[Bug 280193] [NEW] [intrepid regression] laptop lid close no longer detected

2008-10-08 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

My laptop (a HP530 : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HP530 )
detected the lid close currently in Hardy, but when I recently upgraded
to the Intrepid beta, it no longer detects closure of the lid. There is
no change in the output of dmesg when the button is pressed.

I'm not sure about what information would be required to track down this
bug, so please let me know and I'll be happy to provide it. I have
attached the output of a lshal to start with. Let me know what else
might be useful.

[Bug 278883] [NEW] [intrepid beta] totem doesn't load playlists

2008-10-05 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When I try to open a text .m3u playlist file with totem, it complains
that it cannot open the playlist with the message: GstDecodeBin: This
appears to be a text file. The following messages are also output to
the console:

** Message: Error: This appears to be a text file
gstdecodebin.c(1657): type_found (): /play/decodebin3:

The particular playlist was just a one-file-per-line playlist I
generated using shell scripts:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:05:45--
[~]$ listpodcasts.sh ~/docs/podcasts | grep -iv mp3 | cut -d' ' -f4

** Message: Error: This appears to be a text file
gstdecodebin.c(1657): type_found (): /play/decodebin0:

I also get the same error if I try and open the playlist file from the
menus, rather than passing it on the command line like above.

[Bug 267332] [NEW] [needs-packaging] osmosis openstreetmap planet utility

2008-09-06 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu already has the JOSM package to help edit openstreetmap.org data
and the gosmore application for using the OSM data, so it might be
useful to add the osmosis package that can be very helpful in
manipulating large OSM datafiles.

On the osmosis page on openstreetmap.org's wiki
(http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Osmosis) osmosis is described
thusly:

Osmosis is a command line java app for processing OSM data. The tool
consists of a series of pluggable components that can be chained
together to perform a larger operation. For example, it has components
for reading from database and from file, components for writing to
database and to file, components for deriving and applying change sets
to data sources, components for sorting data, etc. It has been written
so that it is easy to add new features without re-writing common tasks
such as file or database handling.

[Bug 199775] Re: Add Australian tuxpaint stamps to repository

2008-08-25 Thread David Dean
I downloaded the zip file from the website listed above, and it contains
a LICENSE file that indicates the images are licensed under GPLv2. I'm
not sure if the GPL can actually be used to license data rather than
source code, but you can't say that there is no licensing information
available.

What do we require from the author of these stamps so that we can
include them in our repositories? Perhaps I can chase the author down
and see if it can be forthcoming.

[Bug 259294] [NEW] Evince takes a long time, cpu to render document

2008-08-19 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Occassionally with some pdf documents evince seems to take a very long
time to render pages (and sticks at 100% cpu usage while doing so too).
In this case it appears to be happening with some pdfs exported from
openoffice impress. I'm not sure if this is a bug in evince, or in
openoffice's export, or both - but it seems likely to be evince to me.

I will attach the pdf that has this problem. I don't seem to have any
trouble viewing this pdf in Adobe Acrobat 6.0 in Windows, but both
evince and xpdf seem to have problems.

[Bug 245068] [NEW] apt-get doesn't say why build-dependencies cannot be satisfied

2008-07-02 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to install the build-depends for the audacity project on
Ubuntu Hardy Heron, and I get:

[~]$ sudo apt-get build-dep audacity
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Build-dependencies for audacity could not be satisfied.

Shouldn't more information be provided about *why* the dependencies
cannot be satisified, so that the problem can be diagnosed easily? There
doesn't seem to be a verbose or debug mode for apt-get to return this
information.

You can run 'apt-cache showsrc audacity' to look at the build depends
and run an apt-install with those dependencies to find:

[~]$ apt-cache showsrc audacity

Build-Depends: cdbs (= 0.4.4), debhelper (= 5.0.0), gettext, libasound2-dev
[!kfreebsd-i386 !kfreebsd-amd64 !hurd-i386], libexpat1-dev, libflac++-dev,
libgtk2.0-dev, libid3tag0-dev, libjack-dev, libmad0-dev, libogg-dev (=
1.0.0-1), libsamplerate0-dev, libsndfile1-dev, libsoundtouch1-dev,
libvorbis-dev (= 1.0.0-3), libwxgtk2.6-dev, zip

[~]$ sudo apt-get install cdbs debhelper gettext libasound2-dev libexpat1-dev
libflac++-dev libgtk2.0-dev libid3tag0-dev libjack-dev libmad0-dev libogg-dev
libsamplerate0-dev libsndfile1-dev libsoundtouch1-dev libvorbis-dev
libwxgtk2.6-dev zip
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
debhelper is already the newest version.
gettext is already the newest version.
gettext set to manually installed.
libexpat1-dev is already the newest version.
zip is already the newest version.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libasound2-dev: Depends: libasound2 (= 1.0.15-3ubuntu4) but 1.0.16-0ubuntu0.1
is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Couldn't apt-get have just reported this in the first place when I asked it to
get the build-depends. Why did I have to manually copy the build-depends
packages into an apt-get install line to find this out.

