[Bug 1751508] Re: Xwayland crashed with SIGABRT in OsAbort() from AbortServer() from FatalError() from InitOutput()

2018-09-13 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Very similar error occurs in Xubuntu 18.04:

 Description:
Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in OsAbort()

 Stack Trace:
  __GI_raise(sig=sig@entry=6)
  __GI_abort()
  OsAbort()
  ??()
  FatalError()
  xf86PostProbe()
  InitOutput()
  ??()
  __libc_start_main(…)
  _start()

 StacktraceTop:
  OsAbort()
  ??()
  FatalError()
  xf86PostProbe()
  InitOutput()

 Laptop Model:
  Lenovo Thinkpad P51s

 Kernel:
  4.15.0-34-generic x86_64

The error typically pops up after I lock my laptop with an external
monitor plugged in the HDMI port.

There are no Errors in XorgLog nor in XorgLogOld, warnings only about
missing /usr/share/fonts/X11/...

Not using third party proprietary display driver.

Please advise.

[Bug 1158562] Re: system will not start after updating to kernel 3.5.0-27

2013-04-09 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Xubuntu 12.10
Upgraded today (2013-04-09).
New kernel will hang with a blank screen.
Ran the same kernel in recovery mode: got a dmesg log.
Running the previous 3.5.0-26 works.
It looks like the i915 driver crashes, but I can not be sure.

Host is a Lenovo T530.

[Bug 1158562] Re: system will not start after updating to kernel 3.5.0-27

2013-04-09 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Work-around for Lenovo T530:

The host has dual video adapters: an Intel integrated low-power and an NVidia
discrete high-performance.
The host has a special (AFAIK Windows-Only) mode with both video adapters
running (one one stand-by) to be toggled by the OS. The mode is called 'NVidia
Optimus' in the BIOS settings.
With 'NVidia Optimus' the kernel crashes (or blanks-out).
With 'Integrated' the kernel boots (and chooses i915 driver).
With 'Discrete' the kernel boots (and chooses whatever nouveau/nv/nvidia is
available).

So for the work-around: choose to use the Discrete OR the Integrated
video adapter.

The proposed patch adds support for suggesting registered .so libraries when

[Bug 1010095] Re: Droid Sans Mono is not exactly monospace

2012-10-01 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Libre Office is just for the display.
Other products (like the Terminal!) use the font and having improper attributed
style leads to a very poor experience.

If there is no bold/italic etc. form of the font, I fail to see the
reasoning to make it the default monospace font in the first place...

Since the UI to map fonts has been nerfed (in Xubuntu at least you can
only specify a default font) I was forced to manually edit my
~/.fonts.conf to set monospace to 'dejavu sans mono'. I do not mind
editing configuration files, but I sincerely believe a smart default
here would negate such a need in the first place.

The absurd view of my code editor (with monospace that is not mono-
spaced) is a constant reminder of this issue.

[Bug 885114] [NEW] Aptitude fails to report correct package status on search

2011-11-02 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 «aptitude search» reports wrong and
inconsistent package states.
The search operation shows packages as not installed, when they are. It also
shows different state of one and the same package, depending on the search term.
When using «aptitude show» the package states are shown correctly to the best
of my knowledge, but I can not be certain any more.

This bug wreaks havoc with any scripts that rely on mass-processing
packages using statuses from «aptitude search»

[Bug 154744] Re: When screen is locked, the default language for password entry should be the user's default language

2011-09-12 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
This bug persists in Lucid Lynx, Maverick Meerkat, Natty Narwhal and Oneiric
Ocelot (release candidate).
To make matters worse, occasionally the keyboard layout indicator shows default
layout, but the input is NOT in the default layout. The user has to change
layouts multiple times until it's changed to the default and shows so.
I am not sure whether I can lock my account out this way, and frankly I'm not
eager to try...

[Bug 664985] Re: Background color leaks to next row when scrolling

2011-08-23 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
It was a b*tch to get the ocelot running on any of my machines.

However I have successfully replicated the issue in the Alpha 3 version using a
Live-USB.
1. Create a Live USB (not CD)
2. Boot from it.
3. Try without installing
4. Open terminal
5. Type: ls -l /

Since the Live-USB does not have a vmlinuz and initrd.img in /boot the symbolic
links in the root are broken, and have a dark background.
The first try shows colour bleeding on the /vmlinuz symbolic link, subsequent
ls -l in the same terminal show colour bleeding on the initrd.img link too.

