Triaged: Trivial test case and pointer to fix
Medium: Reasonable starter; if you can point to it being triggerable in some

This triggers in Quantal libc6 2.15-0ubuntu20 , and as I understand it, it
needs to get fixed in the dev version before being SRUd
to 12.04.

[Bug 1055545] Re: Cannot open high resolution files.

2012-10-07 Thread Dave Gilbert
When you say that 'feh' hangs, what do you see? For me I see a blank
white window, and it's not using any CPU; but the reason it's blank and
white is that it's looking at the upper top left of the image which is
the white background, if I click and drag to move nearer the middle of
the image I see the picture, similarly if I use the option to put it to
full screen I see the entire image.

(Using feh 2.3-2 on Quantal)

[Bug 1055520] Re: Cannot open high resolution files

2012-10-07 Thread Dave Gilbert
Seems to work in 0.2.3-2 (in quantal), not obvious what fixed it though.

Gpicview looks like it's actually a core package (Task: lubuntu-desktop)
, and thus it might be suitable for an SRU to update Precise; if you
think this is appropriate please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure
[1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.

However, it might be worth triaging it a little more on your setup
first, since it's not obvious what fixed it on Quantal for me.

[Bug 1054502] Re: man page dd - Sending USR1 signal

2012-10-07 Thread Dave Gilbert
That example certainly isn't clear.

I don't think you need the kill -CONT, as far as I can tell the -USR1 will
display the info and just carry on without
any other requirement.
So it's not obvious to me what the kill $pid in the original example is
supposed to do, if you look at the info page
for dd it uses a more complex example that makes some more sense:

   Sending an `INFO' signal to a running `dd' process makes it print
I/O statistics to standard error and then resume copying. In the
example below, `dd' is run in the background to copy 10 million blocks.
The `kill' command makes it output intermediate I/O statistics, and
when `dd' completes normally or is killed by the `SIGINT' signal, it
outputs the final statistics.

 $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null count=10MB  pid=$!
 $ kill -s INFO $pid; wait $pid
 3385223+0 records in
 3385223+0 records out
 1733234176 bytes (1.7 GB) copied, 6.42173 seconds, 270 MB/s
 1000+0 records in
 1000+0 records out
 512000 bytes (5.1 GB) copied, 18.913 seconds, 271 MB/s

   On systems lacking the `INFO' signal `dd' responds to the `USR1'
signal instead, unless the `POSIXLY_CORRECT' environment variable is
set.

  It's possible the kill $pid in the example is just there to kill off
the backgrounded dd.

Confirming because at the very least the example is confusing.

[Bug 1058289] Re: Critical readline6 patch not included

2012-10-06 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi John,
  Looking on Quantal, it looks like 6.2-9 has got the changes; I don't know if
it has gone into anything earlier. The changelog entry reads:

readline6 (6.2-9) unstable; urgency=low

  * Apply upstream patches 002 - 004. Fixes:
- The readline shared library helper script needs to be updated for
  Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion, darwin11).
- A change between readline-6.1 and readline-6.2 to prevent the readline
  input hook from being called too frequently had the side effect of
  causing delays when reading pasted input on systems such as Mac OS X.
  This patch fixes those delays while retaining the readline-6.2 behavior.
  Closes: #687100.
- Attempting to redo (using `.') the vi editing mode `cc', `dd', or `yy'
  commands leads to an infinite loop.
  * Make examples Makefile Multi-Arch installable (Shawn Landden).
Closes: #670030.
  * Fix building with -Wformat-security, and pass CPPFLAGS (Simon Ruderich).
Closes: #687717.

Looks like 1048304 is another dupe of this?
1056511 looks like a very similar backtrace to me as well, even though the

the same.

As of todays Quantal update it's stable enough to allow me to login and

  Can you confirm for me how you've got the audio on fldigi set up - are you

If you start fldigi in a terminal does it print any other diagnostics before it

It might also be good to follow the instructions here:

[Bug 1058289] Re: Critical readline6 patch not included

2012-09-30 Thread Dave Gilbert
The comments on that change say:

   A change between readline-6.1 and readline-6.2 to prevent the readline input
  hook from being called too frequently had the side effect of causing delays
  when reading pasted input on systems such as Mac OS X. This patch fixes
  those delays while retaining the readline-6.2 behavior.

I guess perhaps someone thought this was only a problem for if it was
_compiled_ on macos; are you saying that this can be triggered by using
a MacOS terminal to log into an ubuntu box running readline?

[Bug 234225] Re: jfs_mkfs: double free or corruption

2012-09-27 Thread Dave Gilbert
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug seems to have
been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Quantal
Quetzal; I've tried with version 1.1.15-2 of jfsutils on dummy (sparse)
files upto 9TB in size (the wonders of sparse files) and it seems fine.

However, if you can add some more detail about how you can repeat it
then that would be useful - e.g. does it happen on any device or just a
particular size/device?

This is a significant bug in Ubuntu. If you need a fix for the bug in previous
versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring
the need to a developer's attention.

[Bug 234055] Re: Hardy tkdesk crashes on startup

2012-09-27 Thread Dave Gilbert
It looks like this was fixed in tkdesk 2.0.-9.1:
   * Switched off components autoloading and added patch
http://tkdesk.sourceforge.net/patches/tkdesk-2.0p2.patch by upstream
to make tkdesk working with itcl3 version 3.3 or newer.

and that's been in everything after Hardy; Hardy is only still in support for
server, so this
won't get fixed in Hardy, but should work in everything since.

[Bug 235473] Re: Ardour crashes when deleting loop

2012-09-27 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi Ezra,
  Thanks for reporting this bug; I was just working through some old bugs and
noticed your bug, apologies that no one has got to it in the mean time.
  I tried this on Quantal according to your instructions and it didn't crash
for me, however, I've never used ardour2 before so it's possible I'm missing
something.

I'm going to mark it as fixed-released since as far as I can tell it
works now, if you can still trigger it please reopen it.

I don't know which version fixed this, so it's possible that if it
affects a release that's still supported so f you need a fix for the bug
in previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU

You hadn't included a .svg that triggered this, so I have (created on

[Bug 508973] Re: improper matching of certain words

2012-09-27 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi Adam,
   I think you need to use the -k option to get the behaviour you want.

As I read the manpage what agrep does is search for the 'pattern' - and that
pattern includes searching for the regexp, and then if it doesn't find it gives
you the 'best' (with -B). But because you passed it things with '.' they form
part of a regexp meaning 'anything'
so the regexp matches properly, and it never goes into finding a 'best' case.

-k solves that by never allowing regexp.

[Bug 914037] Re: agrep gives incorrect output in some approximate searches

2012-09-27 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi Eric,
  Hmm, yes this is a bit confusing,

I agree your 'agrep -S1' case is producing the wrong result, however in 4.17-9
the manpage says:
' -SkSet the cost of a substitution to k (k is a positive integer). This
option does not currently work with regular
  expressions.'

so, I think that's just a limitation on agrep 4.17

I agree the -1 case is wrong to emit 'aterfal' since I agree it's
nowhere in the input (and that's why I've confirmed it).

As for versions, yes, it's a mess, the 'homepage' listed in
debian/control points to http://freshmeat.net/projects/agrep whcih
points to the 2.04 version ftp://ftp.cs.arizona.edu/agrep/

The package has a 4.17 source tar and from what I can see it comes from
http://wftp.tu-
chemnitz.de/pub/Local/urz/ding/contrib/SRPMS/agrep-4.17-1.src.rpm that
was suggested in the following debian bug

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=307442

but as you say the printed version number is completely inconsistent in
that source.

[Bug 1045027] Re: [regression] iPXE kills kvm with KVM: entry failed, hardware error 0x80000021

2012-09-26 Thread Dave Gilbert
Yeh, already tested 3.5.4 - it's broken ( Linux major
3.5.4-030504-generic #201209142010 SMP Sat Sep 15 00:11:50 UTC 2012
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux )

There are a heck of a lot of differences in the kvm code between 3.5.x
and 3.6.x (about 400 patches from what I can see), so it's a bit of a
big job to find it.

[Bug 1055068] Re: Guest user can use arbitrary MAC addresses

2012-09-26 Thread Dave Gilbert
Well, I don't think I'd expect a guest to be able to set an arbitrary IP
either.

As for 'if you've got physical access all is lost' - that makes a lot of
assumptions.
For example in a school or something the actual machines and cabling might be in
a security case with the cabling trunked down.

Another example is that you could expect to leave a bunch of people in an area
using
guest accounts and not have to monitor them closely; you'd notice if they were
diving behind the machine at the cabling.

Is there a definition anywhere of what 'guest' should be able to do?

[Bug 1056452] Re: Desktop becomes unresponsive after pluggin in usb memory stick

2012-09-26 Thread Dave Gilbert
Are you saying it's unresponsive but then recovers?
  If so, can you include the output of the 'dmesg' command taken after it
recovers after having plugged in the usb key.
Please also include the output of the commands:

  dmesg
   lsusb -v
   mount

[Bug 179625] Re: nullidentd man page and default configuration is wrong

2012-09-26 Thread Dave Gilbert
Looking at package 1.0-5 on Quantal, the behaviour seems to be following
the man page (which still suggestes nullidentd [uid]):

dg@major:~/Documents$ /usr/sbin/nullidentd

 : USERID : UNIX : foobar

 : USERID : UNIX : foobar

 : USERID : UNIX : foobar

dg@major:~/Documents$ /usr/sbin/nullidentd penguins

 : USERID : UNIX : penguins

 : USERID : UNIX : penguins

dg@major:~/Documents$ /usr/sbin/nullidentd RANDOM

 : USERID : UNIX : 5l2bB726

 : USERID : UNIX : 3o4K826r

(and RANDOM is now documented)

I can't see from the changelog where/if that changed, but it looks like
it's correct now.