*** Note that this bug is not about the problem with libasound2 also
shown above (which probably is and may already be listed as a bug), but
the problem with apt-get build-deps not giving sufficient information to
diagnose a package conflict when it arises. ***

[Bug 241535] [NEW] ipythonrc should be setup for LightBG color scheme by default

2008-06-19 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ipython

As IPython is most likely to be used by ubuntu users in gnome-terminal,
which uses a white background by default, the IPython color scheme
should also default to a light background color, otherwise syntax
highlighted python code becomes mostly invisible as the main portion of
the code is colored foreground white.

Currently the relevant portion of the ~/.ipython/ipythonrc file looks
like this:

...
# colors - Coloring option for prompts and traceback printouts.

# Currently available schemes: NoColor, Linux, LightBG.

# This option allows coloring the prompts and traceback printouts. This
# requires a terminal which can properly handle color escape sequences. If you
# are having problems with this, use the NoColor scheme (uses no color escapes
# at all).

# The Linux option works well in linux console type environments: dark
# background with light fonts.

# LightBG is similar to Linux but swaps dark/light colors to be more readable
# in light background terminals.

# keep uncommented only the one you want:
colors Linux
#colors LightBG
#colors NoColor
...

To work best in gnome-terminal on ubuntu, the LightBG option should be
uncommented, and Linux commented:

...
# keep uncommented only the one you want:
#colors Linux
colors LightBG
#colors NoColor
...

[Bug 238275] [NEW] mythbuntu-lirc-generator has problems with playpause buttons

2008-06-08 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythbuntu-lirc-generator

I have a DVICO_MCE remote control with a single play/pause button.
However, the ~/.lirc/mythtv file generated by mythbuntu-lirc-generator
has two entries mapping the play/pause button to the 'P' action. Because
of this any attempt to pause an playing video doesn't work as it
unpauses as soon as it is first paused.

The simplest workaround for this problem is to edid the ~/.lirc/mythtv
file to remove the second mapping and the problem goes away. From
looking at this file this appears to be a problem with other DVICO
remotes as well. I'm not sure what cases the underlying mythbuntu-lirc-
generator program to create two versions of the play/pause mapping, but
I would guess that the combined play/pause button is the source of the
confusion.

[Bug 238032] [NEW] lircd doesn't find dvico usb IR remote device correctly (expects /dev/lirc)

2008-06-06 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lirc

A while back my DVICO usb (sometime during gutsy) remote stopped
working, and I have only got around to fixing it on my upgraded hardy
system.

It appears that the dvico usb remote creates a device on
/dev/usb/hiddev1, but lircd expects the remote to be on /dev/lirc , and
as a result I could no longer control my mythbuntu installation with the
remote control.

After a bit of googling ( http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_LIRC
#DVICO_FusionHDTV_DVB-T_Plus_IR_Remote ) and 'cat /dev/usb/hiddev1'
revealed the real address of the remote. In order to work around this
problem I edited /etc/lirc/hardware.conf and replaced REMOTE_DEVICE=
with REMOTE_DEVICE=/dev/usb/hiddev1.

I've only got irw to work at this stage, but getting the media centre
control back shouldn't be too hard from here in.

I'm not sure what files may be useful in diagnosing this problem, so
please let me know what would help and I can add it here.

[Bug 230588] [NEW] Allow image to be opened directly from gnome-screenshot

Public bug reported:

My normal workflow with taking screenshots involve first saving the file
to the Desktop, then going to the desktop to do something with the file,
such as open in eog to print or GIMP to edit. Surely, it would be useful

[Bug 229470] [NEW] cegcc needs packaging

2008-05-12 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

The CeGCC software available at http://cegcc.sourceforge.net/ is very
useful for developing native Pocket PC applications without having to
run Microsoft's development software on a Windows Machine. It would be
useful to have an ubuntu package available to make installation of this
development environment easier.

Upstream, the CeGCC team appear to prefer releasing their packages as
i386 (RPM) binaries, as The sources of CeGCC are also available, but
they're big. We believe that those who want to build from source are
probably the same people who will want to keep up to date, so they will

Given this, it would be especially useful to be able to just apt-get
installl cegcc to get everything across easily. At the moment, the
easiest option appears to be installing the RPMs using alien (howto

[Bug 221893] [NEW] MyPasswordSafe package needs updating

The version of mypasswordsafe in the (hardy) ubuntu repositories is
listed as 20050615-2

[Bug 159414] Re: skip forwards is different than skip backwards

2008-01-08 Thread David Dean
It seems this is by design. But I still feel it should at least be
mentioned in the menus as it is not obvious and can take some getting
used to

From http://www.gnome.org/projects/totem/ :

Q: Why does seeking with the keyboard keys (Left and Right arrow) in Totem not
seek the same amount of time in either direction?
A: This is on purpose. To find a particular point in a film, most people will
seek forward and then realise that they've gone too far. Seeking back, if it
used the same amount of time, would mean going back to where they last seeked
from. You can experiment with pressing Ctrl or Shift along with the arrows to
seek further, or closer (respectively).

