I'll be happy to help if I can. It doesn't sound like Canonical is
providing much support, any more.

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour for 11.04.22

2022-11-05 Thread James Bradley
I'm afraid it's not immediately clear to me how to proceed with Ubiquity. I
can tell you the following: I used a USB drive with Kubuntu 22.04.1 to make
the install. The install went smoothly, and I did choose the option to
install third-party software, but as the installer never made a wifi
connection, I'm sure the point was moot. The Asus L210 has no Ethernet.

After the installation, everything is working fine except the networking.
Network manager shows no available connections, and System Settings only
reports two loopback addresses under Network Interfaces. That's about all I
have at this point.

I was hoping to make it this evening, but things don't look promising at

Happened to have run across anything involving drivers for an Asus L210?

[Ubuntu Oregon] Feeling abandoned?

Disconsolate over the end of Unity? Or, just looking for a good time
with open source, in a warm, nurturing environment? Then come to
tonight's Salem Ubuntu Hour at the Broadway Commons Coffeehouse
, at 1600 NE Broadway, Salem, from
6 to 7 pm.

Today I came down with a really bad cold, so I don't expect I'll be in
great shape by Friday. Also, my Chromebook is currently bricked, perhaps
permanently, so I don't have a computer.

 Hi Oregubuntarians!
 (did I spell that correctly?)

LibreOffice is returning to OSCON this week,
 and we're looking for a
few more awesome people to help staff our booth.

 WHEN:

 Tuesday, July 21
 5:00PM - 6:00PM (Reception)

 Wednesday, July 22
 10:00AM - 4:30PM
 5:40PM - 7:00PM (Booth Crawl)

 Thursday, July 23
 10:00AM - 5:00PM

 SKILLS:
Experience with LibreOffice and other FOSS
 products like Ubuntu is a
plus, but a helpful and positive attitude is
 much more important.

In addition to talking about LibreOffice,
 we'll be showing-off our
printed user manuals, demoing LibreOffice to
 interested users, and
 handing out stickers.

Did you know that LibreOffice runs on Android?
 We currently have a
LibreOffice Viewer, and are currently adding
 editing capabilities.

 DURATION:
We're pretty flexible -- it'd be great for
 people to volunteer 3+
hours over the 3 days that the expo hall is open.

 PERKS:
As a member of the booth team you'll get an
 Official LibreOffice T-shirt.

 CONCLUSION:
If hanging out at a booth and telling everyone
 about the latest news
about LibreOffice and Free Software sounds

sure to get you set up
with a pass, etc. We'd love to have you on board!

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] team blog

2014-11-19 Thread James Bradley
Having recently moved our local paddling group's web stuff to a
wordpress.com site, I can say it's really pretty painless. I had been
hosting the group's materials on my old commercial site, but am letting
that go at the end of the year. One advantage of Automattic's
wordpress.com service is that they do all the updates for you. The
disadvantages accrue more to commercial sites than to a simple blog or
non-commercial site. Among the disadvantages are an
entity.wordpress.com URL, no choice of plugins, and no ability to
modify the underlying PHP code. The big advantage is, of course, free
is a very good price. WordPress software also has a pretty good range
tools for maintaining contributor accounts, eliminating spam, etc.

For reference, the site I'm referring to is
http://currentreading.wordpress.com/ The only page that was a pain to
build was the River Conditions page, but along the way I learned some
tricks to simplify the process. I only started the conversion a couple
weeks ago, so it isn't quite feature complete, yet. You might want to
note that the Paddle Trip FAQ and Participantship pages are just MS
Office HTML output, cut and pasted into a WP page, (there is plenty of
extraneous crap in the code, but it's effortless to produce and displays
okay). I imagine LibreOffice output would fare at least as well.
Personally, I do my HTML in Geany, edit it locally, then paste it into a
WP page, but not everyone is HTML conversant.

Currently, no one really casually runs into us and I think that would
be a good thing to try to have.

Planet Ubuntu is only for individual blogs or project blogs they
do not do LoCo's AFAIK but LoCo.ubuntu.com http://LoCo.ubuntu.com
 does ofc

IIRC correctly most of our traffic came from search or Ubuntu Forums
LoCo.ubuntu.com http://LoCo.ubuntu.com sent very little traffic.

I should point out that until I was aware that the team needed a
leader that I didn't even know what LoCos were, let alone that there
was an Oregon team, despite being a contributor for many years. I'm
 probably not the only one.

Shucks that's a shame as at one point we were one of the most active
in North America but before the Oregon Team existed there was also the
PNW LoCo which was Washington and Oregon combined but the Governance
disbanded it and forced LoCo's to choose states. As a result both
Washington and Oregon become pretty inactive.

Then Dan and Thomas both gave it a go and ran the LoCo for sometime
but Dan left for the Army and Thomas I think did not have enough time?
Time always seems to be the thing.

That being said, I've looked into the notion of aggregating our posts
via something like Yahoo Pipes, but I discover now that on Planet
Ubuntu this means it will link to the Pipes feed and can't be
redefined to point at some other site.