So, closing as 'Fix Released'; (It seems unlikely such a change would
backport to whatever version you first reported it on)

[Bug 232051] Re: talkd does not work

2012-09-26 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hmm; this bug is a bit confusing; On quantal I've got ytalk(3.3.0-5) to
work with talkd (0.17-15) (using openbsd-inetd)

However, while the text of the report talks about using apt-get source talkd,
the package it is associated with is inetutils,
and inetutils has it's own talkd, inetutils-talkd.

I've also got inetutils-talkd (2:1.9-1) to work with ytalk using
openbsd-inetd

So that sounds like both talkd's are OK.

However, if I run inetutils-talkd with inetutils-inetd (which you would
think sane) it doesn't work with the log error:

Sep 27 02:44:06 major inetd[31537]: talk/tcp: getaddrinfo: Servname not
supported for ai_socktype

which does sound suspiciously similar (but not quite the same as the
original report - even though I'm not sure whether the original reporter
really intended to report it against inetutils or talkd.

So confirming, since inetutils-inetd+inetutils-talkd doesn't work.

[Bug 1055068] [NEW] Guest user can use arbitrary MAC addresses

2012-09-23 Thread Dave Gilbert
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

In Quantal, as a guest user you can create a network connection with an
arbitrary mac address - I take
that as a security hole (being able to break another machine on the network).

(actually in this case the guest user you get to register a remote
desktop account, you can get a terminal in it - that might be another
security issue)

Go to the network manager icon and edit connections
  Wired network
   Add connection
   Choose the eth0/deault device mac address
Type in a MAC address of your own evil making in the 'cloned mac
address' box
 Untick 'available to all users'

and Save

Now, you have a new connection, but it's not up

Open a terminal and use

  nmcli con

to list the network connections, and note the UUID of your new one.
Now do

  nmcli con up uuid .where . is the UUID you just got.

You're now spoofing someone elses MAC address.

[Bug 1030250] Re: This paricular file looks broken in Calc

2012-09-23 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi Christopher,
  (Triager/Not the original reporter)
  I agree that setting the zoom does fix it - good spot, so it does seem to be
a choice of default zoom that seems to be the problem.
However, calligra seems to make a more sane guess at the default zoom, and it's
visible on opening, so I think it's still a valid bug.

[Bug 1055075] Re: samba4 default installation Connection failed (Error NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED)

2012-09-23 Thread Dave Gilbert
Confirmed: I could recreate this
Medium: This is the universe version of samba not the main one; and also if
this is just a default config problem then it's not a high; although I don't
know enough Samba to know if it's really more serious.

I suspect there are multiple bugs here; the log.%m name suggests something is
going wrong with the naming,
and the reference to /usr/sbin/smbd that doesn't exist suggests there is some
larger scale package problem.

I guess one thought is that since 3.6-rc3 works fine, it would probably
be better to pick whatever fixed it from the newer one.

[Bug 218837] Re: Assigning instead of Comparing

2012-09-22 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi ek2,
  No I don't think so, you don't specify the verison of ksh93 that you looked
at,
I've gone pack to ksh93r which looks like it's from a bit before you reported
it and that has the code you list,
at line 519 - of name.c, not main.c :

 514if((nq =
(*fp-disc-createf)(np,cp+1,flags,fp)) == np)
 515{
 516 add = NV_ADD;
 517 break;
 518  }
 519  else if(np=nq)
 520 c =
*(cp=dp-last=fp-last);

and I think that's still valid;

   514: That assigns nq with the value of creatf AND compares it with np
   515-518 gets executed if the value of creatf matches the np value
   519 That assigns the new nq to np, and executes the code at 520 iff nq (and
therefore now np) is non-null

horrible code, but I don't see an error there.

[Bug 218837] Re: Assigning instead of Comparing

2012-09-16 Thread Dave Gilbert
I'm not convinced this is a bug (although please check my reasoning);
the code is still present in ast-ksh.2012-09-11 upstream source but has
moved to name.c around line 1201.

That (horrible) block of code is:
  1if((nq = (*fp-disc-createf)(np,cp+1,flags,fp)) ==
np)
  2 {
  3  add = NV_ADD;
  4 shp-last_table = 0;
  5  break;
   6 }
   7 else if(np=nq)
   8 {
9if((c =
*(sp=cp=dp-last=fp-last))==0)
  10  {
  11
if(nv_isarray(np)  sp[-1]!=']')
  12
nv_putsub(np,NIL(char*),ARRAY_UNDEF);
  13   return(np);
  14  }
   15 }

(all 3 or 4 levels down in the middle of a do/while loop)

My reading of that is that (using my line numbering I added above)
   (1) Assigning nq a new value from the call to *createf, and if it matches np
execute the block lines 3-5
   (7) If the new nq didn't match np, then we get to the if (np=nq) which is
the line in question, they can't
be intending to compare np with nq because that's what (1) just did, so
I think they really intend to do an
assignment to np, which possibly gets returned at (13)
   but more importantly the 'np is set up for the next iteration around the
do/while loop.

Yeuch!

If you're not sure you might try reporting upstream at
http://www.kornshell.com/

Sorry, missed one line - what that if (np=nq) is really doing is assigning

checking if the new nq is null.

 2) With lvm, It doesn't always happen if the guest is configured with a
single core; most of the time but not always
 3) With lvm it seems to happen (almost?) always when the guest has
multiple cores.

output of tgtadm as requested:

[Bug 920035] Re: Precise alternate (and therefore LTSP) install fails

2012-09-15 Thread Dave Gilbert
If you diddmesg  dmesg.myoutput
that'll save it in a file that you can somehow copy off; similarly the other
log files will be in /var/log

Probably the easiest thing to do is to plug a USB thumb drive in when it hangs,
if you're lucky the drive will automount itself in something like
/media/something (do ls /media before and after plugging the thumb
drive in); if not you might have to do it manually by

mkdir /tmp/adir
mount /dev/sd?? /tmp/adir
(where /dev/sd?? is /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdc1 depending which is next free).

and then you can use

cp dmesg.myoutput /tmp/adir (or /media/whatever if it put it there)
and when you're done do

umount /tmp/adir

before pulling the thumb drive out.

[Bug 1048285] [NEW] Add some diagnostics to do-release-upgrade when it can't find a release

2012-09-09 Thread Dave Gilbert

every LTS+1 those of in +1 see zillions of people asking why do-release-upgrade

[Bug 1048008] [NEW] tgt needs restart to find LUN

2012-09-08 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

I've got a KVM guest running Quantal server (as per CD install 2012-09-01) and
it runs tgtd with a single target
(the target is an LVM lv - I'll attach any configs that apport hasn't attached)

If I just boot the vm, the guests don't see the disc - when they log in they
just see the 'controller' (LUN 0),
if I restart tgtd then they see the disc (LUN 1).

I've edited /etc/init/tgt.conf to add the flag to specify two portals
and to turn on debug.

2012-09-08 Thread Dave Gilbert
OK, so it sounds like most of the machine is working, just something in the
installer is broke - so the quesiton is what,
could you try and get more of the logs onto this bug report.

Could you try and attach:
   * The full output of dmesg
   * Any other logs from /var/log that look interesting, there might be a
specific installer.log and that would be good.

[Bug 1047998] [NEW] iscsi root: iscsi not started in initramfs

2012-09-08 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu server daily disk; 20120908 (amd64)

I have a kvm guest which is diskless, I've done an install (off CD image) onto
an iscsi disk (that's provided by another VM running tgt).
But it won't boot after install (maybe related to 881388?)
(Host is Quantal as of today but with 3.5.2-030502 to get around bug 1045027)

The install goes apparently fine; I tell it the IP of the target, pick the
(only) target, and there's no auth.
I just pick openssh-server as the only item of task to install.

I boot, bring up iPXE's command prompt (with ctrl-b) and enter:
dhcp net0
sanboot iscsi:192.168.122.10:::1:iqn.2008-09.com.example:server1.share1

and it brings up grub and starts to boot and eventually lands at the
initramfs prompt saying it can't find the root volume.

Using rescue mode I can see a lot of

ipconfig: no devices to configure
and
/scripts/local-top/iscsi: .: line 505: can't open '/run/net-*.conf'
(it's right there isn't any)
and *then* I see the messages about the networking coming up and finding a link.

If I manually ifconfig the interface and run /scripts/local-top/iscsi
it brings it up and I can continue the boot and it boots OK.

This happens with the network interface configured as e1000 and
hypervisor default (8139 something)

I'll attach the VM config from the host.

[Bug 1045027] [NEW] iPXE kills kvm with KVM: entry failed, hardware error 0x80000021

2012-09-02 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

This is a regression - I was using iPXE last night just fine on the same
hardware (an i7-860)

I've got a guest (xml attached) with no discs that I'm trying to
netboot, but as soon as iPXE starts I see:

iPXE (PCI 00:03.0) starting execution...

and it stops - the libvirt log shows:

KVM: entry failed, hardware error 0x8021

If you're running a guest on an Intel machine without unrestricted mode
support, the failure can be most likely due to the guest entering an invalid
state for Intel VT. For example, the guest maybe running in big real mode
which is not supported on less recent Intel processors.
