to this mail if you think you have some interesting ideas...
