I'd vote for "Copy Memory to tmpfs".

Doing nothing is clearly not the right solution.

For me, suspend / resume works perfectly with the nvidia xorg driver,
but suspend doesn't do anything with the open source / wayland driver.

[Bug 1926127] Re: Gnome-web crashes immediately when typing in address bar

2021-07-04 Thread Julien Olivier
I finally found the culprit: the bug came from a local custom-made
website (http://localhost/...) I had visited before and that contained a
favicon.ico with PNG data in it (instead of ICO data). The favison.ico
was in my cache, and anytime I typed an address containing "local",
Epiphany crashed.

After removing the cache and fixing the issue in the favicon, the bug
disappeared.

[Bug 1926127] Re: Gnome-web crashes immediately when typing in address bar

2021-04-26 Thread Julien Olivier
OK, after tinkering a bit, I think I have found a way to reproduce it
easily: it seems that the browser crashes whenever you type something
that matches one of the URIs stored in the browser's history. So the
crash is probably related to the address bar's auto-completion /
suggestions.

After further investigation, the bug is in Gedit (or GTK?), not in

data copied from gedit) in LibreOffice either. If I close gedit and open
it again, I can copy / paste from Gedit to Firefox (or LibreOffice)
again.

[Bug 1901295] Re: python3-chardet breaks install of python-chardet

2020-10-29 Thread Julien Olivier
Hi Paride,

I've just reported this bug for the record, and with the ope that it
could help other people with the same problem. As to me, I have already
found a workaround: my Python2 doesn't really depend on python-chardet,
but on python-requests (which itself depends on python-chardet). So i
"fixed" it by creating my own "python-requests-with-chardet" package
which includes both python-request and python-chardet modules. This way
I can install my application without generating a conflict with
python3-chardet.

If no proper solution can be found in Debian/Ubuntu, feel free to just
close it WONTFIX.

[Bug 1901295] Re: python3-chardet breaks install of python-chardet

2020-10-28 Thread Julien Olivier
PS: just to be clear: what I really mean is that, if python3-chardet was
split into a "python3-chardet" (with only the module), and a "chardet"
package (with only the binaries / manpage), it would then be possible
for a third party to provide a "python-chardet" without the binaries /
manpages that would also depend on "chardet". The new "python-chardet"
(for python2) would of course not need to be maintained into Debian.

[Bug 1901295] Re: python3-chardet breaks install of python-chardet

2020-10-28 Thread Julien Olivier
I analyzed the two packages and I think I found the reason why they
break each other: both contain /usr/bin/chardet and /usr/bin/chardetect
(as well as the associated man pages).

So, a possible solution could be remove those two binaries, and their
man pages from both python-chardet and python3-chardet, and create a new
package "chardet" on which both would depend.

Of course, this is just a suggestion, and I'm pretty sure the package
maintainer is well aware of the situation and has his own reasons not to
split the packages.

[Bug 1901295] [NEW] python3-chardet breaks install of python-chardet

2020-10-24 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to install python-chardet (for python-2.7), but it fails

[Bug 1875005] Re: [amdgpu] Launching apps on the Nvidia GPU via PRIME does not work (in the presence of an integrated amdgpu)

2020-04-29 Thread Julien Olivier
Daniel,

there are actually two bugs here: the first one being that 3D
acceleration doesn't work out of the box using Ubuntu's installation of
the Nvidia driver through "additional pilots": for that to work, you
need to add “Option “PrimaryGPU” “Yes”” to
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf.

The second bug is that, once this configuration fixed, it's impossible
to easily switch between integrated card and dedicated card without
rebooting (either through prime-select or with the new gnome-shell's
shortcut).

Let's say that this report is about the 2nd one, and I've opened a new
report for the first one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1875794

[Bug 1875794] [NEW] Only AMD GPU works on laptop with hybrid AMD / Nvidia GPUs

2020-04-29 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop with both AMD Raven and Nvidia GTX 1050 video adapters.
After installing the nvidia-driver-440 package through Ubuntu's
additional drivers" tool, only the AMD GPU could be used.