So I'm kind of leaning towards the idea that we actually have a blog
blog with various authors who can contribute to it. I guess we get a
Drupal website with the Canonical hosting³. Any Drupal lovers out
there can confirm that we can get a well-formed RSS feed out of it? I
know enough about Drupal to know that we can have a bloggish kind of
 thing.

I believe Canonical by default uses WordPress for LoCo's but I would
also encourage you guys to find a sponsor and self-host it might save
you headaches when it comes to upgrades, waiting on things etc.

Most LoCo's get hosting on their own because it is easier.

 Anyone excited about blogging?

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] new logo awaits your approval

2014-11-08 Thread James Bradley
It doesn't matter much to me, though the intent was more of a melding
than an eclipsing. The logo without the text hasn't seen much use, so
I'm not sure a new variant would either. There's no reason both versions
shouldn't be available, though.

The green/orange thing was intentionally Duck/Beaver oriented. I
couldn't figure a good way to include yellow and black, though.

Which is fine. I could certainly try to get permission from Canonical,
but if no one likes the logo any better than the old one, c'est la vie.

I have but one request, then, if you are all amenable. That being a
version of this where the Ubuntu logo is inside the state and not
 eclipsing it:
 https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-us-or/+junk/logos/view/head:/LoCo_logo02-1.svg
 https://bazaar.launchpad.net/%7Eubuntu-us-or/+junk/logos/view/head:/LoCo_logo02-1.svg
Hopefully that's not outside the guidelines! :-)

I will admit there's one thing I really like about the old logo: it's
orange and green, so it allows for both Beavers and Ducks ;-)

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu-us-or Digest, Vol 151, Issue 2

2014-09-10 Thread James Bradley
On the issue of hosting an independent Ubuntu Oregon website, you might
want to consider Automattic's free WordPress hosting. In case you aren't
familiar with that service, let me elaborate.

Automattic is a primary vendor of WordPress-based hosting and products.
They offer free hosting under a wordpress.com URL. WordPress offers a
number of advantages, along with some limitations.

On the plus side, with WordPress site maintenance is greatly simplified.
In the case of Automattic's offering, they take care of updating all the
software. WordPress itself is extremely easy to implement and manage.
Designed to facilitate blogging, it also supports more presentational
formats. It allows for granular permissions to accommodate multiple
authors and administrators. The ability to control comments and limit
spam is well designed. A wide variety of themes are offered and many
incorporate responsive design characteristics, allowing for hassle-free
support of multiple device parameters.

On the downside, WP is bloated and not particularly efficient. It is
written in PHP and some customizations require at least a superficial
knowledge of that rather arcane and inefficient language. Additionally,
properly implementing customizations requires some knowledge of WP's
internal functioning. In some cases, it is difficult to prevent
customizations from being overwritten by updates. For the most part,
these considerations only affect the primary administrator of the site.

So, there it is, for your consideration.

OK I was just trying to make the URL simpler for cases where someone is

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu-us-or Digest, Vol 151, Issue 2

2014-09-10 Thread James Bradley
The only advantages I'd see, offhand, are independence and local
control. The wiki markup language used at Ubuntu is obscure and only
slightly less arcane than Hittite, making customization problematic.
There would also be fewer hoops to jump through in giving people access
rights. On the other hand, I'm not sure how Canonical would feel about
us using the Ubuntu name on something they didn't fully control.

 finally came to me: TinyURL.

tinyurl.com/ubuntuoregon now points to the Ubuntu Oregon wiki. It isn't
case sensitive, so it should be easy for anyone who needs to type it in.
The only thing is, TinyURL didn't ask for any verification, validation,
login or registration; so I don't know what the process would be if it
ever needed to point somewhere else.

I'd imagine that people would want to print these flyers on their own so
that they can easily resupply locations in their area. In which the use
of color photos may result in poor looking copies. Perhaps there could
also be one with black and white photos?

Additionally, I wonder if distributors of the flyer may want to add
individual contact information to it for example I might add my email
address. (As one person is more approachable than a whole mailing
list.) In which case perhaps leaving some blank room for that would be
 a good idea.

The color issue came up early on and the decision was to go with full
color for quality and the immediate use at hand, OSCON. It's easy enough
to substitute B/W photos, though these photos are dark, without a lot of
contrast, and probably won't reproduce well in B/W. I've had to work the
original images quite a bit, with contrast and other filters, to get the
results you see. In other words, what we really need is better photos,
but it is what it is.

I've made some B/W copies of the images, which can be used if desired.
It might make more sense to go all B/W, but I think this is a bridge to
cross when we come to it. New photos or new copy can be substituted as
available, but I think we should finish this up, first.

I've moved the URL at the bottom of the ~ Home section, to allow for the
application of an adhesive label.

Open Source Government Petition

2012-01-31 Thread James Bradley
The We the People portion of the whitehouse.gov site has posted a
petition calling for government to reduce spending by employing open
source software. The petition can be found at: http://wh.gov/kCq

To my mind, government using open source is just good business sense. As
you may know, the whitehouse.gov site is hosted on Drupal. Still, there
is no broad mandate that encourages agencies to consider open source
solutions. If you agree there should be such a mandate, I would suggest
you add your name to the petition.
