Re: Hibernate and Restriced Drivers (Was: 4 More days...)

This bug, or this group of bugs, will be a source of annoyance to many

restricted drivers are enabled by default, this should be considered a
 regression from feisty.

They are?

I hope this doesn't sound ungrateful. Ubuntu developers are doing a very
good job overall, and dealing with binary blobs isn't an easy task. It's
alright to know that something is broken right now, but it's worrying to
have the impression that no solution is in the offing at all. I'd love
to see some sort of Hibernation team created that tries to tackle the
 problem in a systematic way.

I've tried. We can't. The lack of source means we have absolutely no
idea what these drivers do over suspend/resume, and there's no way to
figure out what we should be doing in response. The long-term solution
involves moving modesetting and video initialisation into the kernel,
but I strongly suspect that that will end up breaking the binary drivers
for a significant period of time until they adjust. I don't see any way
we can make this work properly within the next 18 months.

With the exception of the Thunderbird and timidity issues (and I can't
reproduce the timidity one here at all), every bug you've responded to
in gutsy appears to be down to your issue with Hal. And, judging by the
log there, your system was entirely broken:

03:13:09.373 [W] ids.c:294: Couldn't stat pci.ids file
'/usr/share/misc/pci.ids', errno=13: Permission denied
03:13:09.373 [W] ids.c:515: Couldn't stat usb.ids file

03:13:09.373 [E] osspec.c:310: Unable to inotify_add_watch() for
'/usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe': Permission denied

indicates either filesystem corruption or that something has heavily
screwed with the permissions. It certainly doesn't look anything like a
hal bug. What are you actually complaining about?

Mobile-media

2007-10-08 Thread Matthew Garrett
I chatted to Bob about this briefly on Friday, but thought I'd mail the
list to make sure that I don't end up doing anything unexpected.

I've been looking into uploading gstreamer-dbus-media-service and
mobile-player. I've got everything working and building happily, but
there's a few changes I'd like to make:

1) Rename org.gnome.MobileMediaService to org.moblin.MobileMediaService
- using Gnome's namespace for an interface that isn't part of Gnome
doesn't sound like the best plan to me.

2) Adapt mobile-player to use directories in ~ rather than /usr/share
for user information. Right now it wants to write files to /usr/share,
which isn't going to work now that we're not running as root. Either it
needs to be able to deal with the concept of merging multiple data
sources (one read-only and another read-write) or we can just move
everything into the user home directory. The downside of the simple
approach is that it makes it harder to provide example data. I'm not
much of a Python person, so I'm not so keen on implementing the more
difficult side of things. If that can get worked out, it would be great.

3) Possibly rename mobile-player to moblin-player or moblin-media? This
would be more consistent with the naming of the other packages.

Other than that, I don't see any showstoppers. As long as there's
agreement on these, I'll get it into gutsy this week.

[Bug 96692] Re: ata_piix used instead of AHCI for Mac Pro

2007-10-04 Thread Matthew Garrett
The firmware programs the sata controller into piix mode, not ahci mode.
On this specific hardware, the ahci driver is able to reprogram it -
however, that isn't guaranteed in general, and attempts to do so have
led to unfortunate behaviour like missing CD drives. Right now, the
easiest thing to do would be to convince Apple to program the device
into AHCI mode.

[Bug 130794] Re: Tracker needs to throttle indexing on battery

2007-10-01 Thread Matthew Garrett
Ok, in that case pausing indexing on battery isn't working for me. I can
create files on battery and they appear in tracker-search instantly.

There's no need for a preference here. The desired behaviour is that
tracker not crawl filesystems when on battery. Indexing newly created or
modified files is fine - the file is either in cache or the disk is
already spun up, and the instantaneous CPU load is small. There should
never be a situation where creating a new file does not immediately add
it to the index.

[Bug 146699] Re: Support for CD-ROM-eject button, Fn-F9

2007-09-29 Thread Matthew Garrett
As I said, it's a request to stop using the resources on the dock. In
Linux you'd want it to unmount the hard drive (if you have one in the
base, rather than a CD drive), perform a PCI hotplug on any inserted PCI
card (only relevant for the R, T and Z series docks), cleanly unmount
any USB or Firewire devices connected and finally call the EJ0 method on
the dock device.

The X-series dock contains an Ultrabay slim. Lenovo still sell hard
drives for that.

2007-09-29 Thread Matthew Garrett
I've checked this - Lenovo document it as being for dock management.
It's a software request for the platform to stop using any resources in
the dock (such as unmounting filesystems if you have a hard drive in the
bay) so that the laptop can be ejected safely. The media eject icon is
commonly used on docking stations. The Dell and HP docking stations I
have to hand both use it in this way.

[Bug 57146] Re: [prism2.5] doesn't associate for network-manager with hostap_cs

and n-m never sees the association. I suspect that this is due to the
event coming from wifi0 rather than wlan2. I'll take a quick look at
this, but right now I lean towards blaming the kernel.

[Bug 125832] Re: [gutsy] orinoco_cs.ko missing

2007-09-25 Thread Matthew Garrett
hostap_cs failing to work with network-manager is bug 57146, and we have
code to fix that. If anyone has a card that fulfils all the following
criteria:

1) Is detected by hostap_cs, and has an interface created
2) Doesn't work with manual configuration (ifconfig, iwconfig and dhclient - we
already know that network-manager is broken)
3) Works fine with orinoco_cs and manual configuration

then please attach the output of

pccardctl info

and explain the problems you see.
