[Bug 1632357] Re: remove llvm-toolchain-3.6 from zesty

2016-11-02 Thread Louis Bouchard
The debian clamav development team has dropped llvm-3.6 dependancy from
the latest clamav (soon to be merged) :

  * Drop llvm supported for now. The bytecode will be interpreted by clamav
instead of llvm's JIT - there is loss in functionality. It will come back
once we llvm support again (Closes: #839850).

So my suggestion is to drop it once the latest clamav is merged

[Bug 1629644] Re: Trusty: failure to detect device with 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.5

2016-11-02 Thread Louis Bouchard
Hello,
The patches added between those two versions are not maintained in git but are
quilt patches applied above the same source code found in
multipath-tools_0.4.9.orig.tar.gz.

You could do something similar to a bisection by following these steps :

# sudo apt-get install ubuntu-dev-tools devscripts
# sudo apt-get build-dep multipath-tools
# mkdir bisect
# cd bisect
# pull-lp-source multipath-tools 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.4
# pull-lp-source -d multipath-tools 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.5
# debdiff *dsc > newpatches.patch
# cd multipath-tools-0.4.9
# patch -p1 < ../newpatches.patch
# quilt pop -a
# quilt push -a
# quilt pop 41

This will bring your source package to the patch level of
0.4.9-3ubuntu7.4. You can run the following to test that the created
package does work : build the binary packages with the current set of
quilt patches applied.

# dch -rm
and add a suffix to the version number using the ~ marker. This will make sure
that the version is lower than the 7.5 version in the archive

multipath-tools (0.4.9-3ubuntu7.5~test1) trusty; urgency=medium
# sudo fakeroot debian/rules binary

Install the packages with the 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.5~test1 version and verify
that your environment still works.

Then iterate over each new patch added between 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.4 and
0.4.9-3ubuntu7.5 by doing the following :

# quilt push
# dch -rm
multipath-tools (0.4.9-3ubuntu7.5~test2) trusty; urgency=medium
# fakeroot debian/rules binary

Install & test

When you get a package that doesn't work in your environment, it means
that the last patch applied is causing your failure. You can identify
the patch with :

# quilt applied | tail

The last one in the list is the patch you are looking for.

You may want to use LXC containers to create your build environment as
this will install a sensible amount of packages.

[Bug 1626269] Re: Ubuntu 16.10: kdump is not working in 4.8 kernel.

2016-10-26 Thread Louis Bouchard
Hello,

Here is an update on the situation.

I completed a kernel bisection between 4.7.8 and 4.8-rc1 (15 kernel
builds) and identified the kernel commit that causes the problem :

commit 021182e52fe01c1f7b126f97fd6ba048dc4234fd
Author: Thomas Garnier
Date:   Tue Jun 21 17:47:03 2016 -0700

x86/mm: Enable KASLR for physical mapping memory regions

Add the physical mapping in the list of randomized memory regions.

The physical memory mapping holds most allocations from boot and heap
allocators. Knowing the base address and physical memory size, an attacker
can deduce the PDE virtual address for the vDSO memory page. This attack
was demonstrated at CanSecWest 2016, in the following presentation:

  "Getting Physical: Extreme Abuse of Intel Based Paged Systems":

https://github.com/n3k/CansecWest2016_Getting_Physical_Extreme_Abuse_of_Intel_Based_Paging_Systems/blob/master/Presentation/CanSec2016_Presentation.pdf

(See second part of the presentation).

The exploits used against Linux worked successfully against 4.6+ but
fail with KASLR memory enabled:

https://github.com/n3k/CansecWest2016_Getting_Physical_Extreme_Abuse_of_Intel_Based_Paging_Systems/tree/master/Demos/Linux/exploits

Similar research was done at Google leading to this patch proposal.

Variants exists to overwrite /proc or /sys objects ACLs leading to
elevation of privileges. These variants were tested against 4.6+.

The page offset used by the compressed kernel retains the static value
since it is not yet randomized during this boot stage.

