2012-07-29 Thread Bruce Durling
Using options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 to turn off n networking hasn't
worked. It has successfully turned off n (leaving abg), but I still get
the deep sleep problem. I'll try turning off IPv6. I've also ordered the
following USB adaptor: Edimax EW-7811UN Wireless 802.11b/g/n 150Mbps
Nano USB Adaptor which people seem to be using successfully with
RaspberryPI.

[ubuntu-uk] wifi problem with Lenovo X201 Centrino Advanced-N 6200

2011-11-05 Thread Bruce Durling
Hi,

I've been having some trouble lately with the wifi on my Lenovo X201
and I was wondering if anyone was having similar trouble or could
suggest a fix. All help gratefully appreciated.

I've been banging my head on google around this for a good number of
weeks now and the suggestions that I've found (mostly around turning
off IPv6) don't seem to resolve it. I've also tried resetting the bios
to the defaults and re-installed Ubuntu 11.10 (the problems started in
the summer under 11.04).

The card is:

Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6200

The error message from dmesg is:

[ubuntu-uk] nvidia and lucid

2010-05-22 Thread Bruce Durling
Hi,

I have a friend running Lucid with nvidia and he is having trouble
with the video drivers (black screen after bootup or flickering low
resolution). I'm noticing that there are a number of discussions on
ubuntuforums and the nvidia boards and some bug reports, but I haven't
found anything definite for a solution (and none of the instructions
have solved it for my friend yet).

The mostly likely solutions have been:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1470206
http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/securitymonkey/black-screen-on-boot-with-ubuntu-104-lucid-lynx-solution-38426
http://ubuntuguide.net/install-nvidia-graphical-driver-in-ubuntu-lucid-10-04

I feel a bit like I'm just randomly pointing him at potential
solutions and I was hoping someone could tell me if they had actually
solved the problem themselves or knew of an official solution.

I'm guessing the next step after this is a bug report or find which
one of the various ones I've seen is the most appropriate one to
attach this too.

cheers,
Bruce

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Google Chrome OS Announced

2009-07-08 Thread Bruce Durling
2009/7/8 Farran Lee fazzy.bab...@ntlworld.com:
I'm not sure how correct this is, but I read somewhere (might've been on
here :P) that the HTML5 standard doesn't actually include the opensource
media stuff, because Microsoft and I think another corporation didn't
like it. However, Mozilla and most other groups have included it anyway.

Tell me if I'm wrong, I probably am, but just thought I'd mention it :)

Apple killed the open source (ogg) codec stuff with some help from
Google from what I've read. There seem to be some worries about ogg
infringing patents.

Good overview here: http://lwn.net/Articles/340132/

[ubuntu-uk] dropbox on jaunty?

2009-04-09 Thread Bruce Durling
Does anyone know if there is a trusted dropbox nautilus plugin for Jaunty?

Not yet. I was hoping to put the repository in and it looks like it is
intrepid only. I've seen some warnings about python errors. I'll give
it a try in a bit though if that is the last resort. Thanks for the
suggestion. I'll write something up when I do get something working.

Somewhere on the forums there was a link to the development version.
This is the version i'm currently using on jaunty.

As for an official repo i think you might have to wait until jaunty is
 released.

I found this link:

I might give that a try. Is that the one you mean?

dodgy evil closed ones. I've used nVidia before, and they seem to be
less painful. However I again have no idea about which graphics cards
 are good value.

I have an ATI card with my new HP. The closed source driver works fine
on Ubuntu 8.10, but not under mythtv. The open source driver works
fine on both, but is a bit slow. There are some audio/video sync
problems when showing video. If I had to do it all again I'd go with
nVidia. I had hoped the open ATI driver would be a bit more mature in
Ubuntu.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Keep losing sound

2009-01-07 Thread Bruce Durling
I'd just like to me too on this. I'm running a Dell Inspiron 1420 that
came with Ubuntu and I'm running 32bit 8.10 now.

Things seem better but still flaky. I should get to the bottom of it
one day really.

I have a desktop that runs Mythbuntu 8.10 and that doens't seem to
have much in the way of sound trouble going from flash in firefox (for
iPlayer and youtube, etc) to MythTV.

It seems to be more of a problem when I come out of suspend. It just
hasn't annoyed me enough to really get down and diagnose it though.

Thanks for the fuser tips. I'll give them a try and see what is going
on. I do wonder if part of my trouble is that I upgraded rather than
re-installed. I can't get PidginIM to work with gtalk or AIM either,
but that should be another post.

None of this stops me from using my machine though, so I have it all
as low priority.
