[Bug 1847776] [NEW] Certbot fails auto-account creation via ACMEv1 protocol

2019-10-11 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

The certbot agent on 18.04 LTS is too old to automatically create
accounts at LetsEncrypt. When trying to run something like:

certbot certonly -m s...@example.com -n --agree-tos -d www.example.com

The following message is returned and no cert is generated:

acme.messages.Error: urn:acme:error:unauthorized :: The client lacks
sufficient authorization :: Account creation on ACMEv1 is disabled.
Please upgrade your ACME client to a version that supports ACMEv2 / RFC
8555. See https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/end-of-life-plan-for-
acmev1/88430 for details.

During October, this will happen when LetsEncrypt is running an ACMEv1
"brownout". See https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/end-of-life-plan-
for-acmev1/88430 for details.

No newer version is available in bionic-backports.

[Bug 1319501] [NEW] Login doesn't report errors

2014-05-14 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

When Drupal 7's BlogAPI module has MoveableType enabled, but not
Blogger, the XML RPC method blogger.getUsersBlogs is not available.
Drivel attempts to log in, hits this error and stops. Done is
reported in the status bar, but the editor window is never opened. To
the user, there was no error, but no success either.

Running drivel from the command line shows the error Drivel-Message:

Some sort of error should be reported to the user.

[Bug 1294268] Re: Touch selection applies to wrong monitor.

2014-04-04 Thread John Franklin
I'm able to get similar behavior without an external monitor. If I open
two Terminals, I can move one by touching the titlebar and dragging my
finger across the screen, as expected. When I try to drag the other
Terminal window, the first one moves, even if my finger is nowhere near
the first window.

If I tap the second window, it will get focus, as expected. If I then
try to touch and drag the second (now focused) window, the first one
receives focus and moves.

Using the touchpad and/or mouse does not demonstrate this behavior.
Only the touch screen gives me trouble.

I'm running Ubuntu Gnome and Gnome Shell on an Acer V5-122p.

[Bug 1094555] Re: deluge crashed with EOFError in /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gobject/__init__.py: EOF read where object expected

Fixed this by going to synaptic, searching for installed 'python', and
reinstalled all of them. Consequently, this also fixed a similar
problem with Miro.

This problem is most likely specific to this one circumstance due to
system crash. Feel free to mark this as some sort of non-issue.

[Bug 668589] [NEW] ldap authentication fails to connect for a straight bind

2010-10-29 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mediawiki-extensions

System: Karmic
Package version 1.6
Expected: successful sign-on
Actual: Inability to connect to LDAP server and searches for cn=Resource id
#72 when it should be cn=jsmith

There are two basic programming bugs that cause this bug to happen.

1. The function $this-connect() sets the $this-ldapconn as a side-effect and
returns nothing, but the caller attempts to assign the returned (nil) value to
$this-ldapconn.
2. A call to getSearchString() incorrectly sends ($this-ldapconn, $username)
when the function is expecting only ($username).

Apply the attached patch to fix both.

[Bug 644578] [NEW] gettext required by package scripts, but not a dependency

2010-09-21 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openssl

When recently upgrading libssl on an Ubuntu Hardy Linode VM, the
following message was displayed:

Indeed, gettext is not installed on this VM. Perhaps it should be
included as a dep here? Or (since it's liikely to be the case for a
number of packges) a dep on update-notifier?

[Bug 470776] Re: retry remote devices when parent is ready after SIGUSR1

2010-04-01 Thread John Franklin
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: mountall

- Hi,
+ Hi,
I have a similar problem like in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mountall/+bug/461133 . My NFS-Shares
are not mounted at boot time. But I don't think both problems have the same
cause.
I think my problem is more related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mountall/+bug/446678 , but I'm not
sure.