Signed-off-by: Thomas Garnier
Signed-off-by: Kees Cook

As you can see, this modification is specific to the x86 architecture
which is why you don't see the issue.

In parallel to that, a patch to fix this situation has been published
yesterday to the makedumpfile mailing list and is currently under review
by the main developper :

 https://www.mail-archive.com/kexec@lists.infradead.org/msg16628.html

There is a debian bug opened for this issue :
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=842019

While I understand your concern, I cannot push a modification that will
trigger makedumpfile to generate dozen of error messages and a
potentially unusable vmcore to all of the x86 world in order to satisfy
only one architecture.

It is important to remember that, while makedumpfile fails, the kernel
dump capture mechanism reverts to using 'cp' to copy /proc/vmcore
uncompressed so this vmcore file is still usable for analysis.

Hopefully, we should get an ACK for the upstream bug soon, so I can push
a new package to Debian. I will then proceed with the synchronization to
Zesty and SRU to the other stable releases.

I hope that this clarifies the situation.

Kind regards

[Bug 1626269] Re: Ubuntu 16.10: kdump is not working in 4.8 kernel.

2016-10-20 Thread Louis Bouchard
Hello,

Not at the moment : simply adding this commit allow makedumpfile to run
but it generates many other error messages that are currently
investigated. There is an incompatibility between makedumpfile and 4.8
kernels that make the result of makedumpfile unreliable.

I am currently working with upstream on identifying and fixing the
issue.

Kind regards,
Louis

[Bug 1629644] Re: Trusty: failure to detect device with 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.14

2016-10-13 Thread Louis Bouchard
Hello,

Then the problem is not a regression introduced in 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.14.

The only difference between 7.5 and 7.6 is :

  * debian/patches/0043-alloc-keywords.patch: fix uninitialized keywords
vector for configuration parsing for when there is no multipath.conf file
present.

 -- Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre   Tue, 06 Oct 2015

You might want to investigate the configuration differences in the case
where you are not using a multipath.conf file.

[Bug 1629644] Re: Trusty: failure to detect device with 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.14

2016-10-04 Thread Louis Bouchard
Hello,

Could you please make sure that you update the initrd.img file and
reboot the server (if possible) ?

$ sudo update-initramfs -u

A sensible amount of modifications (63 separate patches) have been
applied between version 0.4.9-3ubuntu7 and 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.14 on trusty,
such as this one :

  * Allow device detection all through the initramfs: run multipathd instead
of only scanning once for devices, so those that come up slower can still
be used as a root device (LP: #1526984)

Please let us know if regeneration of the initrd.img file and a reboot
fixes the issue that you are encountering.

The Launchpad site having difficulties, I don't know if the email bridge will be
sufficient to reach you.

The kernel team has asked to see if you could test the kernel in the
following PPA :

  ppa:canonical-kernel-team/unstable

The kernel version is 4.8.0-17.19 and it is the kernel which may potentially
make it to the image. So if you can verify if the crc32c issue is present or not
on the ppc64el, this would be very helpful.

Kind regards,

[Bug 1625667] Re: Trusty: apt does not try next mirror if index file download fails with mirror:// source

2016-09-23 Thread Louis Bouchard
** Description changed:

- When using the mirror://mirrors.ubuntu.com/mirrors.txt functionality on
- Trusty, if the download of the index file fails, apt will not retry on
- another archive listed in mirrors.txt and will fail.
+ [SRU justification]
+ This fix is needed to allow correct archive mirroring functionality.
+
+ [Impact]
+ Without this fix, apt-get update and other apt commands requiring Package
file access may fail when there are remote transient errors due to archive
availability.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Use std::npos instead of 0 to test presence of "Translation" in ShortDesc.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1) Setup three containers (archive1, archive2, archive3) with a reprepro
configuration mirroring the ubuntu restricted archive (to save on space and
time to replicate).
+ 2) Add an apache webserver serving the reprepro archive over http on each
container
+ 3) Add the following mirrors.txt file to one of the webserver (archive1):
+ $ cat /var/www/html/mirrors.txt
+ http://archive1/ubuntu/
+ http://archive2/ubuntu/
+ http://archive3/ubuntu/
+ 4) Add a client container. Add the IP adresses of the archive[1-3] containers
to /etc/hosts. Alias the archive1 address to archive.ubuntu.com similar to the
following :
+ $ cat /etc/hosts
+ 127.0.0.1 localhost
+ 10.0.4.182  archive1mirrors.ubuntu.com
+ 10.0.4.127  archive2
+ 10.0.4.193  archive3
+ 5) Add the following line to the /etc/apt/sources.list, commenting all other
entries :
+ $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
+ #deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main
+ #deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty-updates main
+ #deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty universe
+ #deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty-updates universe
+
+ deb mirror://mirrors.ubuntu.com/mirrors.txt trusty restricted
+ 6) Run
+ $ apt-get -oDebug::Acquire::mirror=true update
+
+ The log should display for the Packages file :
+
+ MirrorMethod::Fetch()
+ Failure to get
http://10.0.4.193/ubuntu//dists/trusty/restricted/binary-amd64/Packages
+ Err http://10.0.4.193/ubuntu/ trusty/restricted amd64 Packages
+
+ With the fix you will see :
+
+ MirrorMethod::Fetch()
+ Failure to get
http://10.0.4.193/ubuntu//dists/trusty/restricted/binary-amd64/Packages.gz
+ TryNextMirror:
http://10.0.4.127/ubuntu//dists/trusty/restricted/binary-amd64/Packages.gz
+
+ [Regression]
+ None expected. Worse that can happen is a retry when none was done previously.
+
+ [Original description of the problem]
+ When using the mirror://mirrors.ubuntu.com/mirrors.txt functionality on
Trusty, if the download of the index file fails, apt will not retry on another
archive listed in mirrors.txt and will fail.

  Running the following on Trusty leads to the following result :

[Bug 1625667] Re: Trusty: apt does not try next mirror if index file download fails with mirror:// source

2016-09-23 Thread Louis Bouchard
Julian,

first of all, you are right, I did mix up the series, I'll fix that.

Now, Michael Vogt (mvo), Debian's APT main developer is currently
reviewing the one line fix that solves this issue.

I have a reproducer and was able to identify the root cause and prepare
a fix.

The source of the problem is the following :

string msg = "\nIndex-File: true";
// FIXME: this really should use "IndexTarget::IsOptional()" but that
//seems to be difficult without breaking ABI
if (ShortDesc().find("Translation") != 0)

As outlined in the FIXME, IndexTarget::IsOptional() should be used, and
that is what started to happen with Wily. The code now reads :

   if(Target.IsOptional)
  msg += "\nFail-Ignore: true";

Here is the complete explanation as provided to MVO :

"When the Queue responsible for fetching the Package file runs, it builds the
Custom600 header with the following method :

> // AcqIndex::Custom600Headers - Insert custom request headers
> /*{{{*/
> // -
>
> /* The only header we use is the last-modified header. */
>
> string pkgAcqIndex::Custom600Headers()
>
> {
>
>string Final = _config->FindDir("Dir::State::lists");
>
>Final += URItoFileName(RealURI);
>
>if (_config->FindB("Acquire::GzipIndexes",false))
>
>   Final += ".gz";
>
>
>
>string msg = "\nIndex-File: true";
>
>// FIXME: this really should use "IndexTarget::IsOptional()" but that

>
>struct stat Buf;
>
>if (stat(Final.c_str(),) == 0)
>
>   msg += "\nLast-Modified: " + TimeRFC1123(Buf.st_mtime);
>
>
>
>return msg;
>

The custom header is set with "Fail-Ignore: true" in the case of a Translation
file. This was true until Wily when the code got refactored to use
"IndexTarget::IsOptional" as mentionned in the FIXME.

As far as I can tell, the issue here is that this is wrong :

if (ShortDesc().find("Translation") != 0)

when string::find() does not find the string, it returns string::npos so this
test is always true. This means that when Packages is downloaded, Fail-Ignore:
is also set to true, which means that TryNextMirror() will not retry.