[Bug 159414] Re: skip forwards is different than skip backwards

2007-12-20 Thread David Dean
I'm pretty sure it happens for any file. I have tried it with mp4s avis
and mp3s and the same think happens for all of them. One minute
forwards, 15 seconds back.

I've kind of gotten used to it now, and If it is by design I could
probably put up with it, but it still seems a little counterintuitive.

My normal skipping technique has become go forward until I'm past where
I want and the back a few times to fine-tune, which seems sort-of
logical I guess. Perhaps it should just be documented in the menus so
'Skip Forward (60s)' and 'Skip Backwards (15s)' instead of just 'Skip
Forwards' and 'Skip Backwards'.

[Bug 159414] skip forwards is different than skip backwards

2007-11-01 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

'Skip Forwards' in totem skips 1 minute, but 'Skip Backwards' only goes
back 15 seconds. This seems counterintuitive to me, at at least should
be configurable in some manner, as the 1 minute skip is a bit long for
watching short video podcasts, such as skipping ads in Boing Boing TV or
webalert.

15 seconds in both directions may be a good amount for this type of
content at least. Maybe the (default) jump size should be based on the
length of the video.

[Bug 94339] Feisty will not mount partitions without UUID in fstab

2007-03-21 Thread David Dean
Public bug reported:

Using the old /dev/hdaX device path no longer works in Feisty, after
kernel update to 2.6.20-12-generic.

I have /home on a seperate partition, so for me this was a show stopper.

In 2.6.20-11 this fstab works fine:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# file system mount point type options dump pass
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
# /dev/hda5
UUID=2efaefbd-172b-45a6-b679-3bbf7e8e1179 /   ext3
defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/hda6
UUID=7cd0dfc6-089d-4e33-be1a-cd90fcd0a6f1 noneswapsw
  0 0
/dev/hdc/media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/hda7/home ext3defaults,errors=remount-ro 0
 1

But in 2.6.20-11 I have had to put in the UUID for /dev/hda7:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# file system mount point type options dump pass
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
# /dev/hda5
UUID=2efaefbd-172b-45a6-b679-3bbf7e8e1179 /   ext3
defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/hda6
UUID=7cd0dfc6-089d-4e33-be1a-cd90fcd0a6f1 noneswapsw
  0 0
/dev/hdc/media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
#/dev/hda7
UUID=499146e1-504d-4ed1-8b93-878940b5c4a4   /home   ext3

oh, and when this fails, it is not a silent fail -- an attempt to fsck
is made for some reason, and this fails (there appears to be no

Re: [Bug 94339] Re: Feisty will not mount partitions without UUID in fstab

2007-03-21 Thread David Dean
This was changed in feisty recently then? Edgy/Feisty have had no problem
with my fstab up until about a week ago (yes, it was edited by hand a while
back).

If no-one else is impacted, then it's a non-issue - but it would be nice to
have something fix up the fstab file before throwing errors on next boot.
Although maybe most people haven't manually edited fstab.

More a case of knows enough to cause problems perhaps?

On 3/22/07, Tim Gardner [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

The UUID abstraction happened during the transition from dapper--edgy.
I suspect you have edited /etc/fstab by hand. Now that Feisty uses
lib_pata, you must use UUID or /dev/sdX names.

RHN style Satellite Server for Ubuntu

2007-03-05 Thread David Dean
Hi,

Is anyone working on an centralized server management system for Ubuntu?

The basic functionality being distributing commands over groups of
servers, checking patch levels remotely, centralized health-checks,
and so on. In large install bases this is quite handy - and it would
be great if it were possible to simply mirror the common repos and
then farm them out internally (which can be done, but not easily
enough that it's click-and-point).

I am thinking of starting on some scripts to achieve RHN-style
management of multiple machines, unless this can already be declared a
solved problem?

Thanks,
David

[Bug 66004] Re: .bash_profile is not sources when X session starts

2007-01-03 Thread David Dean
Having just wasted half an hour of my life trying to work out the
reasons that ~/.bash_profile is not sourced .. I can't find one.

All I wanted was my bin directory working:

# set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists
if [ -d ~/bin ] ; then
PATH=~/bin:${PATH}
fi

Which seems simple enough (and is the default behaviour if
~/.bash_profile is being sourced).

For now I have popped that line into /etc/bash.bashrc .. but that's a
suboptimal solution if you've got something more tricky you want to
happen at login for a single user.

I can't see the downside of sourcing ~/.bash_profile?