To fix this, I had to add “Option “PrimaryGPU” “Yes”” to
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf

[Bug 1875005] Re: 3D acceleration not working with NVidia driver

2020-04-28 Thread Julien Olivier
With the help of Nvidia support, I found out that disabling nvidia-
persistenced makes it possible, now, to switch between Nvidia and AMD
drivers (intel prime profile) by using prime-select. But this demands a
reboot between each switch. And, after using "prime-select intel",
gnome-shell's option to "start a program using the dedicated video
adapter" isn't available anymore.

Actually, I’ve just found out that adding “Option “PrimaryGPU” “Yes”” to
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf made the 3D acceleration (and
nvidia-settings) work! However, now, I have no way to switch between AMR
Raven and GTX: it always uses the GTX.

[Bug 1875005] [NEW] 3D acceleration not working with NVidia driver

2020-04-25 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop with both AMD Raven and Nvidia GTX 1050 video adapters.
I wanted to test the new game mode in Ubuntu 20.04, and noticed that
only the AMD Raven actually works. To do the test, I tried launching a
terminal and running gxgears, both in a normal way, and then using the
"start using dedicated video adapter" (or whatever it really is in
English) option in gnome-shell.

Using the standard video adapter (probably the AMD Raven), it works, but slowly.
Using the dedicated video adapter, I get the following:

juloliv@juloliv:~$ glxgears
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 152 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_GLXCreateContext)
  Value in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 25
Current serial number in output stream: 26

NB: in both cases, I tried launching nvidia-settings and got the
following:

juloliv@juloliv:~$ nvidia-settings

ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system

(nvidia-settings:9213): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 12:33:29.270: g_object_unref:

And then a blank window...

[Bug 1754125] Re: Rhythmbox stays running in the background after quit

2020-02-11 Thread Julien Olivier
Paul, the "Stop & Quit" action is certainly a plus, but it doesn't solve
this precise bug report, as there still is a case where "Rhythmbox stays
running in the background after quit" (if you just close the window).
I'm not the one to decide whether or not this is the desired behaviour,
but I just think that the "Stop & Quit" action is only a workaround for
this bug.

[Bug 1754125] Re: Rhythmbox stays running in the background after quit

2020-02-11 Thread Julien Olivier
@Paul White

The problem is that, in gnome-shell, if you close Rhythmbox while music
is playing, Rhythmbox's icon simply disappears. So, there is no way to
reach this "Stop & Quit" quickmenu option. Unless I'm missing something,
of course...

[Bug 1754125] Re: Rhythmbox stays running in the background after quit

2020-02-11 Thread Julien Olivier
This behaviour might me perfect in the default Ubuntu desktop (gnome-
shell + Unity plugins), but it's broken if you use upstream gnome-shell
because there is no tray to control Rhythmbox from once closed.

I understand that Ubuntu's focus is on the default experience, but I
guess it's also important to make it easy to use alternatives
(especially when the "alternative" is actually upstream's default). So,
wouldn't it be possible to detect whether the desktop has a "tray" (or
"indicator" or whatever it's called in Unity), and really quit Rhythmbox
on close if it doesn't?

[Bug 1853961] [NEW] Nautilus segfaults while transferring files via SFTP

2019-11-25 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

Every time I try to transfer a large file (or several small files) via
Nautilus/SFTP, it ends up failing after a minute or so (connection
closed).

For example, I tried the same transfer twice, and got the following log:

[505587.786931] gvfsd-sftp[23481]: segfault at 1 ip 0001 sp

If I try the same transfer using Filezilla, it completes flawlessly.
Also, before Ubuntu 19.10 / Nautilus 3.34, I didn't have any problems
with the same server either.

2019-05-09 Thread Julien Olivier
I have gnome-calendar installed on Ubuntu 19.04, and gedit is still
displayed as the only available choice in the default app settings. The
workaround was to run the following: gio mime text/calendar
org.gnome.Calendar.desktop

Now gnome-calendar appears as the default (and only) calendar app...

[Bug 1828491] [NEW] gnome-calendar not listed as a calendar app in default app settings

2019-05-09 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

Gnome-Calendar doesn't appear in the list of default apps for calendar
in gnome settings. This is probably due to the fact that, in the
.desktop file, the "text/calendar" mime type is not registered?

Anyway, a workaround exists: just type "gio mime text/calendar
org.gnome.Calendar.desktop".

2018-08-13 Thread Julien Olivier
Sorry Daniel, I don't understand what you need. The bug occurs
immediately after I try to launch totem:

juloliv@juloliv:~$ totem
Gdk-Message: 10:52:39.290: totem: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily
unavailable) on X server :1.

There is no particular "context": it crashes all the time, as soon as
it's launched, and there is no log to attach that I know of.

I tried steps 1, 2 and 3, but it doesn't change a thing: the crash

[Bug 1780475] [NEW] Fatal IO error 11 on startup

2018-07-06 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

Whenever I try to launch totem, I get the following error:
Gdk-Message: 20:51:41.044: totem: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily
unavailable) on X server :1.

Then, it just crashes.

This bug only occurs when using the Nvidia binary driver. However, even
using the Nvidia binary driver, it doesn't occur on VLC.

[Bug 1775967] [NEW] Wrong temperature after suspend

2018-06-09 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

My laptop's temperature is stuck at 40°C after resume from suspend, but
only for the acpitz-virtual-0 sensor:

soc_dts0-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:+71.0°C

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:+40.0°C (crit = +105.0°C)

soc_dts1-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:+70.0°C

coretemp-isa-
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +68.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1: +68.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 2: +68.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 3: +68.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

Before suspend, acpitz-virtual-0 displays the correct value, but after
suspend it stays at 40°C forever, resulting in the fan to stay off all
the time, and, thus, to the laptop overheating.

Hi,
that would be great if that could work this way. But the problem is
that, if you dedicate a workspace to each task, when you click on an
application that you don't have opened on the current desktop but have
opened on a different workspace (for a different task), gnome-shell
moves you away from your current workspace instead of opening a new
window of that application. And that breaks this paradigm. Too bad,
really!

Re: 18.04: Ubuntu GNOME --> Ubuntu ?

2017-04-05 Thread Julien Olivier
Hi,

I personnally love the fact that Ubuntu GNOME is almost the upstream
GNOME, and not a custom version with lots of extensions and
modifications. I really fear that Canonical will not settle on upstream
GNOME, at all. So, in this case, we might still need Ubuntu GNOME.

By the way, that might even be bad news for Ubuntu GNOME because when
Canonical moved away from GNOME, they also stopped breaking GNOME, but
they might go back to their bad habits, and it might become very hard
to have a proper Ubuntu GNOME without their patches... I hope I'm wrong
though.

[Bug 1484399] Re: Network connection drops on RTL8723BE after some time

2015-08-15 Thread Julien Olivier
I've read on a forum that the bug is due to power management issues in
the WiFi driver. So I tried modifying /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
with following options: options rtl8723be fwlps=0 swlps=0 ips=0

I'm not sure which options are doing what, but that seems to work now...

[Bug 1484399] [NEW] Network connection drops on RTL8723BE after some time

2015-08-13 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

On my laptop, the WiFi connection works well for a few minutes, then
stops working completely, although nework manager shows the icon as
connected, but I can't ping any address... If I press the airplane
mode button ON et OFF again, the network comes back, and then, a few
minutes later, the problem occurs again.

[Bug 1484307] [NEW] Stuck in airplane mode after suspend

2015-08-12 Thread Julien Olivier
Public bug reported:

On my HP Pavilion laptop, every time I suspend, then resume my laptop,
I'm stuck in airplane mode (no bluetooth, no wifi). If I press the
airplane button, nothing changes. If I reboot, my wifi and bluetooth
come back, and the airplane mode goes away... until I suspend / resume
again.

Here is the output of rfkill list all:

 * Before suspend:

0: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

 * After suspend:

1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes

Notice that, after suspend, there is not hci0 entry anymore!

Also not that I don't really carre about bluetooth but I really want to
find a way to get my wifi back after resume without having to reboot
every tme...

Thanks!

Re: Feedback Time

2015-06-26 Thread Julien Olivier
Yes, sorry, my explanation lacked an important detail: I reckon the
GNOME developers wanted to use generic names for first-party apps only
(and thus, for one and only one app for each task). Third party apps are
still displayed using their real name.

I might be wrong though, or GNOME developers might also have changed
their strategy since the last time I checked...

I believe there is a middle point for this:

 Gedit text editor
 Nautilus file manager
 Firefox web browser

If someone names simply Web browser to Epiphany, how is named
Firefox?? In a bad names strategy, user could see this in an
 applications menu:
Web browser - This is Firefox (you must know)
Web browser - This is Mirori (you must know)
Web browser - This is Icecat (you must know)
 ...no sense.

It's very difficult for casual (or new) users this other extreme in a
 bad names strategy:
Sylpheed - This is an e-mail software (you must know)
Evolution - This is an e-mail software (you must know)
Geary - This is an e-mail software (you must know)

  Hi Bart, list,

the thing with names is that it's better when they actually *mean*
something. An experimented user will immediately know that Firefox is a
web browser or that Evolution is an email program. But normal users will
have no clue about it :) Some apps use names that provide clues as to
what the purpose of the app is, like Rhythmbox or Gedit, but most don't.

I think the recent trend among GNOME developers is that the app name is
more like an internal code, not aimed at being used in the user experience.

Maybe a good way to fix your problem would be to have a Launch in
terminal entry in the app's dash icon, next to New Window and Add to
favourites, possibly as a GNOME Shell extension ?

This problem is worse with localized UI.

Yes. It makes no sense to name something File Manager instead of
Nautilus when Nautilus is a name you can love and a brand name.
Kubuntu (KDE) just puts a like subtitle next to the real name in the
menu to describe it. I don't think File Manager (or whatever) makes
much sense and you cannot love it. Only the most mediocre computer
users do not know what file manager or anything with a name is and
some of them don't even know what the button web is supposed to do
(in a kiosk computer). You can't really cater to them. Those users
can't use Linux anyway. People who have to learn how to use a mouse
and who cannot make double-clicks without moving the mouse too much
(it happens all too common). I don't think that should be your target
audience. A proficient computer user that cannot use a mouse and does
not know what a file manager icon is supposed to do -- they can never
use linux. They couldn't use Windows. You'd only give them a Mac, at
best. I feel it is catering to the lowest common denominator.

Personally I think Gnome would be at least twice as good if they got
rid of those confusing names when there are good names for those
  programs already.

  Just my opinion, as well.

   Hi,

I have been running Gnome desktop under Ubuntu since 11.04. I did not
like Unity and did not like the Gnome fallback. Tried Elementary OS for
a while and came back to Ubuntu Gnome because they are so slow to
   release Freya.

The new Gnome in 15.04 seems snappier and I like it. I could care less
about the cutting edge, latest Gnome, I just want it to run. I am in the
process of upgrading my computers from 14.04 to 15.04. 2 down and 2 to
go. There are some kernel improvements in 15.04 which help a couple
issues I was having with 14.04 (1 is that network manager is somewhat
broken in 14.04.2 The via_velocity module will not reconnect to the lan
after suspend and another is with wifi on my laptop.)

Stuff that does not work or does not work 'correctly' in 15.04, IMO:

1. I can no longer unload a module at suspend time. I know this is a
kernel problem and not Gnome, but it is a problem for me. I used to
be able to do this with 13.04, but since 12.04, I can no longer get
it to unload the aic7xxx module before suspending. No matter what I
put in the |/etc/pm/config.d/modules, it will not unload. As soon as
I try to use that module, the kernel panics