In MirrorMethod::Failed() :

>if (!Queue->FailIgnore && TryNextMirror())
>
>   return;
>

Changing the test in pkgAcqIndex::Custom600Headers() to be :

if (ShortDesc().find("Translation") != string::npos)

Seems to fix the issue quite nicely. From what I can tell, this is the only
place where I found that test on 0. Other places do test with string::npos.
"

As soon as MVO is ok with this, I will SRU the modification and upload
the fix.

Kind regards,

...Louis

ru...@us.ibm.com, could you please test with the latest kernel package
in yakkety-proposed ? The fix for the crc32 issue in the bug cited
earlier is in that package.

The kernel version is 4.8.0-15.16.

2016-09-22 Thread Louis Bouchard
Hello,

I can confirm the issue with makedumpfile on amd64. However, the crc32c
module issue does not appear on amd64 and the module is indeed present
in the smaller initrd created for kdump (present in
/var/lib/kdump/initrd.img-4.8.0-11-generic).

I will investigate the makedumpfile issue with 4.8 kernels.

mterry: ok we do agree then; I did build a test package with that test
in. I just coudln't understand why Debian did not use it.

I'll send a bug to Debian to see if they agree to at least use this
test; maybe we can spare some delta

[Bug 1621835] [NEW] multipathd reconfigure does not update /etc/multipath/wwids file on trusty

2016-09-09 Thread Louis Bouchard
Public bug reported:

[Description of the problem]
[SRU justification]
When running "multipathd reconfigure", which is done when one does a "service
multipath-tools restart", the file /etc/multipath/wwids does not get updated
with the wwid entries. Only the header is found.

[Impact]
The content of the file may contain stale values or remain with only the file
header if the file was removed.

[Fix]
Add a call to remember_wwid(mpp->wwid)

[Test Case]
With an up-to-date Trusty system running multipath-tools-0.4.9-3ubuntu7.13 do
the following :

$ sudo cat /etc/multipath/wwids
# Multipath wwids, Version : 1.0
# NOTE: This file is automatically maintained by multipath and multipathd.
# You should not need to edit this file in normal circumstances.
#
# Valid WWIDs:
/1494554006c756e31/
/1494554006c756e32/
/1494554006c756e30/

$ sudo rm /etc/multipath/wwids
$ sudo service multipath-tools restart
$ sudo cat /etc/multipath/wwids
# Multipath wwids, Version : 1.0
# NOTE: This file is automatically maintained by multipath and multipathd.
# You should not need to edit this file in normal circumstances.
#
# Valid WWIDs:

With the proposed fix, the last command would give :
$ sudo cat /etc/multipath/wwids
# Multipath wwids, Version : 1.0
# NOTE: This file is automatically maintained by multipath and multipathd.
# You should not need to edit this file in normal circumstances.
#
# Valid WWIDs:
/1494554006c756e31/
/1494554006c756e32/
/1494554006c756e30/

[Regression]
Only one call to remember_wwid() is added. This is what is currently done in
0.5.0

[Bug 1535898] Re: Trusty & Vivid multipath-tools (multipathd) seg-fault core dump

2016-09-09 Thread Louis Bouchard
** Description changed:

+ [SRU justification]
+ Without this patch, multipathd may exit in SEGV in trying to add a map that
aleady exists
+
+ [Impact]
+ multipathd crashes with SIGSEGV
+ A typical trace of such a situation is a message similar to this one in
/var/log/syslog :
+
+ multipathd: 360060160164034004cd59cfdb22ce611: failed in domap for
+ addition of new path sdr
+
+ [Fix]
+ Check if the map already exists and do a RELOAD in domap() instead of failing.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Problem was encountered in a complex Openstack test environment where the
following was done :
+ A test tool which runs which :
+ - first boots a number of virtual machines.
+ - then it creates a number of threads and in each thread it
+ creates volumes, takes snapshots of the volumes, and attaches the volumes to
the initially booted virtual machines. After a short while the volumes are
detached, and snapshots and volumes are deleted.
+
+ Running this tool overnight normally result in running in the multipathd
+ SEGV situation.
+
+ [Regression]
+ This is a straight backport of the code being used in 0.5.0. No regression is
to be expected.
+
+ It is important to note that the reproducer in the original description
+ did not lead to such a problem.
+
+ [Original description of the problem]
+
  We have a problem on multipath-tools.