  Release: Ubuntu 9.10

  This is what happens:
  - Grub (still old Grub) line is: /vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
root=/dev/mapper/system-lvgggroot ro quiet splash
  - root is mounted readonly due to Grubline
  - After Network is up, mountall receives SIGUSR1 (as expected)
  - At this time root is not yet remounted RW and NFS-Shares cannot be mounted:
- usr1_handler: Received SIGUSR1 (network device up)
- try_mount: /Bignfs waiting for /
- try_mount: /Backnfs waiting for /
- usr1_handler: Received SIGUSR1 (network device up)
- try_mount: /Bignfs waiting for /
- try_mount: /Backnfs waiting for /
+   usr1_handler: Received SIGUSR1 (network device up)
+   try_mount: /Bignfs waiting for /
+   try_mount: /Backnfs waiting for /
+   usr1_handler: Received SIGUSR1 (network device up)
+   try_mount: /Bignfs waiting for /
+   try_mount: /Backnfs waiting for /
  - After root is remounted, NFS-Shares will not be mounted as they are waiting
for SIGUSR1
- try_mount: /Bignfs waiting for device gigakobold.daheim:udatanoback
- try_mount: /Backnfs waiting for device gigakobold.daheim:udataback
+   try_mount: /Bignfs waiting for device gigakobold.daheim:udatanoback
+   try_mount: /Backnfs waiting for device gigakobold.daheim:udataback
  - mountall will continue running
  - Sending SIGUSR1 manually will get everything mounted and mountall exits
normally

So the problem is: Mountall doesn't remember having SIGUSR1 (i.e. network up)
already received.
So if there is a problem with NFS-mounts while signal from network up is
received and the NFS-filesystems cannot be mounted at this time, later retries
will not work, too.

  Regards
  Markus

[Bug 174712] Re: Unable to logout, shutdown, restart, etc when Mythfrontend is running

2009-09-29 Thread John Franklin
DarioFreije, I would rather have the problem resolved instead of trying
to keep up with a script (I am not a proficient programmer) from one
version of Ubuntu to the next. That is the same set up I have,
secondary screen is a TV with mythfrontend running on it with the power
to the TV normally off. Thank you for the script suggestion, though.
In return, I will share something I learned sort of script-like I learn
with this set up. I have a gnome-panel quick launcher mythfrontend
-display :0.1 to open MythTV on the TV screen. Don't know if it will
work for you though.

[Bug 174712] Re: Unable to logout, shutdown, restart, etc when Mythfrontend is running

2009-08-05 Thread John Franklin
This is affecting me since Jaunty update. I started with Intrepid, so I
do not know if my hardware would have mimicked the behavior before
Intrepid.

I am able to use
   $ gnome-session-save --force-logout
to replicate the behavior before upgrading to Jaunty. I am not a programmer,
so I do not even know what SIGQUIT is, but --force-logout side-stepping it and
using something more hefty which could possibly hurt things.

Since there have been changes with fast-user-switch-applet, the issue
may reside there. Sorry for the delay, was chasing a rabbit (this is a
joke or pun for those who are having this translated).

[Bug 174712] Re: Unable to logout, shutdown, restart, etc when Mythfrontend is running

2009-08-05 Thread John Franklin
I am truly losing patience with this one. The MythTV people say this is
expected behavior and it is not their fault. When typing
killall -vs 1 mythfrontend.real
It works. Does not work for 10 (USR1), 13 (PIPE), 17, 18, 19. However, the
problem was not replicated. Typed:
pkill -1 mythfrontend
And got the same results. I lost my patiences with going through all the
numbers and opening it back up, so I did not go any higher than 19 (SIGSTOP).
So, from the command line I tried to replicate a signal of SIGQUIT (3) to
mythfrontend.real and could not get it to reproduce the problem like it does
when FUSA logout option is used.

Also, added killall mythfrontend.real to ~/.bash_logout without any change.
The signal sent to mythfrontend is causing it to respond in a manner which is
canceling a running shutdown (shutdown -c). The problem is replicated by
gnome-session-save --logout
gnome-session-save --shutdown-dialog

But, as stated above,
gnome-session-save --force-logout
works as expected. What gives? What scripts or whatever are running which
would cause this problem? What is the signal which is being sent from
gnome-session-save --logout to mythfrontend?

Sasquatch, I did not notice a problem like that. However, when I did
set the volume in the playback section of navucontrol I noticed it
screwed with the volumes of the output devices. Sounds similar, but not
quite the same. At any rate, this is not a big issue for me. I realize
Ubuntu is moving toward the latest version of pulseaudio and that it
will consume the time of the programmers who can help with audio. Maybe
it would be better to help with the future (which relieves the problem I
was having) release and not only help the release, but also get my
problems solved at the same time. I am sorry it did not work for you.

2009-05-16 Thread John Franklin
Okay, I finally figured out how to dump to a file. The
daemon/pavucontrol crash around line 538 which says

Soft CPU time limit exhausted, terminating.
E: cpulimit.c: Received request to terminate due to CPU overload.

Is there no information or interest in this bug/problem at this time?

[Bug 373450] Re: Pulseaudio crashes with pavucontrol

2009-05-16 Thread John Franklin
Sasquatch, see if this helps any, go to terminal and type:
pulseaudio -k; pulseaudio -vvv ~/pa.log 21
This will output ~/pa.log until pavucontrol is opened and crashes pulseaudio.
Would you post that pa.log file here? I cannot tell you much about pacmd
because the literature is vague, but pacmd maybe able help a little. It is a
cli for pulseaudio daemon. Caution, when entering and exit the pacmd
environment, will cause pulseaudio daemon to exit and restart. Can use pacmd
help for help instead of pacmd --help.

[Bug 372647] Re: Clock and Weather applet don't show any weather info

2009-05-11 Thread John Franklin
Okay, I found System - Preferences - Network Proxy. The settings are the
same as my desktop Ubuntu installation. Are this the settings you were
referring to?
Also, I have deleted the ~/.gconf/system.bak, so I do not have a means to
recreate the problem. I apologize for not keeping it for diagnostic reasons.
I also checked the Synaptic Package Manager and found no extra proxy
configurations or settings as compared against my desktop. The desktop is a
more recent installation, but had it since before December 2008.

[Bug 372647] Re: Clock and Weather applet don't show any weather info

2009-05-10 Thread John Franklin
Not intentionally. I do not need proxy settings, everything thing is taken
care of by my firewall/NAT/dhcp server. I may have installed something which
uses proxy settings or a proxy configurator in the past and not know what it
was. This computer is the first I converted to Ubuntu (started with 8.04) and
installed a few things when I first started which have since been removed.
How would I check proxy configurations?

[Bug 372647] Re: Clock and Weather applet don't show any weather info

2009-05-09 Thread John Franklin
Success! I searched for [ubuntu gnome weather report configuration] on
Google and returned this page
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/49736. I changed
~/.gconf/system to ~/.gconf/system.bak and logged out and back in. And this
resolved it for me.
My ~/.gconf/system (now ~/.gconf/system.bak) had the following directories in
it:
gstreamer
http_proxy
networking
proxy
I am going to delete the system.bak directory now. The recreated
~/.gconf/system only has the directory networking in it. This might have
been due to installing and uninstalling firestarter in the past, I am not sure.
Hope this helps someone.
John

Yes, I do use network manager and it is connected.

2009-05-08 Thread John Franklin
Nope. Changing the location in weather report applet or deleting and adding
the location in the clock applet does not make it work.
However, I did rename ~/.gconf to ~/.gconf.bak and it worked and lost all of my
other settings. After renaming ~/.gconf.bak to ~/.gconf the problem persists.

This problem also exists when the onboard sound (ALi Corporation M5455 PCI

~/.pulse ~/.asound* and /etc/asound.conf. This might have been a problem from
before upgrading to Jaunty, but I did not use pavucontrol before the upgrade.
I would have included the output from pulseaudio -vv but it was too long and
scrolled out of the gnome-terminal history buffer. If there is a way to dump
pulseaudio -vv in a txt file and would be helpful, please let me know. I am
including
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/user.log
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf
/etc/pulse/default.pa
Are there any other files which might be helpful?

[Bug 307373] [NEW] package mythtv-backend 0.21.0+fixes18722-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127

2008-12-11 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

Happened again--this is the second time, the other bug report number is 307367
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/307367
Did not report this in the other one, sorry:
1) Ubuntu 8.10 (other desktops are installed Kubuntu, UbuntuStudio, and
Xubuntu, oh and Mythbuntu) running in GDE
2) Not certain, using MCC to install Primary Backend from No backend
3) Ummm...
4) It crashed :(

I still have not figured out how to get this to work. I was having trouble
switching it from Secondary Backend to Primary Backend so I uninstalled
using Synaptic everything with mythtv and mysql (which did not force
removal of dependencies) in the name.
Then searched and deleted all folders and files with the name mythtv using
gksudo nautilus and search.
Rebooted
Reinstalled Mythbuntu with http://mythbuntu.org/download/getmythbuntu.php (this
was successful)
Then opened MCC and tried to change to Primary Backend from No Backend

It is late and I am very tired. Will try to figure out what I can do to
fix this tomorrow with your help. Thanks.

For your amuzement, I have attached the Mythbuntu Error logs file to
this bug.

[Bug 176326] Re: [HARDY] Wont' work with KVM switch

2008-10-31 Thread John Franklin
I tried what you suggest some time ago and also the other mouse
protocols. Unfortunately, none resolved the issue.

I've not heard from the development team since trying the Alpha5
release. Is this problem still under investigation?

I've tried the Alpha5 release (as a CD) and I'm afraid that the mouse

[Bug 176326] Re: [HARDY] Wont' work with KVM switch

2008-08-14 Thread John Franklin
OK, I managed to do this via SSH and attach the log which should show up
the erratic movement of the mouse and a couple of button presses.

Incidentally, if we can't fix this today I'll be away for 2 weeks so
there'll be a pause.

[Bug 257214] [NEW] Video mode wrong with KVM switch

2008-08-12 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

If the Ubuntu machine is not selected on the KVM switch at the time,
Ubuntu boots up with low-definition video instead of that last used or
set through preferences. Windows machines work OK.

My KVM switch is a Starview SV411, purchased 18 months ago.

I first reported this bug as part of Bug 176326, which also dealt with a
mouse/KVM problem, but was asked to report it separately.

Can you please tell me where to find the kernel boot line. Also how to
unload/reload the psmouse module. I'm not that familiar with Linux yet.

I'll submit a separate bug report for the video problem.

[Bug 176326] Re: [HARDY] Wont' work with KVM switch

2008-08-12 Thread John Franklin
None of the three psmouse.proto parameters made any difference on the
boot line. I can't try loading and unloading while the mouse is
connected through the KVM as the desktop is unusable.

The attached file is the result of the echo commands, but please note
that this was done with a mouse connected directly, not through the KVM,
for the same reasons given above.

[Bug 176326] Re: Wont' work with KVM switch

2008-08-11 Thread John Franklin
I've carried out the requested checks and the result files are attached.

I've since discovered that the keyboard fault is only present when the
mouse is connected via the KVM switch. If I connect the mouse directly,
the keyboard is OK. However, the video problem occurs irrespective of
how the mouse is connected.

The bugzilla 4564 may be related but is not identical. My problem occurs
from boot up - it appears that 4564 occurs only after changing the KVM.

[Bug 176326] Wont' work with KVM switch

2007-12-14 Thread John Franklin
Public bug reported:

Since Dapper, Ubuntu hasn't worked with my KVM switch, or those of others
judging by forum messages.
The mouse is unusable, moving very erratically and selecting items without
pressing any buttons.
The keyboard adds characters to what is typed.
If the Ubuntu machine is not selected at the time, Ubuntu boots up with
low-definition video instead of that last used or set through preferences.
I've tried more than one mouse/track ball. My KVM switch is a Starview SV411,
one year old.
