[Bug 1232454] Re: Computer will suspend very soon because of inactivity. dialog when resuming from suspend

2014-05-01 Thread Carsten Schnober
I'm happy to see that this bug has been more or less resolved in 14.04
by changing the dialog to a less intrusive notification.

[Bug 1232454] Re: Computer will suspend very soon because of inactivity. dialog when resuming from suspend

2014-01-19 Thread Carsten Schnober
I second pdknsk's suggestion. There might be some rare situation in which a
notification before going to sleep could be helpful, but in a typical scenario,
being inactive implies that a user is not watching the screen anyway.
On the other hand, I suppose that users that are silently reading on the screen
would actually be pleased by a notification. Having them in mind, I would
suggest to replace the notification window with an onscreen message through
empathy.

[Bug 1232454] Re: Computer will suspend very soon because of inactivity. dialog when resuming from suspend

2014-01-10 Thread Carsten Schnober
Thanks for the suggestions. I'd like to point out, however, that automatically
killing the notification windows affects any notification, including ones that
might indicate completely unrelated issues. I suppose this could result in
quite annoying effects when potentially important messages are dismissed
through this. Therefore I would not even consider this approach a workaround
for the actual problem.
There might be a way to kill specific notification windows only, but I don't
think that this leads to a clean solution for the bug either.

[Bug 1161599] Re: Backup to Ubuntu one failed, after 5 attempts status 400 bad request

2013-05-04 Thread Carsten Schnober
Hi,
I'm just wondering whether there is any progress on this issue. Unfortunately,
this bug makes the Ubuntu backup system unusable for the affected users,
leaving them without a backup of their data. So I believe this creates a
certain level of pressure of eventually fixing this. Thanks!

[Bug 1031108] Re: weather applet does not update weather data any longer

2012-07-31 Thread Carsten Schnober
Additional observations (nor sure how they are related):
- the weather indicator cannot be terminated any more via the menu, it just
keeps being displayed in the Unity panel (killing the process manually is the
only way to get rid of it).
- upon start, indicator-weather emits the following warning:
{{{/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gobject/constants.py:24: Warning:
g_boxed_type_register_static: assertion `g_type_from_name (name) == 0' failed}}}

  import gobject._gobject

makes the desktop usable again...

[Bug 931122] Re: 3D performance is very bad

2012-04-27 Thread Carsten Schnober
I can confirm the problem with the same graphics hardware. Extract from
lspci output:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

glxgears -fullscreen gives me 34 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6.773 FPS
glxgears (no fullscreen): 118 frames in 5.0 seconds = 23.595 FPS

The GUI is generally very sluggish, especially for any operation
involving 3D effects, e.g. the HUD, using the 3D windows switcher etc.
However, even in the GDM welcome screen, it takes a couple of seconds to
render the background image.

[Bug 346766] Re: categories are not translated

2009-04-20 Thread Carsten Schnober
The bug is still around in the Jaunty Release Candidate. It shows up
every time the user switches his session language. After his next login,
the category titles in gnome-app-install appear in the former language.
A sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-app-install seems to solve the issue
until the session language is changed again.

I can confirm this bug on my Samsung X20 laptop with i915 graphics chip

connecting the power cable and/or closing and opening lid.
Suspend/resume worked like a charme before upgrading to Gutsy.

[Bug 45696] Re: NetworkManager can't find interface on resume from suspend

2007-03-01 Thread Carsten Schnober
In my laptop system with one wifi card (ipw2200) and one ethernet card (both
built in), I think the problem is caused by changing interface names: After
system boot, the network devices are named eth2 and eth3, eth0 and eth1 don't
exist. Network Manager works.
After a suspend, the devices are called eth0 and eth1, so Network Manager
doesn't find them anymore. I can still configure the renamed devices using
ifconfig and iwconfig.
Restarting Network Manager doesn't have any effect.
The packages network-manager and network-manager-gnome don't contain init
scripts at all, btw. Therefore I can restart Network Manager only by killing
and restarting the processes manually.
The problem may be related to Udev, I suppose.