  Usually after a path removal and a re-scan, the multipathd process dies.

  I created 2 hosts:

  iscsi-server
  iscsi-client

  With 4 NICs in between them and with a simple multibus multipath. With
  that I was able to check that there is a regression in multipath-tools.

  It looks like the patches brought from upstream:

  0017-multipath-get-right-sysfs-value-for-checker_timeout.patch
  0018-multipath-handle-offlined-paths.patch
  #

  0036-Remove-all-references-to-hand-craftes-sysfs-code.patch
  #
  # to here
  #
  # 0037-multipath-libudev-cleanup-and-bugfixes.patch

  # 0041-add-wwids-file-cleanup-options.patch
  # 0042-add-find_multipaths-option.patch
  # 0043-alloc-keywords.patch
  # lp1503305_libmultipath_info_on_1st_path_down_dbd131e.patch

  In the range 19-36 caused a regression.

  Whenever I generate the package (for trusty) including those patches I'm
  able to generate a core dump indicating a possible double-free or null-
  dereference related to a path removal (that is why I can reproduce with
  the test case). Unfortunately it usually explodes inside malloc() or
  somewhere in glibc.

  Using valgrind I was able to verify some free() errors:

  ==30415== Invalid free() / delete / delete[] / realloc()
  ==30415==at 0x4C2BDEC: free (vg_replace_malloc.c:473)
  ==30415==by 0x54E243C: vector_del_slot (vector.c:95)
  ==30415==by 0x550A516: _remove_map (structs_vec.c:139)
  ==30415==by 0x550A5C3: _remove_maps (structs_vec.c:170)
  ==30415==by 0x550A64B: remove_maps (structs_vec.c:181)
  ==30415==by 0x40713F: configure (main.c:1153)
  ==30415==by 0x407A74: child (main.c:1419)
  ==30415==by 0x40837D: main (main.c:1618)

  And they are exactly aligned to a core dump (multipathd) I got from
  another user. (wrong free was coming from _remove_map).

[Bug 1529815] Re: InfiniBand DHCP flow with PRA and DHCP relay not working

2016-08-17 Thread Louis Bouchard
Hello,

Looking at the history for this case, the SRU got rejected by pitti
(Comment #29) because of a v-failed on the fix for LP: #1568485 which is
also included in this SRU.

Since then, LP: #1568485 has been verified and is now fix-released.
There is no longer any reason to hold on the trusty SRU for this bug.
The delta between this SRU and trusty-updates is now only the patch that
resolves this issue.

There should no longer be any roadblock for this SRU so I am re-
uploading the 12.6 package. I am also unsubscribing ubuntu-sponsors

[Bug 1570775] Re: makekdump should re-exec with cio_ignore on s390x

2016-07-21 Thread Louis Bouchard
** Description changed:

+ [SRU justification]
+ kernel crash dump fails to work without the modification.
+
+ [Impact]
+ Broken functionality.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Add cio_ignore -k -y output to the kexec command.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Follow indication in comment #2 to reproduce. With the fix, kdump will
function as expected.
+
+ [Regression]
+ A regression situation is outlined in comment #16. Newer channel devices may
not be visible because of the added cio_ignore output. This may be worked
around with a single command.
+
+ The resolution outweights this limitation that can be easily worked
+ around.
+
+ [Original description of the problem]
+
  As per

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/makedumpfile/+bug/1564475/comments/19

  We should re-exec with cio_ignore lines. As per report there, it should
  result in lowered required crashdump setting.