[Bug 452681] Re: Cannot access reboot menu from keyboard

2011-08-23 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
It was hard to make an ocelot installation without mangling my current
configuration.
The gdm log-in screen is not available in an Live-USB or Live-CD environment.

I can confirm, that there is no (easy) way to access the shut-down/restart menu
with the ocelot's gdm theme.
There is an awful work-around by using CTRL-ALT-TAB to switch to the panel, and
possibly navigate using tab and navigation keys in order to focus the power
button.

[Bug 575806] Re: Seahorse should manually manage keyboard layout

2011-05-19 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
The behaviour is STILL experienced in Ubuntu 11.04.
I have made no comments and updates since I've seen no work done on this issue.
Still very easy to reproduce with gnome-terminal and ssh.
Much harder to reproduce, but much weirder is reproducing it with Thunderbird +
Enigmail + GPG. Occasionally I get the authentication pop-up without focus, but
yet getting my keystrokes, the keyboard layout shows US, but the keystrokes are
translated as if the layout that's active in Thunderbird was used. Needless to
say multiple authentication failures are a serious nag.

2011-05-16 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Public bug reported:

I have two instances of the applet: one for eth0 and one for wlan0.
Upon login randomly, but mostly always one or both applets crash, and a message
offering to remove the applet is displayed, occasionally two of these messages
are presented.
The .xsession-errors contains what seems to be a clue:
** (gnome-panel:3065): WARNING **: Failed to load applet
 OAFIID:GNOME_NetstatusApplet:
 failed to get Bonobo/Control interface:

Uname:

 No LSB modules are available.

I am not sure whether this can be related to the fact, that the
interface is being connected by the Network Manager, at the time of
applet initialisation. I lack the knowledge to further test.

[Bug 627347] Re: Package removes old wallpapers that I am using

This has been a nag for me for a long time.
The worst part is I used background from Lucid until I decided to try the

As an alternative maybe old backgrounds can be included in newer package
versions.

[Bug 664985] Re: Background color leaks to next row when scrolling

2010-10-24 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Brian, it seems that the amount of text wrapped has something to do with this
behaviour's exhibition.
Please try with shorter links, that would wrap just a few characters.
See the attached image. However if I follow the reproduction path the bug does
not show.
Please try again with a shorter link. I am using 'Standard Colors' and 'Rxvt'
colour theme.

[Bug 664985] [NEW] Background color leaks to next row when scrolling

2010-10-22 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

The background (and possibly foreground) colour leaks to the next row
when the output forces the terminal to scroll down while wrapping the
coloured text.

Reproduction is relatively easy:
1. Open terminal.
2. Create a link to a missing file with a long path, so that it needs to wrap.
  ln -s /path/to/some/very/long/and/definitely/missing/file sample
3. List the file (long format with color)
  ls -ln sample
4. Continue listing until the terminal fills up, and starts wrapping and
scrolling at the same time.
5. Observe the new lines background colour.

[Bug 590128] [NEW] PC/SC Omnikey Handler is missing the hotplug script

2010-06-05 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pcsc-omnikey

The original drivers from the manufacturer's site contain among other things a
script that is called from the udev rules file.
Namely the inappropriately named ok_pcscd_hotplug.sh.
According to the driver's installation procedure this file is to be copied into
the /lib/udev directory.
The /etc/udev/rules.d/z98_omnikey.rules contains request to run this script
upon detecting any of the supported usb readers.
SUBSYSTEM==usb, ... ACTION==add, RUN+=ok_pcscd_hotplug.sh

Without this file the USB reader is not detected when inserted, and a
manual reload/restart of the pcscd is required, that requires
administrative privileges.

Looking at the script it seems to make some effort to call pcscd
--hotplug, that forces detection of the newly inserted reader.

Please either add this file to the package, or rework the rules file to
call pcscd --hotplug.

[Bug 575806] [NEW] Seahorse should manually manage keyboard layout

2010-05-05 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

The pop-up window for entering passwords to unlock PGP/GPG keys or SSH keys has
wicked way of handling alternate keyboard layouts.
Possibly the focus-stealing-prevention may have an impact on the behaviour.
I've tried excluding seahorse from the focus-stealing-prevention by using
Compiz Settings Manager, and adding !(class=Seahorse-agent) to the list of
windows mapped for focus-stealing detection.

It does not follow the 'Separate layout for each window' preference
strictly. Sometimes it pops up with the default layout (expected
behaviour), other times it pops up with the layout currently selected in
the invoking application window.

Main problem: Thunderbird + Enigmail, SSH in console, GPG in console
(seems to always take the current layout from the terminal).

An additional extra would be to have a keyboard-layout box in the UI, similar
to the one when unlocking the screen-saver.
I am reporting this to Seahorse, because that is where I find it most obvious,
it is possible, that this bug is more general. The screen saver suffers a
similar problem, but has a keyboard-layout indicator.

[Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-10-12 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
I don't think putting either patch into the public release would be smart.
Neither patch fixes the defect, rather both provide a work-around at a cost.
The wrong part is that since both patches target the XOrg server itself the
cost would have to be paid by any user, regardless of whether he/she uses the
defective drivers.
I have not seen any similar defect notes with a different driver, that leads me
to believe the problem lies within the driver, not XOrg.

Even though I am affected by this bug I would rather drop using visual
effects (or use the integrated Intel VC), rather then imposing negative
effect to the other Ubuntu users.

Is there any way this issue can be resolved WITH Ati/AMD, rather then
DESPITE Ati/AMD?

[Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-10-05 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Prabhakar: You're probably missing a BIOS setting to expand the Flat
Panel view. Check your BIOS settings.

People!
I am using Ubuntu 9.04 AMD64 on a Lenovo T500, with dual video:
- an Integrated 'Intel'
- a 'Discrete Graphics Adapter: ATI Radeon 3650 (Mobility HD)

Due to many problems with the ATI drivers I am inclined to use the
slower, but better supported Intel video (it has different problems).
The BIOS allows me to turn the ATI off and use the integrated Intel,
which is what I am doing now.

I am following this thread, and while I am not willing to sacrifice stability
using the No-Back-Fill (due to memory leaks), I was wandering if the
Clear-Rather-Than-Back-Fill displays similar problems.
I am also a bit cautious, since the provided patches touch the XOrg server
itself. If something goes wrong I fear I may end up with a system that will not
be revert-able to a working condition.

Is there any way I can test this using a Live CD and patch on-the-fly?

[Bug 334991] Re: Eclipse takes 100% CPU with New Wave theme

2009-04-28 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
Hmmm... After reading Dilomo's notes I checked #320097 and #318621.
While reading https://bugs.launchpad.net/anton/+bug/320097/comments/7 and below
I realized, that the problem arises due to my using a specially crafted
supplemental gtk-rc file used to compact the UI in eclipse, since the default
look (on all GTK themes) is very sparse and clunky.
The compacter gtk-rc works fine with the Human-Clearlooks (and Dust Sand for
that matter) theme, but when used in combination with the New Wave theme
exhibits 100% CPU.
Running Eclipse without the compacter gtk-rc does not raise CPU usage with the
New Wave theme.

Daanemanz: Can you please check if Lotus Notes Client does not come with
a supplemental GTK RC?

If I comment-out the GtkToolbar::internal-padding = 0 line in my gtk-rc CPU
usage drops, but the interface becomes clunky, pity.
However the GtkToolbar::internal-padding = 1 'fix' did not work for me, I had
to use GtkToolbar::internal-padding = 2, which is utterly strange.

I am still wondering if this has something to do with the fact, that there is a
progress bar in a tool bar in Eclipse, very small, just a couple of notches. I
am eager to test away, because I like the theme, but I am not going to
sacrifice usability for viewing pleasure.
I am willing to post my compacter gtk-rc, or screen shots if needed.

[Bug 334991] Re: Eclipse takes 100% CPU

2009-04-25 Thread Lachezar Dobrev
I am using Eclipse stand-alone, not from package, but I am observing the same
behaviour.
A quick test revealed, that the problem exists with the New Wave theme, but
does not occur with the Human-Clearlooks theme. Haven't tried other themes.

To reproduce start Eclipse with the New Wave theme, Eclipse takes 100% CPU, use
the control panel to switch to Human-clearlooks, and after a brief delay CPU
usage falls down, then you can turn back to New Wave theme.
This behaviour tends to reoccur after the back-and-forth theme switching can't
pinpoint the reason though.
I have an unconfirmed hunch, that this behaviour occurs when an unbound
progress bar is displayed (the one that moves back-and-forth). Such a progress
bar is available upon start-up, and also with CVS/SVN operations, possibly
others.

Since I updated to 8.10 I lost the volume change display, and only the

Upon booting into Ubuntu Bluetooth is always on indiscriminate of what the