  Hypothetically, one should be able to test this imperially by lowering
  crashdump memory settings until kdump does not succeed anymore. And then
  generated and append `cio_ignore -k -u` to the KDUMP_CMDLINE_APPEND= and
  see that kdump starts working again with a lower memory usage.

  Once this is developed / verified / tested, we should probably SRU this
  back to xenial.

[Bug 1599561] Re: Ubuntu 16.04.01 kdump: IP prefix is missing in the directory name after first dump during kdump over ssh.

2016-07-21 Thread Louis Bouchard
** Changed in: makedumpfile (Ubuntu Xenial)
   Importance: Undecided => High

** Description changed:

+ [SRU justification]
+ HOSTTAG=ip is unusable without this fix on some platforms
+
+ [Impact]
+ HOSTTAG functionality works as expected.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Loop on hostname -I for five seconds. Revert to HOSTTAG=hostname if IP
address not found.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ The race condition is difficult to run into but the bug reporter has been
able to confirm the change from a PPA (see comment #5).
+
+ [Regression]
+ Minimal, as the code path is only enhanced by one loop. Exit path remains the
same.

  ---Problem Description---

  During kdump over ssh IP prefix will be present only in first dump,
  subsequent dumps will not have IP in directory name.

  ---Steps to Reproduce---

  1) apt-get install linux-crashdump
  2) increase crashdump size:
  sudo vim /etc/default/grub.d/kexec-tools.cfg

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="$GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT crashkernel=2G-
  4G:320M,4G-32G:512M,32G-64G:1024M,64G-128G:2048M,128G-:4096M

  3) sudo update-grub ; reboot the machine
  4) sudo sed -i 's/USE_KDUMP=0/USE_KDUMP=1/g' /etc/default/kdump-tools
  5) kdump-config show # should show "ready to dump"
  6) ssh-keygen -t rsa
  7) Edit below parameters in /etc/default/kdump-tools
  SSH="root@"
  SSH_KEY=/root/.ssh/id_rsa
  8)  kdump-config propagate
  9)  kdump-config show
  10) reboot
  11) echo "c" > /proc/sysrq-trigger
  12) verify dump is created in ssh server.
  13) trigger the crash again.

  Canonical,

  The behavior appears to be somewhat intermittent, and it looks as if
  define_stampdir() might be getting called before the network init has
  completed. If delaying this function is not practical, it might be
  helpful to have define_stampdir() fall back to using just "hostname" if
  "hostname -I" doesn't return any useful information for setting
  THIS_HOST.

[Bug 1568952] Re: ISST-LTE:pVM:thymelp2:ubuntu 16.04: change "maxcpus=1" to "nr_cpus=1" in kdump-tools

   Status: New => In Progress

** Changed in: makedumpfile (Ubuntu Xenial)
   Importance: Undecided => Low

** Description changed:

+ [SRU justification]
+ Use a more restrictive kernel boot option to limit CPU numbers to 1
+
+ [Impact]
+ Will significantly lower crashkernel memory usage on some architectures
(namely ppc64el)
+
+ [Fix]
+ Change the maxcpus boot parameter used in the kexec command by nr_cpus.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ kexec-config show will display maxcpus=1 without the change. It will show
nr_cpus=1 with the proposed change.

+ None expected, nr_cpus is a more generic parameter and is more restrictive
than the previous parameter.

  ---Problem Description---
  Because canonical  has fixed bug 137281 ( LP: #1560552 ) in 4.4.0-17-generic,
the kernel now supports "nr_cpus=1". So we should update the "maxcpus=1" to
"nr_cpus=1" in /etc/default/kdump-tools I think.

  Hi Kevin,

  I know nr_cpus=1 is supported on x86 based on this patch

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=14cb6dcf0a023f5977461c94d8d5a163c937979b

  About other architectures, I am not really sure.

  But looking at the kdump-tools source package, it seems like other
architectures
  are using maxcpus=1 to boot kdump kernel unless there is architecture specific
  overrides that are missing in the source. Canonical might be able to answer
better.

  If other aren't using or willing to use nr_cpus=1, we may need a patch
  of this kind:
